I will be at a conference in St. John's 12-16 July. Any musical ideas or recommendations?

Walk down George Street till you hear something that sounds cool (or get thirsty...)
Another place I sing about but have never been.

Speaking of irrelevant threadjacking, Edmond, we're playing at Royal Oak on the Canal for their Lobsterfest June 11, 7-11, so you and the good Charmion are invited to drop by for a scoff...

Bill
Sorry....

We will probably be blowing through Lunenburg sometime in August, for a short stay with friends. Let me know of you want to meet us at the airport with a bad and a limo...   :D

Willie O struck the nail on the head. You may even hear Ron Hynes as you walk by one of the pubs on George Street.

w-o ... "Walk down George Street till you hear something that sounds cool"

Yup. George street... the most pubs per foot in the world (so they say).

Great music of all types, great people. You will surely do well Wed and Thurs night, especially if you are into Celtic. I sang and played pop cans with my tipper many a time... they'll let anyone make a fool of themselves.

Just stay away from The Cotton Club and The Eager Beaver.

AND... make sure you get to Ches's for some fish and chips AND get the pizza with tomatoes from Pizza experts (I kid you not. I have eaten pizza from Boston to Montreal and beyond... none so good... some shockin good me zon, me zon.)

I definitely intend to stroll down George Street. This won't be my first trip to St. John's. It's one of my favourite cities.

Thanks for tips on the local cuisine. Pizza and fish and chips are two basic food groups for me.

Bill: I have marked your gig on the calendar.

Oh... chat up someone local about where and when to go for some lobster if it's in season (been years since I was on The Granite Planet).

We used to go to wharves and bring a bottle (pronunced "bah'l"; a fourty pounder of black rum). Most fishermen have a cooker on the boat and a bottle and a C will get you a feast for four... and I mean a feast. I am talkin enough crawlers to make you not pleasant company for two days, on accounta lobster farts are truly disgusting, especially if you drink that vile black rum. >;-)

Of course, your sched may not allow, but it is so much fun. Ya get to talk to some of the guys that made this country what it is... the salt of the earth... tough as nails... and every one of them a treasure in story, song or joke.

I miss getting over to The Rock.

Get out to Quiddy Viddy if possible for a look-see. I was lucky one day as a boat was coming in through that little hole in the rocky shore. From where I was standing, it looked perilous! Never ate at the restaurant there as I was told it was pricey... but now?

Of course, there are lots of other spots to see. Ask who the best taxi tour is and go for it.

And get a feed of cod tongues (and cheeks, but I doubt the cheeks). And look fer a Jig's Dinner with Peas Puddin and some Figgy Duff. Some shockin good.

I am trying to remember the name of a spot on the road one would take to go to the airport. A huge old house turned into a restaurant with local musios playing mostly Celtic trad and new stuff along those lines.

Alas, I can't even remember using Google Earth as a guide. Matter of fact, it might be past the airport on the road to Portugal Cove.

And just a few blocks from Auntie Crae's is the most wonderful record store ever, can't remember the name, Joe's or something like that. The proprietor is a muso and you can't go wrong if you buy anything (or everything) from his "personally recommended" display.

I think I've been to Auntie Crae's on a previous trip. I have a feeling I will have to be listening to a bunch of lawyers give a presentation on Tuesday after lunch, but I will see.

There's a Folk Club night at the Ship (Wednesday I think). If you sign up to do four songs you get two beers. It's a pretty noisy crowd because most of the people at the back are talking while the music is going, but I still enjoyed myself.

Just had a wonderful walk down Memory Lane on google Earth... The Cotton Club is now in the Conerstone House at Queen and George! I kinda think it's a shame for a strip club to (IMO) tarnish the neighbourhood.

I saw a lot of familiar places. I used to like Kellys Pub. We'd spend a time there and then head across the street to the Sundance and have a go onstage on Wednesday night. Seems to me that was where I first saw Doherty & Evans... wonderful tunes. There was a lass there who would put on a pot of tea for me and serve me a wee munch if she wasn't too busy, which was rather odd for 10PM. I usually made it my last stop of the eve. Gorgeous redhead with blue eyes. Typical Newfie hospitality. She never wanted any $ but I always left it on the bar.

I got here yesterday and watched the World Cup at a pub on George Street (can't remember the name - might have been Kelly's). I saw the Sundance, but somehow it didn't look like a music place. Does anybody know if it still is?

No doubt about the Newfoundland hospitality. It took about three seconds standing on the corner with my map trying to figure out where I was before somebody materialized and asked if I needed help.
