Sorry folks. It wasn't my intention to poach anyone. This one's only running on third Mondays with a gaggle of locals it seems. I do have a seperate thread for Seven Stars. If you're all ok now, I'll get me coat. Bye.
Good luck... Sue

Just realised that was ambiguous.

Should have said ...the landlady, and Jenny, who runs the sessions.

DT
13 August: Somehow we've acquired two threads, and I've been updating the other one which should now be not far below this one, as I updated about thirty minutes ago.

Don't worry Kev.

I don't think we'll clash too much.

I'm seeing more the locals from Sevenoaks, Otford, Tonbridge, and Borough Green, than the Sarf Lunnon crowd.

Nonetheless, there's a warm welcome wherever you come from, and we're in it for the long haul. This is now a commitment for Poetry Bird and ME, as we very much like the pub, the landlady, Jenny, who runs it, and all those we've met there.

So THIRD MONDAY OF EACH MONTH, FROM NOW ON!.

Don T.

Too right RB - that was a HUGE Tread poach!

We are trying to get THIS ONE running!

No problem if there is another potential one, but PLEASE just start a new thread!!

I personally think that that is "Bad Form" Sue! I was trying to help you get back to a receptive venue in this part of the world, and you then use the thread to push something that you have sorted out that conflicts!

I thought that we were all suposed to be on the same side?!

I'm really keen to get down from Suffolk to one of these sessions, but I've just seen that I'm magistrating all day for the next two, and then on holiday for September and October. Please try to keep going until November!

Just got home after a really great evening.

Eighteen people there for the whole evening, nine of whom were performers,....... talented performers.

NINE WHOLE AUDIENTS, and very appreciative too. I took Poetry Bird, who made a beeline for the comfy sofa, and, with her bad back rendered bearable, proceeded to wow the assembly with the best poetry performance to date.

Next one is MONDAY 19th JULY, and we will be open on MONDAY 16th AUGUST, when Jenny is unfortunately not able to attend, and has asked me to stand in.

So, when most of the clubs are closed for the month, and you want a folk fix, come and join us.

Most who come once keep coming back.

Don T.

Do not trust Google maps to get you there or back. It's got a mere byway marked as a road, and the pub as a private house on the wrong side of the road.

Nice one folks. Glad to see that there is some potential interest despite the obvious problems and down sides!

The work that I have to do tonight is going very well, helped by a large gin and tonic!

Hope it goes well tonight!

Hey, I'm chilled...just pointing out the vast number of possibilities on a Monday within a 20 minute drive of my house! It's so hard to choose....I hate to think what it must have been like in the "golden era" of the 60s when there were apparently far more clubs and sessions than there are now...but maybe this corner of Kent/Sussex is unusually well-served in the present day?

It sounds great, and I will try and get along sometime soon...but it doesn't sound that different to the ones I already go to. The last Monday session I went to I got to sing/ play 6 tunes, and that was missing out a "round" due to nerves. One was unaccompaned "semi-trad" folk (ie written in the last 30 years but in a trad style), one was "proper" trad and the others were recent instrumentals ("Ashokan Farewell" being recent) and an acoustic version of a rock song.

Still, the Beacon Monday sessions close down for the summer, so I'll have a spare Monday or two in July/August, and I will come along then. I can't really pass up the Beacon when it does run, as it's within walking distance of my house, even carrying a guitar and an octave mando! In fact, it's almost within walking distance carrying a piano :-)

Thanks Don. This session sounds just like what we had going, first at Knatts Valley, then at Wilmington. Our sessions failed... and the same people who are going to Kemsing went there. Rob, you'll be fine.
Good to see the discussion happeniong at last. I love Mark's posting... but what's the fun of drinking alone at suppertime?... and there is no way this leopard's going to sleep in a ditch ... we climb trees!

Chill guys. This one is a bit different than the norm.

It's a small, intimate session, with some regular local attenders, whee you get to sing rather more songs than usual.

It's vey informal, with no constraints on what you sing.

Kind of refreshing.

GF: Apart from Tonbridge (which only has singarounds now and then), the other Monday events I go to are closer to sessions than to folk clubs.

I certainly don't consider myself a "folkie". I've only recently got up the nerve to perform at some of these sessions, but over 50% of what I do is by no stretch of the imagination "folk". I'm learning more folk stuff now, purely because I've become interested in it., but it's not the mainstay of my repertoire.

drink Coke ? No Way !!!!!!
The only way to get around it is to space out the Quality Quafing Ales with lime juice and soda, or lemonade . . . Also, to have a few empty plastic bottles ready for the Fine Ale, Stout and Porter take-aways to drink-at-home-for-supper and a handy flask of tea and biscuits stashed away in your car/motorbike/bicycle ...

Failing that, I'm sure there are plenty of comfy ditches in rural Kent, with the added aroma of wild hopbines to ease you off into a slumbersome and fitfull sleep ..

Rob. You I know, are not alone. All these clubs are good, but there are only so many folkies out there. Where are the people who just want to play in sessions ?

I'd love to come, but Bob Kenward's on at Tonbridge as a "resident guest". I usually only hear him do 2-3 songs during a singaround, normally not his own, either, so can't pass up a rare opportunity to see him have most of an evening to himself.

I'm particularly looking forward to his new "winkle" song...he originally had the French for "winkle" in there as "vaaankel" and was a little nonplussed when I told him it was "bigorneau" (courtesy of holidays in Brittany eating Fruits de Mer). He says he's managed to work it into the song to sound OK now, so I can't pass up the opportunity to hear it.

There's just too much going on locally for me to get everywhere within range that I want to go....and that's just sticking to West Kent, without considering everything in east Sussex. I'll try and get over there soon as a change from Tonbridge, The Beacon or High Brooms Open Mic (they're all on a Monday) but not this time, unfortunately :-(

I actually think that the recommendation is a very good idea. Ithink that it should even be lower still! I speak as one of "the stupid drink drivers" who was caught, unlike the many who are not caught. I have still managed to get from a to b using public transport AND taxis AND with dessignated drivers! If the majority of the public left there cars at home and clubbed together for a taxi, they could then have sensible ammount to drink, have a good time and the Landlord would actually do MORE business and be MORE likely to survive!

I shall not be there on Monday night as I will be Morris dancing on Tuesday and Thursday this week and need to do some work from home on the two nights that I am in.

Hope it all goes well.

Regards

Kev

Beg your pardon Guest- so let's hope that the reccomendation doesn't eventually become law. It has a nasty habit of happening like that.
We got the discussion going, any more thoughts?

It's been announced this morning that the permitted level of alcohol is to fall to almost half the current amount.

No it hasn't. It's a recommendation made in a report. A very different thing

Well, it's been announced this morning that the permitted level of alcohol is to fall to almost half the current amount. Rural Folk Clubs and sessions won't survive this unless us folkies change our habits. Already pubs are suffering from lack of alcohol sales, and many have gone to the wall. If we can be persuaded to change our drinking habits, the clubs might survive. As it stands, everyone suffers because of the few stupid drink drivers.

I understand that this club needs more support. It is suffering the same problems as did The Fox And Hounds. The pub, and the beer, were excellent, but the location was such that it was only accesable by motor vehicle. I have looked up The Rising Sun, as did RafflesBear, and it is beyond Knatts Valley. I can see the problem.

Pub wants to sell beer... Folkies want to drink beer

Drink and drive laws restrict consumption of beer

Petrol is overly expensive.... and could increase in June Budget

Beer is overly expensive...... and could increase in June budget

The Foresters was accesable... but lacked good beer and atmosphere.

Maybe there's too mauch else on on Mondays.

It seems a no win situation- unless we put playing good music with good friends before drinking alcohol. The pub can make as much money by pedalling Coke. Dicuss!

I'll be there this time.

Either in new transport or with Ken.
I've told a few others about it too, so who knows?

It's a great session in a pub tht knows it's a pub, with a choice of real ales.

Not to be missed.

Hi there.

The Rising Sun is actually at Cotman's Ash which is a small little hamlet above Kemsing (which is near to Otford).

I think that there have been four sessions there now.

The beer is good, it isn't busy on a Monday night and there is plenty of room for performers to just have a sing and a play.

I've not been able to get to them, but Jenny (who's idea it was to try and run them there) says that a great night is had by all.

I know it is a Monday and I know that many of you go to other clubs etc, but do give it a try. It's always the same time of the month (the third Monday).

Thanks in advance for your support.

Kev
