Hi,

Crossing Over Jordan is a metaphor but is it an song?

The Folk Index has: Crossing Over Jordon (spelling?)

James and Martha. Anthology of Country Music, Vol 18. Early Gospel Greats, ACM ACM 18, LP (197?), trk# B.01 [1946-50]

There are several refernces online to a spiritual titled Crossing Over Jordan. Is there one?

Any lyrics?

Richie

Probably is one, since there are ...going over Jordan and ...cross over into as titles of lyrics posted here. A popular theme. I'll look around.
There is one in McIlhenny called "Cross-er Me Over," but I don't have it.

Q,

This is the only song I could find last night, I assume it's the same one or similar to the one you referred.

CROSS ME OVER- The Negro and His Songs: A Study of Typical Negro Songs in the South By Howard W. Odum, Guy B. Johnson 1925

Yonder comes er sister all dressed in black,
She look lak er hipercrit jes' got back,
I'm bound ter cross Jord'n in dat mornin'.

CHORUS: Cross me over,
Great Jehover,
My Lord, I'm bound ter cross Jord'n in dat mornin'.

See dat Christian on his knees,
He's gwin'tercross dem jasper seas,
I'm bound ter cross Jord'n in dat mornin'.

Swing low chariot in er line,
Carry me to glory in due time,
I'm bound ter cross Jord'n in dat mornin'.

Ain't but one thing grieve my mind,
Sister, goin' to heaven an' leave me behin',
I'm bound ter cross Jord'n in dat mornin'.

Dost Thy soul ransomed from Egypt,
Yet in the wilderness stay?
Canaan's fair land is before thee,
Cross over Jordan today.
Refrain:
Look, oh, my brother,
Canaan, the land of the blest,
Lies now before thee;
Haste to the place of thy rest.
Spend not thy life thus forever
Treading the wilderness way;
Enter the fullness of favor,
Cross over Jordan today.
Life will be pleasanter, sweeter,
Stony no longer the way;
Many the foes left behind thee—
Cross over Jordan today.
Why dost thou shrink from the crossing?
Thinkest thou still of delay?
Waiting will not make thee stronger,
Cross over Jordan today.
Thou art abundantly able,
Falter not now by the way;
Grace all-abounding is waiting,
Cross over Jordan today.

I presume it is the hymn attributed to Charles W. Naylor. Not a spiritual.
