Subject: Lyr Req: might be medieaval
From: GUEST,Brynneth

It's one of those half remembered songs, it might have come via John Renbourn, it might be mediaeval, it might be something else entirely. I've got the tune, and some of the words, if anyone recognises it and can point me in the right direction to find the rest, or can fill in the gaps, that would be much appreciated.

My sweet and fair lady
Never believe of me
That I have bent my knee
To anyone but you.

(less sure about this bit...)
And with no thought of cheating
(and then a big gap)

(It ends with something like....)
Alas out of charity/sympathy
Grant some relief to me
Come death and set me free
I've suffered so for you.

Probably a translation of Guillaume de Machaut's "Douce dame jolie".

Machaut's tune is in the modes tutorial on my website:

http://www.campin.me.uk/Music/Modes/

in the section on heptatonic modes.

It is indeed my translation of Guillaume de Machaut's "Douce Dame Jolie", which was on the Enchanted Garden album by the John Renbourn Group. The singer on that song was John Molyneux.
The lyrics will be on the vinyl album inner sheet, if you can track that down. I'll have a look later to find my own copy, if I have time.

Anne

Subject: Lyr Add: DOUCE DAME JOLIE (In English)
From: GUEST,Hektor

Lyrics to DOUCE DAME JOLIE (English version):

My sweet and fair lady
Never believe of me
That I have bent my knee
To anyone but you.

For with no thought of cheating, sweet thing
I have so humbly binded
Though it's ready for your will and still
With no evil thought in mind,

Alas, out of charity
Graften some relief to me
For no joy can there be
With no mercy from you.

My sweet and fair lady
Never believe of me
That I have bent my knee
To anyone but you.

You hold my heart so tightly, knightly
So close on your command
Binded so fast with chains of agony
But it wishes for more harm.

And words shall still to be
In such captivity
For your lack of pity
May always continue.

My sweet and fair lady
Never believe of me
That I have bent my knee
To anyone but you.

And as this illness never never
Can be taken from my heart
Except by you, my sweet cruel jewel
Who loves to see me smart.

And here on my bended knee
Captor, now you see
Come death and set me free
I've suffered so for you.

Hope this helped, I figured it out by listening to this version on YouTube:

I only wrote it down the way I heard it so it may be wrong on some places. Anyway, hope it helped =)

This guy sings it like he means it:

Theo Bleckmann

Nearly everybody sings this song far too fast. READ THE WORDS. Renbourn sounds like he's bored to tears with it and wants to get it over with. A truly loathsome performance.
