Hey folks. I need to find a computer with a 5 1/4" floppy drive. Ideally it will still run and have a copy of Wordstar on it. This is not as uncommon as it might seem. Many corporations in the mid to late nineties were using Wordstar.

I could use it fast. I will drive as many as 12 hours and pick it up Sunday if anyone has one. That's how bad I need this.

I know this sounds weird, but this is a life defining moment for me.

Help.

Excluding the miracle that would be the above:

If anyone has an old 5 1/4" drive, internal and external, and would be willing to FedEx it to me ASAP, please call me. 814-205-FOLK

Max

have you tried e-bay? or craigslist?

these folks have discs (and a toll free number...maybe they can help)
http://www.oldsoftware.com/floppy_disks.html

this place says it has 5.25 floppy drive (but i suspect only 3.5)
http://www.bhphotovideo.com

these folks have a service that copies data.. http://www.copymyfloppy.com/

you might also contact this place: http://www.floppydisk.com/index.html

also here: http://www.tigerdirect.com/

after you say "floppy" a few times it sounds silly!

goodluck...Laurel

Gee, I wonder how many of those drives I've thrown out. I looked and looked, but all I can find is a couple of 3-1/2 inch drives.
It appears that all versions of Windows will operate with a 5-1/4 inch drive, if your BIOS will accept it.
Not counting the Commodore 64 my dad gave me, I bought my first computer in 1988, and it had a 3-1/2 inch 720k floppy drive, no hard drive. The computer I had at work at the time, had two 5-1/4 inch floppy drives, with no hard drive. I think it had DOS 2.0, with those big binders of instructions that made it look really classy.

Good luck, Max.

Max...I have a Win 3.1 machine that has a 5 1/4 drive, but I am in the midst of getting our festival going. I am just north of Wash DC.

(The machine works fine, except for the mouse...if you want to come here and take out the floppy drive, be my guest..I will be at the festival all day Sunday, but 'arrangements' can be made.

Max...also... member 'beardedbruce' has the world's largest collection of antique computers,(at least it feels like it when we move him) and 'might' have access to such an animal....but he will likely be at the same festival as I this weekend. He lives only 30 minutes from me. I will ask him tomorrow if you don't come up with anything else.

If somebody doesn't come up with one for you, I'll go look and see what's there tomorrow or the next.

My Rog says to check at a Habitat for Humanity store near you; they always seem to have such things lying about. I was going to suggest craigslist but it looks as though most of the stuff on there is too new. Good luck!

I don't think the 1.2 M drives lasted very long. Why use 1.2 M floppies when there are smaller ones that hold 1.44 MB?

OK, doesn't look like I'll be able to come down Sunday, forgot I have 4 hours of radio to program today and I'm presenting at a nerd conference on Monday. (I gotta get rid of some hobbies... and maybe my children) ;)

Bruce, enjoy the fest. Touch base when you get settled and we'll see if we can manage to mail them next week.

Thanks folks, still need everything urgently, but seem to be jammed up. Be in touch. Oh, and I'm pretty sure I found the Wordstar that I need, so all I really need now is to get a 5 1/4 drive working on a modern machine.

Please mail anything you got to:

Max Spiegel

Bellefonte, PA 16823

I'll mail you reimbursement.

Thanks,

Max

Looks like you found Wordstar, but if not, WordPerfect was great at converting from other formats and might be easier to find.

Max, if you can email me the file I can open it on WordPerfect X4 and send it back to you in any format you like, including .doc and .txt. I don't have a 5.25 drive though I do have a 3.25 inch one.

Wordstar not only fit on a 5 1/4" floppy, it fit on the original version of the 5 1/4" floppy - 92K, with 2K reserved for the operating system (CP/M), later called single sided, single density. Wordstar and Supercalc came with the Osborne computers. I kept using several versions of Wordstar on a couple of newer computers, but got rid of the discs after I no longer had a computer that could read 5 1/4s. Dick and I were introduced because we both had Osborne computers...

Thanks Repaire, but the files are on 5 1/4" disks, of which we have about 1000 of. Research project I'm trying to get on here at Penn State. A famous dead author's journal. 8000 pages of hand written notes and 1000 5 1/4" floppies. I have no business on the project, but hoping my nerdness and my access to you old(school) nerds gets me in the game.

Word Perfect, which is still alive and kicking, just released version X5 (15, except to marketing types). It will open and save (!) in Wordstar. Max, you could probably get it at an "education price" via the University Bookstore or some local computer shop.

For my money it's still the best around -- and by that I mean the whole Wordperfect Office suite: Quattro Pro, Presentations, and all. For sending stuff to the unenlightened you can send it in Xcel, Power Point, or Word formats.

Max, can you keep us posted on the progress of this project? I'd like to know if you can get a 5-1/4" floppy drive to run under recent versions of Windows; and whether Rapaire's suggestion will work, to use the current version of Wordperfect to open an old Wordstar file.

Many, many people used Wordstar for quite a long period of time, so your success in this project may help a lot of people.

I'm sure you can get an OEM copy of Word Perfect for very little money on eBay. Dell and others give it away with new computers. I have a couple of copies of it, but since I installed and registered these, I don't know if you want to fool with installing it there also.

Max...I still have one more day at the festival, and cannot possibly even look at the old Win 3.1 machine until Monday. PM me if you still need
A)the machine
or
B)just the drive from it

I'll 'commune' with Bruce tomorrow and work out a plan with alternatives.

(I have not actually used this drive for several years, but it worked the last time I tried.)

I recently disposed of a 12 drawer cabinet purchased for storing my 5.25 inch floppies. It was advertised to contain 100 floppies per drawer.

I had kept it long enough to discover that it was a "close enough" size for storing my 400+ document backup CDs. In slim jewel boxes it would have held about 800 CDs, but I decided to junk the drawers when I found that about half of the CDs were unreadable after the oldest reached about 10 years. (And I did learn that some - but not all - shredders can eat old CDs; but you do have to take them out of the boxes.)

I don't recall having "data fade" problems with 5.25" floppies, but most of what I had on them got transferred to 3.5" floppies to save space before the 5.25s got more than a very few years old. A few hundred 3.5" flopppies gave only about 40% back after storage in quite good conditions - in the dark, with reasonably controlled temp and humidity - for around 15 years. I didn't really see the need to "work the problem" for the failed 3.5" floppies, since most of what I needed was on more than one disk; so I don't know whether fairly simple data recovery methods might have raised the odds on getting more out of them.

I was a bit surprised at the rather poor data survival for the 3.5" floppies and for the CDs, so I'm now hoping that dual backups on a pair of good hard drives may be more successful. I've generally found that data files on hard drives are good as long as the drive runs, so making a "second second original" from the last surviving drive should make me good until the next drive failure - and keeping two up at a time should make me good for as long as I'll need any of my stuff.

John

5 1/4 floppies ... sniveling youngsters, now in MY early days I can remember 8 inchers....

I can also remember the difference between the 'hard hole sectors' and the single hole 'virtual sectors' floppies.... :-) they are not swappable....

as for getting the old HW to work on modern OSes, both 5 & 3 inchers should work on all MBs that have the 'floppy bus' HW plug as the Boot roms on all MBs (X86 compatible style PC) still recognise the drives, as they are part of the standard. They should work even on all versions of Linux, as they are part of the basic machine.

Max, just wondered if you are feverishly planning to go back in time to save the planet?

Some of the communications on this posting have got my imagination working overtime.

It could be a really good opening sequence for a sort of 'Flash Forward' or 'Lost' kind of TV programme and could really grip the global imagination.

If you fail to find this particular old software and the means to use it the whole of human history could be changed forever.

Read on for the next installment. This could be more than life defining!

Chris

Big Grin. If it helps to "Save the World" in some future or past flash, I think I could contribute a never-been-opened box of 5 1/4 floppies. Who knows what riches we would be able to find if we look around a bit? Not to mention what precious information we might find on the 40% or so of our old outdated storage media that still works.

John's already disposed of 12 drawer cabinet doesn't seem to have a use in the big picture, not if it wasn't able to keep vital information safe from the ravages of time.

Maybe we'd better call Chuck in on the case . . . no on second thought, let's make that Sarah. (end of fanciful side track, let's get back to solving Max's problem; sounds like the minions have the case well in hand.)
