I'm initiating this issue in anticipation of certain disturbances to music & song seshes, folk clubs etc during the next several weeks.

The licensee of our weakly sinaround in Chester has forewarned there may be some modifications as to how our sesh can operate during these bleak times & has constructively suggested we change our night temporarily from Wednesdays, when the BIG DEBACLES will be on.

Any other organisers facing similar?

The sessions at the Plough in Henfield (West Sussex) normally run on the 2nd Sunday of the month. However, with the blasted footie on the pub widescreen TV, the June session has been put forward from the 13th to the 6th, and the July session has been put back from the 11th to the 18th.

We shall overcome...

Told to me by my friendly builder this morning: "New government legislation has decreed that all men with a penis the size of an AA battery must display a white flag with a red cross on their car..."

Well I was speaking with Bill Whaley last night and here is one event that has sold one hell of a lot of tickets already and it's on Saturday June 12th when England play USA.

Saturday June 12th 2010    Bill Whaley & Dave Fletcher (40 years singing together), Martyn Wyndham-Read & Iris Bishop & Trio Threlfall

The concert starts at 7.30pm Doors open 6:30pm and Tickets are £7.50 To reserve tickets call Dave on 01205 290562 or e-mail dave@whaleyfletcher.co.uk or Colin on 01205 723884 or e-mail hayec@hotmail.co.uk

There is a bar.

Swineshead Village Hall, North End, Swineshead, Boston Lincolnshire PE20 3NA

Seems well over 100 tickets sold so far. So its not all doom and gloom :-)

Somebody posted a great website (on another forum) for when particular matches are on. Its really clever.

Well I am stocking-up on Motorbike/Highbrow quiz game/science documentary programmes on my PVRs. I have made a yellow flag with 46 on it to wind-up the red and white flag flying brigade. And I will be at ceilidhs anyway.

Oh and repairing Miss Yellow's motorcaravan. Probably frost damage but it looks to be an old corroded fracture that finally gave way. Bad design certainly. The designer should have been concentrating on the mechanical stresses not the football game.

I've checked up. In Scotland it's illegal for men with penises larger than an AAA battery to display symbols consisting of a red cross on a white background.

...........hmnnnnnnn, further pondering of this issue leads me to some interesting conclusions.

In the pub where our weakly sesh is held, from time to time, there's footy on the BIG TELLY in the other room.

Mostly, the sesh people can't hear the telly, but when a goal or other event occurs, cheering & applause floats over from the other side.

Sometimes, this coincides with a folky just completing his or her contribution & then seems entirely appropriate & I'll comment something like 'Oh, they liked that one!' [tune or song]

At other times the cheers occur during a song, then I'll shout over 'Not yet!!'

If only there were a way of synchronising the barroom footy fans' shouts to happen between our musics!!

It's not so much the simple England flags that really piss me off,as the ones with " ENGLAND" written on them !! I mean the French don't have "France" across their beloved tricoleur ; I am not aware of any "Stars & Stripes" bearing the legend " America" , or "USA", and even a little country like Wales is confident enough about its national symbolism to refrain from adding "Wales" or "Cymru" to its dragon,or wyvern,or whatever it is ! Perhaps it should be " AA -battery size" for the plain English cross, and "AAA-battery size" for the other abortions !!

With a bit of luck England will be knocked out in the early stages and we can get back to normal. Hopefully Argentina will win!!

I'm sure that the shaven headed oiks driving around in cars with a St George's flag fixed to the front windows, are really closet morris dancers - they want to dance Jocket to the Fair - with St George's flag handkerchiefs!!!

Incredible as it may seem, there are some of us who like folk music and footy, and would have to make a choice if a session clashed with a big game.

As I think it may now be too late to contact Fifa to ask them to rearrange the schedule for the tournament, changing the date of a session would seem to be the only option to allow people to enjoy both -and you avoid losing people who might have wanted to follow their team.

Maybe we should come up with some World Cup songs:
"There was Stevie, Fabio,
Rio wasn't there-o,
Rooney he never looked behind him ..."

Bainbo,

Nice one,son!

Like it - think amelioration always better than animosity/ confrontation.

Perhaps we ought to be finding other ways've accommodation, co-operation, inclusivity of our diverse leisure pursuits?

Suggestions?

FOOTBALL (by a singer called Zander Nyrond)
(Slightly fardled about by Nigel)
(Tune: the obligatory "Greensleeves" cover)

Alas, my mate, someone squealed on me
And now they're saying it's piracy
I taped some stuff from the BBC
'Cause I couldn't watch any more football.

(CHORUS)        Football is on every day,
Football's just about all they show,
        Football is a ghastly plague,
I just cannot stand any more football.

In former times before I knew you
I watched Blake and Star Trek and Dr.Who
But now those programmes are all but through
There'll be nothing to look at but football.

(CHORUS)        Football is on every day,
Football's just about all they show,
        Football is a ghastly plague,
I just cannot stand any more football.

I turned the box on and swore like hell
As they replayed Greece against Israel
On ITV, Sky and the Beeb as well
Was exactly the same game of football.

(CHORUS)        Football is on every day,
Football's just about all they show,
        Football is a ghastly plague,
I just cannot stand any more football.

Now I've been caught I'll be put away
And I'll bet I know what the judge will say
For sixteen hours out of every day
I'll be tied down and made to watch football.

(CHORUS)        Football is on every day,
Football's just about all they show,
        Football is a ghastly plague,
I just cannot stand any more football.
