"Great singing club" - The Wilson Family.

club singers and musicians
The clubs activities can be split into 3 categories: Guest Nights, Singarounds and Musician Workshops / Sessions. Singarounds and guest nights start at 8.30pm. Singarounds are the very essence of what the club is about and are on the 2nd Monday of each month throughout the year (check the website for the January date if the 2nd Monday is Plough Monday). There is no formal entry charge, but a voluntary contribution of just £1 to help us offset our running costs would be most welcome. Guest night charges vary.

Traditional English Music Workshops/Sessions
The club organises regular traditional English music workshops and sessions at the Soar Bridge Inn (see below for the dates). The workshops, which have a strong morris influence, take place in the Grand Union club room at the back of the pub and run from 7.30pm until 9.00pm. They regularly attract an ensemble of melodeons, English / Anglo concertinas, accordions, fiddles, guitars, whistles and recorders. The music is taken at a steady pace and they are open to anyone who has mastered the rudiments of their instrument and who has an interest in English Folk music. There is no formal entry charge but a voluntary contribution of just £1 to help us offset our running costs would be most welcome.

The sessions take place in the bar and run from 9.00pm until the landlord kicks us out. They are usually fronted by Martin Wildig and Phil Preen (subject to the commitments of the Bang On The Wall Ceilidh Band). The music has a bias towards the English traditional but apart from that the format is reasonably free. The sessions are open to any musician who enjoys playing traditional music, there is no entrance fee and the pub keeps a good cellar with real ales always available. So what are you waiting for? Come and join us.
Forthcoming Workshop and session dates:

    * 28th June 2010
    * 19th July 2010
    * No session in August 2010
    * 27th September 2010
    * 18th October 2010
    * 15th November 2010
    * No session in December 2010

The Grand Union Folk Club has at its core a group of well established singers and musicians who are drawn together by a common passion - the love of a good session. Even allowing for the occasional absentee, there are enough of us to guarantee that, if you enjoy tradition style acoustic folk music, you will have a great evening out. Members of the core are: Stuart Booth, Pete Burnham, Lyn Cooper, Bob Crosby, Tony Jalland, Karen Harris, Jacky Lockley, Phil Preen, Martin Tabraham, Steve Tunnicliff, Martin Wildig, Bill Wilkes.

Dick, many thanks for posting the Lewes Saturday Folk Club list - that's very generous of you.

We look forward to welcoming you to the club this Saturday. So far we know that there will be six concertinas of various systems present, including the dreaded Spare Parts Concertina Band.

I hope you like chocolate ice, because I'm planning to make some as a pudding for supper on Saturday. There will be fresh fruit as well.

Valmai

By the way, we don't expect the football to be a nuisance this Saturday night. The Elephant has several wide screens downstairs, but the sound insulation is good and it's unlikely to cause problems in the upstairs clubroom. We might need sharpened elbows to get to the bar but I reduce this problem by buying four-pint jugs of Harveys Best, sparing myself the fatigue of toddling downstairs more than twice a night.

I had a very enjoyable time at all three folk clubs,the standard of floor singing was good in all clubs.
I sold 8 CDS, and felt that it was a worthwhile trip.
I thought Karen Harris,who did a support for me at Barrow On Soar was very good.

I just received this email, from one of the Barrow On Soar[GrandUnion Folk club organisers.
Hi Dick

My apologies for not sending this sooner, time seems to have flown by over the last few weeks. I just wanted to say thank you for a great night at the Grand Union and to say I hoped the rest of your tour went well.

She is a superb singer - and a nice person. About whom the word is spreading - solo and with the rather wonderful GU4 - without the need for continual spamming and obsessive self-advertisement. But the real talents have never needed that... Have they?

"I thought Karen Harris,who did a support for me at Barrow On Soar was very good."
if anyone takes umbrage at that,I am sorry but I can only laugh.

I apologise for calling Barrow upon Soar, Barrow on Soar, it is very pleasant folk club held in a pub by the canal ,the pub is an Everards pub, which serves real ale.
I believe there is a connection between Everards the brewers, and Everards who contributed tobuilding the canal and who were also involved in the canal trade.,see Ellis and Everard barges.
