From many years ago camping I vaguely remember a ballad about a hound dog named Blue - one line was something like "Are you walking these hills tonight Blue?" Does anyone know the song - and where I might find it?

Blue

Chorus:

Blue walkin', Blue walkin',
Are you walkin these hills tonight Blue

Raggedy ears and a dragon's tail
A heart that's faithful and true
Are you walkin' these hills tonight Blue?

Master I hear you callin'
My heart goes out to you
But still I hear you callin', Blue.

The story behind the song: This song was about a dog who disappeared at a camp after his best freind the camp owner had suddenly died. The story goes that Blue wanders the hills of the camp looking for his master. The camp staff sing the song because at night you can hear Blue howl.

Blue Walkin

(It is an eerie camp song - about an old man calling for his dog.)

Chorus:
E    A         E    A               B7                           E
Blue Walkin'. Blue Walkin'. Are you walking these hills tonight, Blue?

Floppy ears and a draggin' tail, a heart's that faithful and true.
Are you walking these hills tonight, Blue?

Through these woods we used to roam, huntin' was all we'd do.
Are you walking these hills tonight, Blue?

Then one day you went away, I wish that I knew why.
Are you walking these hills tonight, Blue?

Master I hear you callin'. Callin' me back to you.
Are you walking these hills tonight, Blue?

Blue Walkin'
Chorus:
Blue walkin', Blue walkin'
Are you walkin' these trails tonight Blue.

Floppy ears and a dragin tail, a heart that's faithful and true.
Are you walkin' these trails tonight Blue?
(Chorus)
Master I hear you callin', My heart goes out to you.
But still I hear you callin' Blue.
(Chorus)
Up and down these rollin hills, Blue's in search for you.
And still his heart goes out to you.
(Chorus)
Eat nor sleep he has not now, but still he continues on.
He'll march until he dies for you.
(Chorus)
Blue's search is over now, he's finally home to you.
So love that Blue 'cause he loves you.
(Chorus)

Blue was a Camp Ranger's. The song was written by Camp counselors after observing Blue after the death of the Ranger. It is a true story. I knew one of the Counselors that was involved in writing the song.

Ella Jenkins did a rendition of this song on the children's album "Seasons for Singing."

It is a bit shorter than some of the versions posted here, which is why I was looking it up in the first place. It is such a lovely little song that I hoped I could find a few more verses. I was very pleased to find a few here.
Hope this helps some one else :-)

Thanks for the link, Guest. that's a nice song.

Why is a dog called Blue? Probably because it's a blue tick hound. These dogs tree their prey and then howl. Here's a video of a pup who has spotted, if not actually treed, a prey animal.

Clearly the prey animal just wishes it would shut up.

I remember a teacher of mine Mrs. Williams, play a four string guitar and sang Blue Walkin to us in either the 5th or 7th grade in Fraser, Michigan around 1970 or so.

I have always really enjoyed this song, but, everywhere I look, it has a different variation, is there anyone who could possibly give me the correct version?
