Well I can play CD's but it wont recognize a blank CD

I am assuming the drive is a cd burner? Have you tried other blank cds? I have gotten bad ones before....also how old are these blank cds? They are do degrade over time.

Brand new CDs worked once then keeps saying insert blank CD.

Have you tried updating the cd drive's driver?

Did you make any changes since the last time it worked? Also what is the model of the drive? Is this a notebook or a desktop?

Not made any changes. It is a Compaq desktop SR1611NX. The drive is the originally installed one that has been working fine for years.

It made one CD fine then keeps telling me to insert a blank disk.

I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to you in a few days. Is it working yet? If not, sometimes this issue can be caused by a dirty lens, so if you clean it with air or a soft cloth or something, that can work.

However, the the lasers in the burner can burn out over time. If that's the case, unfortunately a new one would be in order.

I've come across this problem before... sometimes it's the drive (as amergin suggests), but sometime uninstalling the drive, restarting the PC and letting the OS reinstall it works.

Only a month or so ago I'd been asked to sort a Sony Vaio where it would play CDs, but wouldn't recognise DVDs... it's fine now. Must have been a corrupt registry key.

There was a spate of problems with this sort of thing caused by installation of certain CD burning software, Roxio in particular.
