Subject: RE: Singers club in the leeds area From: migginz Date: 01 May 22 - 07:39 AM This list might be helpful although I would try and check before you try and visit since I can spot at least one venue change although it is clear if you check the link in that case FiloFolk - Guide to Folk Music in and around the Ridings |

Subject: RE: Singers club in the leeds area From: Steve Gardham Date: 29 Apr 22 - 03:28 PM Hi Rob A folk club is a pre-arranged regular event often weekly but can be fortnightly or monthly. They often alternate between a paid guest with supporting house/floor singers, and what is called a club night where the floor singers have a spot each and usually a visiting performer will be welcomed with a spot. A singaround is similar to a club night but each performer usually gets one song at a time and the order of programme revolves around the room, with an MC in charge of encouraging performers. A session, usually means a musicians' session and the lead is taken more or less at random with all joining in. Some are more suitable for learners and others for seasoned performers who know all of the standard session tunes. Most sessions allow for a newcomer to start a set of tunes. All of these usually take place in pubs, sometimes in the bar, sometimes a private room. |
Subject: RE: Singers club in the leeds area From: GUEST,Rob Date: 28 Apr 22 - 06:41 PM Hi all, Sorry if it is strange to start this thread up a dozen years later... ...but I will be visiting the Leeds area around June 24 (2022), and I was also curious if folks know of any singarounds or folk clubs in the area I might be able to join in on. I see a "Folk Club" listed on the Grove's webpage on Fridays, for instance. Does that mean a singaround, or is it more of an open mike kind of thing? I'm from the US, so I'm not completely sure about the terminology. Thanks! |
Subject: RE: Singers club in the leeds area From: GUEST,Wayne Date: 06 Jun 10 - 01:09 PM Here are a few singarounds that are on this week: Monday 7 June: The Owl, Rodley, Leeds from 9pmTuesday 8 June: The Abbey, Newlay nr Bramley, Leeds from 8:30pm These are not folk clubs per se with a wide variety of music (including folk!)performed but they are friendly and welcoming. Both pubs serve excellent ale,and have decent parking for the unfortunate driver. Wednesday 9 June: The Packhorse, off Briggate, Leeds from 8:30pm This is a fairly new venture set up by Ed & Carol from the Grove. The pub is in the centre of Leeds, in an alley just off Briggate. A prominent sign shows the way. It's a folkier event than the above, and equally friendly, with typically eight or ten singers. Word of warning: the bar staff don't always realize anything's going on upstairs! Thursday 10 June: Topic folk club, Bradford. Not sure what's on this week but they have regular singers' nights. Google them to double check. Friday 11 June: Folk @ the Grove, Back Row, Water Lane, Leeds from 8:30pm This is a terrific (mostly) traditional singers' night in another fine real ale pub. Again, a warm welcome is assured. Hope this helps Wayne |
Subject: RE: Singers club in the leeds area From: The Doctor Date: 06 Jun 10 - 01:00 PM If you're anywhere near Ilkley on Monday there's a session of singers and musicians at The Swan in Addingham, just a couple of miles further west, and there are other singarounds around, some of which have been noted/advertised on Mudcat, and there's also The Topic at Bradford on Thursday. |

Subject: RE: Singers club in the leeds area From: GUEST,Gail Date: 06 Jun 10 - 11:25 AM Hi Will, the Grove pub has a long history of supporting folk music (and indeed musicians). It's a real ale pub about 5 mins walk from the city centre railway station. I don't live in Leeds now but I know the pub's still going strong. The Grove music pub, Leeds |
