Subject: Rehearsing for Getaway
From: Rapparee
Date: 06 Jun 10 - 08:45 PM

My wife has said that I'm going to Getaway, so I guess I am. Because the Primary Elections are over here in Idaho, there was no one around to cut my grass in a hopeful exchange for my vote and so I had to cut the stuff this afternoon. While doing so I got to thinking that I'd better start practicing for Getaway. So here's a song I think I'll sing and I'll post some more as I think of them.

The Ballad of Billy the Kid

Oh, I'd sing you a story of Billy the Kid
Of the men that he killed and the deeds that he did.
I'd sing you the story all over the place
Except I don't know it, now get outa my face.

and then I thought of this one:

Henry Plummer was a daicent man and he came from daicent people
In Bannack Town he built a church and on it put a steeple.
His gang they robbed the Blackrock stage, they really was a daisy,
So the Stranglers strung ol' Henry up and they did it nice and aisy.

So you can see that I'm getting ready even now. How are you all doing?

Idiot's question, Rap: What is Getaway (from one who is totally ignorant of such things)?

His bread it was corn-dodger
ANd his meat I could not chaw.
An' he drove me half-distracted
With the wagging of his jaw.
An' the telling of his stories!
Wal, I'm here to let you know,
There never was a rounder, boys,
Who could lie
Like Diamond Joe

I'm refreshing this old chestnut, dedicated to one of Spaw's nautical ancestors:

THE BLOW AT WITCH'S HOLE

As we set out one evening, upon the Northern Sea,
We was headed out a-fishing, for to earn our daily fee;
Headed out to fish, me lads, and set our course so bold,
When our ship was (when our ship was),
When our ship was (when our ship was),
Overwhelmed and dragged down the Witch's Hole!

Our charts were fully up-to-date, so thought our Captain Brock,
Avoiding every hazard, and every shoal and rock,
Yes, every shoal and rock, me lads, upon the Northern Sea;
And we cours-ed (and we cours-ed),
And we cours-ed (and we cours-ed,
To the Witch's Hole that lay a-thwart our lee.

No wave it was swept o'er us, no squid nor octopus,
No giant whirlpool sucked us down, we had no time to fuss;
There was no time to fuss, me lads, as we sank beneath the waves,
But we all stood (yes, we all stood),
But we all stood (yes, we all stood),
Resolutely, so valiant and so brave.

A silent threat but deadly, that methane from the Hole,
Rising from the gassy depths, amidst the dark and cold,
Amidst the dark and cold, me lads, like some monster from the deep;
It dragged us (yes, it dragged us),
It dragged us (yes, it dragged us),
To the Witch's Hole, forever there to sleep.

"It's suffocate or evacuate!" we heard our captain cry,
As he pulled out a handkerchief, to wipe his tearing eyes;
As he pulled out a handkerchief and held it to his nose,
"We will never (no, we'll never),
"We will never (no, we'll never),
Rise again from our odorous repose."

This was no bathtub bubble or some silly fish's farce,
But a blast of great proportion from the earth's own mighty arse,
From the earth's own mighty arse, me lads, the methane did arise;
The water density plummeted, (yes, the density plummeted!).
The water density plummeted, (yes, the density plummeted!).
And thus proved our demise.

I was the sole survivor, me messmates drowned that day,
The Coast Guard came a-racing up, and snatched me from the wave,
They snatched me from the wave, me lads, and saved me sorry skin,
And I surely (yes, I surely),
And I surely (yes, I surely),
Would have drowned if I hadn't broken wind!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Rap ~ the way I heard it, it was Sanit Patrick who was a daycent man who came from daycent people. Hadn't heard about Henry Plummer.

Amos ~ I see that you like one of MY favorite songs, and wonder whether you use the same tune/melody as I do, or something different. (I understand that there are several "variants" of Diamond Joe" which are really completely different songs.) The version I play/sing was learned from Tom Rush's eponymous Vanguard album, where in the liner notes Tom says he learned it from Cisco Houston.

Well, Pop, maybe that's because in the true folk tradition I stole the tune.

I like Art Thieme's "Diamond Jo."

Will,

The Folklore Society of Greater Washington (FSGW,) as one of it's activities, has a weekend retreat in October. The core activity is singing. The next most essential activity is talking. For many, sleep is a distraction on this weekend.

They have been holding for almost 40 years. You need not be a member of FSWG to attend.

A large number of posters on the Mudcat are FSGW members. Another bunch have become regular attendees at this annual event.

It is often the highlight of my musical year.

So is this thread about what you're / we're working up to do at the Getaway this fall?

Good God! Who thinks that far ahead? I can barely remember what I want to sing when it's my turn next in a sing-around. If the question were "What would you sing / get ready to sing if the Getaway were this weekend, I'd probably mention my latest composition, "Son of Davy," which I did with Sidekicks at the Washington Folk Festival on Saturday. I need to keep doing it for two reasons -- one, so people will get to hear it and maybe like it, and two, so I can remember it in its finished form. Songwriting means not only writing, but editing, and performing means remembering the final version, ignoring all the alternate lines and phrases which crop up from your memory, so singing it a lot helps "set" it.

As for songs mentioned above, I sing a combined "Diamond Joe" version, with the Tom Rush verses melded to the "come and get me" chorus that comes from a song about a steamship line. We (Sidekicks) started doing it that way so's we'd have a nice trio chorus to sing. Now it's sort of set that way in my mind.

I wrote a short chorus to "Sandy Sam & Rusty Jiggs" (from Tom Paxton's take on "Tying a knot in the Devil's Tail") for the same reason. When you work in a group with a harmony singer like George Stephens, you look for opportunities to add choruses, even if none was there.

Hmmm... this has the makings of a workshop -- "Improvements(?) to Folksongs" -- at the Getaway. Worth a thought, anyway.

Bob

My Song

My rifle's rusty, my sword is bent
My cloak is a great big stain
And my good old horse got so fed up
That upped and moved to Spain.

CH: So lift your glasses friends with mine
And buy cheap booze for me
I'm money's foe, I'm poverty's friend
I'm the retired Rapaire
I'm the retired Rapaire!

Well, Linda, I have DC-area connections....

My wife was born in DC and grew up in Silver Spring. Her family still lives around there; her father, maternal grandfather, aunt, great-uncle, and others of her family are buried in Arlington. Others are in Mt. Olivet. Her family goes back a long, long way in that part of the world, back to before the Revolution. I married into that sort of thing.

Fortunato - I don't need to *rehearse* those things. I do 'em regularly! 8-)

But, having cleared my last science-fiction convention of the summer, I have moved on to dusting off all the things I usually do at Getaway and trying to add a few new things.

Most notable is probably "Building Up and Tearing Old England Down", which I have in mind for a particular workshop.
