Help: Trad Irish or Hawaiian music for funeral

Please can anyone help me find songs/music recording suitable for playing at a funeral I am arranging for my elderly father who passed away last week. I am his only daughter. Where/how to download legally and details of recording I can pass onto funeral director. I am more than willing to pay performing rights etc but need to give details to funeral director in next 2 to 3 days if poss. I would have posted this a few days ago but was busy organising barn dance for friend's birthday etc etc.

My 93 year old father passed away last week. He liked TRADITIONAL IRISH folk songs - John McCormack (please excuse spelling errors), Bridie Gallagher, Mary O'Hara, and also TRADITIONAL Hawaiian music - eg. Sol Hoopii.
Unfortunately his CDs were cleared out of his house when he moved into a nursing home about 3 years ago. I have a few of his tapes (copies of his LPs/CDs he made for listening in car years ago)but not commercial ones. I found one Mary O'Hara CD but must have been old "remastered" one from old recording - could not make out the words.

You don't say whether you're in the UK or USA

If in the UK you might find that your local library will have suitable CDs in their collection, so that you could borrow them for a few days.

I'm sure other 'catters will be along soon with more suggestions

The funeral home probably has access to a vast amount of music, probably through computerized sources of some kind. Ask them.

Was your father a Christian? Most hymnals have an index in the back called 'Tunes and sources of hymns." Look there for 'Irish,' and it will give the names of tunes in the book that came from Ireland.

Who Will Sing for Me is used often here in the Ozark Mountains. Here is a youtube performance by Emmylou Harris. She introduces the song as Angel Band but it is in fact Who Will Sing for Me.

I have THIS ALBUM and the music is very beautiful, traditional Hawaiian slack key guitar tunes. Not sure if that is what you are looking for, but I see you can buy it in mp3 format which you could then put on CD, as far as I know.

There's also an mp3 download available of a Sal Hoopii CD.

If you search Amazon mp3 downloads, I'll bet you can find others, too.

When my grandmother died a couple of months ago, the funeral director told us that both the church and the crematorium had huge collections of MP3s and CDs and had the UK licences allowing them to broadcast the music at funerals etc. I suspect this is now common practice.

All we had to do was choose from their lists, which included some Fureys songs she had liked.

You may wish to consider a song called "The Place I am Bound". It was recorded by the Kips Bay Ceilli Band on their CD "Digging In". A short excerpt may be heard at Amazon. Looks like it may be downloaded there for 99 cents (American.)

You may decide that it is not what you are looking for, but I find it to be a very hopeful, upbeat song.

Thank you very much everyone for your suggestions. It's now 11.35 pm here in UK so will look at this tomorrow. Apparently the crematorium will only accept an original CD so yes, as suggested in first post from "Willa", the simplest solution would be to borrow one from the library! Why did I not think of that in the first place?! I think my brain has been in the wrong gear these last few days.

What would the PRS do about it if the music requested was only available as a download?

(I've come across that "original CD only" policy from crematoriums before - I was not impressed back then, and that was before downloads had really taken off).

If you have a friend who can sing, I suggest "Aignish on the Machair" from the Songs of the Hebrides collection by Marjorie Kennedy-Fraser. My aunt has put me on notice that I have to keep enough voice to sing it at her funeral, whenever that may be.

The main reason why crematoriums ask for 'originals only' is because CDroms are notoriously unreliable. You'd be surprised how often someone makes a compilation that hasn't been finalised - which prevents its use on anything other than the computer which burned it.

Some CD players are designed not to play CDroms, though they are becoming quite rare. For example, the CD module for an Inter-M PAM series amplifier would only play 'commercial' CDs, though ones we've sent away to be serviced now come back with that restriction lifted.

For PRS and MCPS purposes it does not actually matter whether a CD is an original or not as long as you submit the correct logging details when the track is played in public (not to be confused with copyright infringement by unauthorised duplication).

This also applies for radio broadcasts - it's the audio that matters, not the storage medium. In the old days, radio stations needed stacks of vinyl, but these days most tracks are stored on a computer retrieval system. At Oldham Community Radio we use P-Squared's 'Myriad' system, which automatically prepares the returns for PRS.

You may find that an employee of a crematorium may use PRS as an excuse because it's simpler that way. The company I work for maintains the sound systems for crematoriums run by Salford City Council (UK), so I do understand their frustration!
