Subject: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: Alice Date: 11 Jun 10 - 10:49 PM I just read a movie review and watched the preview (New York Times) for a movie being released now called "Winter's Bone". There is a video trailer here: Winter's Bone movie preview It sounds like the music in the movie is worth a listen. A taste of the music is at the beginning of the preview. "The topography of chilly hollows and ragged forests is filmed in a way that emphasizes its bleakness. There are banjos and fiddles, as well as guitars, and some beautiful old mountain ballads are performed on camera. Some of the cast members are nonprofessional actors, and nearly all are wary, watchful and taciturn, speaking their few words in faultless regional accents." NYT review here click Alice |

Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: Arkie Date: 12 Jun 10 - 07:45 PM This is one movie I would like to see. I have been intending to find a copy of the book and just have not got around to it. Daniel Woodrell who lives in the southeast corner of Missouri has written several novels set in the Ozarks. I did not recognize but four names among the musicians but two were from the general area where Woodrell lives and the other, Billy Ward, I have seen and introduced at a few fiddle contests in Mountain View, Arkansas over the years. Van Colbert is a distinctive banjo player and Marideth Sisco, I know through a mutual friend. I was told that she had an interest in the music of May Kennedy McCord who was a fixture in the early days of interest in Ozark folklore and the source for "Palace Grand" which was picked up by Joan Baez and others. Van Colbert usually performs at the festival held annually in West Plains, Missouri in June. Dirt Road Delight is Billy Ward's band. There will, at least, be some southeast Missouri flavor to the music in the film. That area is quite rich in the Ozark mountain music traditions. |

Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: katlaughing Date: 13 Jun 10 - 05:43 AM Looks good. That harmonica player has got some of the sexy moves I've ever seen as mouth harp players go! I do not mean that in a sexist way, just that I appreciate an artist who gets into their music in such a physical way like a classical violin soloist I saw who stretched onto her tip toes when playing Beethoven's Violin Concert in D major. I love the lead singer's voice. I'll want to see this just for the music and, I hope, as someone else said, it is better than what they did with Cold Mountain. Thanks for the links. |

Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 20 Jun 10 - 07:36 PM This movie received an excellent review in the Kansas City Star. It is unusual in many ways. The main character is a girl of 17 whose father is a meth dealer. He had put up their humble home as security on bail, and now he's skipped. The girl is left with the responsibility of keeping her family sheltered and together. It is not a Disneyfied fantasy about country life. |
Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: GUEST,booklynrose Date: 20 Jun 10 - 11:10 PM The video clip looks pretty grim. |
Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 21 Jun 10 - 08:58 AM Yep. It is grim. http://www.nometh.org/ About a year ago, the KC Star had an article about a conference held in kansas for country sheriffs. The subject was how to deal with the young children found in meth labs. One thing they were taught to look for was little children with burned lungs. By the way, 'Ecstasy' is just meth with an upscale name. |
Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: Arkie Date: 21 Jun 10 - 08:00 PM Woodrell, the novelist, has a reputation for portraying the dark side of Ozark culture which today is more heavily into drugs instead of moonshine. There is also some fear among Ozark folk that when films and novels such as this become popular folk outside the region will assume that they represent the norm for Ozark culture rather than the exception. |

Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: GUEST,heather Date: 27 Jun 10 - 10:42 PM I really hope this movie and book doesn't give people the idea that the Ozarks are full of backwards hillbillies. I'm originally from the part of the Ozarks were this is set (Christian County MO), and I still have family there. Yes, there are hillbillies, and yes, they are strange people, but most people in the Ozarks are nice, hard working, and honest people (and most aren't hillbillies). My family that still lives doesn't do meth, and I don't know any one there who does. By the way, I live in Atlanta, GA and there are tons of people here on meth. Drugs are cooked, manufactured, and used anywhere there are people. The only people I know in the Ozarks who do "drugs" are the old rodeo cowboys/bull riders who are using prescription pain killers since they are in such incredible pain from all the years of rodoeing. They're not junkies, they are just trying to get through their days with out dying from pain. Please go visit the Ozarks. They are beautiful and majestic! Some great people have come from this area - George Washington Carver and Langston Hughes. Laura Ingalls Wilder chose to move there with her family, and you can visit her home (great for kids who love her books). Brad Pitt, Kathleen Turner, and Dennis Weaver are great actors from the Ozarks. The Ozarks are a great treasure, and they are filled with good people. |
Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: GUEST,damselfly Date: 02 Jul 10 - 04:50 PM I've read the book and seen the movie. I don't usually like such bleak subjects, but the book is very engaging and the movie's well done. |
Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 03 Jul 10 - 08:54 AM Good. I'm glad you liked it. What was the music like? (I don't watch movies. They make me seasick.) |
Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: Ruth Archer Date: 03 Jul 10 - 09:19 AM "By the way, 'Ecstasy' is just meth with an upscale name." No it isn't. They are different (related) drugs which have quite different effects. I thought Tim Eriksen's bits of the Cold Mountain soundtrack were really good. I hope Winter's Bone comes to the UK as well. |
Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: open mike Date: 03 Jul 10 - 11:32 AM I have enjoyed the music from movies that Tim Ericksen and T-Bone Burnett have worked on. timeriksenmusic.com http://www.tboneburnett.com/ and i look forward to seeing Winter's Bones, thanks for posting, Alice. |
Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: open mike Date: 03 Jul 10 - 11:33 AM those two drugs are in a similar chemical family, but have markedly different effects. MDMA (3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine), an entactogenic drug, also known as "Ecstasy", and as "E", "X", and "XTC an entactogenic drug of the phenethylamine and amphetamine families. MDMA has a tendency to induce euphoria, a sense of intimacy with others, and diminished anxiety and depression. Many, particularly in the fields of psychology and cognitive therapy, have suggested MDMA might have therapeutic benefits and facilitate therapy sessions in certain individuals. Clinical trials are now testing the therapeutic potential of MDMA for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety associated with terminal cancer. Methamphetamine, or crystal meth is a is a highly addictive central nervous system stimulant that can be injected, snorted, smoked, or ingested orally. Meth affects the central nervous system and can cause insomnia, paranoia and convulsions. Methamphetamine users and addicts may lose their teeth abnormally quickly. It is also known as speed or crank. |
Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: LeTenebreux Date: 03 Jul 10 - 05:02 PM I heard a review of this film on Fresh Air with Terry Gross, it sounds really great! The interview (with the writer of the book and the film director, a "two-fer"!) led with a bit of the music, and that's how it got my attention. It comes to our local art-house theater on 7/23, *sigh* |
Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: MAG Date: 12 Jul 10 - 12:21 AM I didn't think it has enough music in it to go just for the music. Music does play a role. Yes, it is incredibly grim and incredibly good. |
Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: GUEST,booklynrose Date: 12 Jul 10 - 12:39 AM This movie was recommended by my friend who comes from the Missouri Ozarks. She said that although lifestyles range, Winter's Bone is an accurate portrayal of one sector of the population. My friend thought I would like the music, so I am glad to get your judgements. |
Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: toadfrog Date: 18 Jul 10 - 02:36 PM It is, yes, grim and also very good. It isn't like the Ozarks I lived in, but then it's about 150 miles away, down by the Arkansas border. The music is different in kind from Cold Mountain, which has an original score. These are songs people still play and listen to. It is good, but not an important enough part of the film to warrant seeing it just for the tunes. |
Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 19 Jul 10 - 09:48 AM I just happened to see a recent New Yorker magazine, and in it 'Winter's Bone' received an excellent review. The music wasn't mentioned at all, so as others have said here, it is a minor feature. |
Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: Arkie Date: 19 Jul 10 - 11:14 AM Still have yet to see the film but I suspect that this is not a film based around music as was "Oh Brother". It is like many other films that use music create atmosphere or create a mood or possibly add an element of authenticity. From what I know of the musicians and what I have read the film crew has made good use of regional musicians rather than import big names that might look impressive in ads and on the markee. |

Merideth Sisco was a music consultant for the movie. her blog: http://maridethsisco.com/2010/10/26/things-are-moving-quick/ Here is a clip of Merideth and her band..(not from the movie) sound is sketchy on this, but here she sings a June Carter song (cowboy murder ballad spoof Big Yellow Peaches) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oKIQr65G3o&feature=related thank you Arkie for the background info.. you said Merideth studied music from this archivist: now I am curious about May Kennedy McCord She was a folklorist, author, columnist, speaker, ballad singer and radio personality. http://www.projecttaney.org/50083/mccord.html She was called the Queen of the Hillbillies and the First Lady of the Ozarks. She deserves her own thread, actually! McCord had many talents. She was a writer of the famous "Hillbilly Heartbeats" column which eventually became the name of her own radio show on the Ozarks own KWTO radio station. McCord also was a musician who played the guitar and sang folk songs. |

Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: LadyJean Date: 28 Oct 10 - 02:31 AM It sounds like a good movie, but I wish the motion picture industry, and novelists would portray working people as something other than grotesques. I live in a very blue collar neighborhood. I see what hopping from job to job does to people. My next door neighbor's grandson was shot by the police last year, allegedly because he combined alcohol and Prozac and became violent. Possibly because the local police are a bunch of thugs. The message movies like this give some people is, why do anything for these people, since they're a bunch of deranged druggies. |
Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: Mark Clark Date: 29 Oct 10 - 12:10 AM Actually, LadyJean, that isn't the message this movie gives people at all. It doesn't portray the people of Missouri this way or even the people of the Ozarks or even the people in the counties where this is set. It's just a story, a hopeful story, dealing with the lives of some of the people there. I have a brother living and working in the Mountain Grove, West Plains area who actually knows some of the people. He's director of a regional CAP Agency. And my own S.O. has lived among the people where the film was actually shot. She also knows people who appear in the movie. Arkie met her when we were in Mountain Grove in 2008. I haven't read the book but the film presents an accurate view of certain rural folks in the area. It's also, in my opinion, a deeply moving film and very well shot, directed and acted. We drove 120 miles to see the film as it wasn't going to play in our area. Well worth the trip. - Mark |
Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 29 Oct 10 - 09:27 AM Thanks, Mark. The film critic of the Kansas City Star newspaper wrote a column yesterday that said this is the best movie of the year. He has watched it 'half a dozen times' in the last week. |
Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: Lonesome EJ Date: 31 Oct 10 - 11:58 PM Excellent, gritty movie. And by the way, I liked Cold Mountain and thought the music was well done. It strikes me we should rejoice when a producer decides to put something as compelling and traditional as "I Wish my Baby was Born" into a mainstream movie, instead of quibbling about its authenticity. |

Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: GUEST, Paul Slade Date: 02 Apr 13 - 10:05 AM I can't speak for the US DVD, but the UK one has a couple of excellent documentaries about the area where Winters Bone was filmed and the real people living there. Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: Dave Hanson Date: 02 Apr 13 - 02:57 PM The thing about this film that stands out for me is how nasty and vicious these people are to each other. Are the Ozark people really like that ? Dave H |
Subject: RE: Winter's Bone movie set in Ozarks, music From: GUEST,Arkie Date: 02 Apr 13 - 05:43 PM Having lived in the Ozarks for over forty years now, I will say that the film is realistic to a point. It does not depict all of the people who live in the Ozarks, or even the majority of folk in the Ozarks. For the most part, the people who live in the Ozarks are much like those one would find in any community. But in some instances there are people much like the worse of those depicted in the novel and the film. The film also portrayed some strong qualities and determination that is to be found in people who have endured extreme poverty and even neglect. |
