Just heard this news.
He was a cheerful country boy.

Also played a great villain in Diamonds Are Forever.

He will, no doubt, live on through his sausage.

"Big Bad John" was one of the all-time great singles.

Used to send shivers down my spine.

RIP

"Big Bad John" also contained two of what must by any standards be reckoned as the greatest couplets of all time:

..."Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip,
And everybody knew you didn't give no lip
To big John" ...

also

"...And a crashing blow from that big right hand
Sent a Louisiana feller to the promised land"...

Stirring stuff.

I remember seeing him with "Jimmy Dean and his Texas Wildcats" (or maybe it was "Jimmy Dean and the Texas Wildcats"), possibly on a Washington DC local show. I also well remember seeing him on his National TV show with Rolf - it's one of the reasons why Rolf was always one of my favorite Muppets.

RIP, Mr. Dean.

Danged, the "Sausage King" is gone... Sniff...

True Story: A few years back the P-Vine almost bought a house south of Richmond, Va. and had we gotten it Jimmy Dean would have been a neighbor...

2nd True Story: About 10 years ago the Commonwealth of Virginia held a state wide song writers competition for a new song that would be the official state song and Jimmy and his wife wrote one and didn't even make the finals??? He was steamed and I guess some poor shmo who was doing the judging was too young to remember just who Jimmy Dean was 'er ol' Jimmy would have certainly, at the very least, made the finals...

3rd Trus Story: I loved his music and wished he'd satyed at it rather than becomin' the "Sausage King"

Sniff...

If I remember right, the "Small Sad Sam" parody was done by Phil McLean.

Bobert, if Jimmy had stayed with music, he'd have been forgotten by now. He knew that country music was changing and he got out and found something else to do that could make him the same money that country music wouldn't be able to do anymore.

And I like his sausage. I've got a box of micro-wave sausage biscuits in my freezer. I'll break them out for breakfast tomorrow morning. Rest in Peace.

Others have mentioned the "Small Sad Sam" parody. As I recall, there was also a sequel to Big John (which apparently is properly called "Big Bad John", but will always be "Big John" to me.) It was sung by a woman, as I recall, and told how a woman - presumably the "Cajun Queen" of the original song - went down into the mine, found John, and revived him (presumably with a kiss.)

Jimmy Dean was one of the last of the "crossover" country entertainers who was as popular in his day with general audiences as with Opry fans. Others who come to mind are Tennessee Ernie Ford and
Eddie Arnold. Early television made good use of them and all became household names. Sausage came later. RIP

I still have 3 or 4 of his old 45's. I'm suprised that "PT 109" hasn't been mentioned yet. It does make one wonder why he didn't work up an act and play Branson Missouri every once in a while.

Nah, RangerS... I think he woulda gone on the road as an opening act for Ralph Stanley... And woulda done fine but...

...Jimmy??? He was a homeboy and just didn't have it in him... I mean, that's okay... I fully unnerstand that thinkin'... Got the same problem, ahhhh, situation myownself...

Reckon not too many folks know him as the "Sausage King"... Heck, must be a regional thing... I like his turkey sausage... Good stuff... No poke meat...

I enjoyed Jimmy's songs and his show from Washington brought Elton Britt and Billy Grammer among others into our family living room, and we did not get many big time musicians and singers in Sedley, Virginia.

He was a smooth singer and always enjoyable but but his recitations were a little different and really got my attention. Among favorites are the Darktown Poker Club and Please Pass the Biscuits.

I also appreciated what he did for sausage because he did up the quality of what was available at the time. My wife decided sausage was not good for us and I have missed it. I need to get a package of premium pork mild country sausage to celebrate Jimmy's life.

Rowlf the Dog was a regular on his program. And you'll recognize the Frank Oz and Jim Henson touches. Dean was very sharp in choosing this character for his program.

Another of those figures that you just assume will always be here. Talented himself, his variety show in the mid 60's was excellent, Not surprisingly the most fan mail came for he and Rowlf.

And if you don't remember, before Kermit or Bert and Ernie or Miss Piggy, there was Rowlf.....Jim Henson's first "star quality" muppet and a star he was on Jimmy's show. The interchanges between the two of them were classic.

Thanks for the songs Jimmy but thanks for the sharing which you did so well.

I remember how surprised my mother and I were in 1961 when, after buying the 45 of "Big Bad John," we discovered that the lyric was not the laundered one we'd heard on the radio -- "At the bottom of this mine lies a big, big man" -- but the more direct, "At the bottom of this mine lies one hell of a man!"

I love the sausage! I don't get the biscuit and sausage combinations (I live in Texas but I wasn't born in The South), I stick with regular and sausage packages. It goes in the freezer, then I slice off as much as I need and it thaws then cooks in the skillet.

He was so smart to set up that side business, and in something he knew.

dang... another part of my youth bites the dust! My family watched his show every week & loved it. There was an easy going charm with good tunes and humor... way better than most of the crud that passes for TV entertainment these days.

RIP
