Always enjoyed their music, from an early electric incarnation at Albion Day in 1990 to whenever. It's typical of certain people in the UK to envy excellence and success.

re: Post the lyrics to Mudcat (replying to Indrani Ananda).

I hope Indrani will indeed post her Oxfam prizewinning lyrics to Mudcat. In the meantime, the song SPECTRAL PARADISE I sang at Hove Folk Club recently is on our folk club pages on Myspace.com/fyviesfolk (could be first song at the moment).

Some other of Indrani's songs are there too.

Didn't really get it the first time I saw them about 5-6 years ago, but gave them another chance 2 years ago at Sidmouth, where, of course, they have a huge fan base, and really enjoyed that concert. One of the few English bands that make regularish trips to Scotland, including Celtic Connections, and, next month, they'll be at Stonehaven FF, and I'll see them again in Sidmouth a few weeks after.
Miranda is fab!
(But have to say I think my Napoli song is better'n theirs!)

Wot buddhuu said. AIaG feels like being beaten over the head with how bad The Maaan is when a verbal stiletto to his ribs might have been a better option.
I'm not sure you can call a song Arrogance, Ignorance and Greed and live in a system where we benefit from its trappings.

Not a huge fan of SoH. I find the lyrics of their worthy songs feel just the teeniest bit clumsy. The fellas make nice enough music, but I'm afraid it's a "meh" from me.

Linton Kwesi Johnson was (is) a great one for me when it comes to political song. Even though his newer stuff is more personal, it's still excellent. As for Show Of Hands, they're far to emo-folk for me, if that's a genre. Good luck to them though. G'luck lads!

Jim Moray is also too emo-folk for me btw. And June Tabor. It's a wide church with many celebrants. And Maddy Prior.

Crikey, the whole damn folk scene. I'm off to a poetry forum to calm down.

Bill Jones was flute/whistle tutor for Caedmon folk when I started going in the Autumn of 2004. After she had her second child, she came back for a while, but felt that her children needed more of her time so she stopped. So I reckon she is busy bringing up her children at present.

"the Amazon reviews, for what they're worth, seem positive on the whole."

They are, but there is rather more dissent there than Show of Hands are used to seeing. In enraptured and enrapid Show of Fans terms, it's a bit like the period at the end of the 1980s where Margaret Thatcher completely lost it and the previously besotted Conservative Party shortened her standing ovations from ten minutes to nine and a half.

I saw her with Bill Jones, years and years ago. I thought she was pretty good then. I'm glad she's still making a career out of music.

Does anyone know what happened to Bill Jones? She was everywhere for a while and then (I think) had some time off to have a baby and was never heard of again.

Amazon reviews? Well it's a moot point. If you look at the 32 reviews in general,22 reviews rate the album with 5 stars; 3 reviews give it 4 stars and 5 reviews give it 3 stars. That's not bad, on the whole. The remaining two reviews rate it 2 star and 1 star respectively.

So - modified rapture. I'm not particularly interested in the music of SOH meself, but the Amazon reviews, for what they're worth, seem positive on the whole.

The answer is probably there in the reviews of Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed on Amazon. Not in the fawning BBC one on the product summary, or the glowing tibutes at the top of the "most helpful" list, but among the ones lower from disappointed former fans, many of whom do not seem to like what they heard on the last Show of Hands CD. At least, that is what I deduce from titles like:

"Very dissapointed";
"It's ok, but lacking the pasion of earlier albums";
"Not their best";
"I feel let down";
"Just give it time" (Claims you have to listen 12 times before you like AIG - course if you don't like something you are hardly going to give it 11 more chances);
etc.

I first came across Miranda Sykes as a member of the Robb Johnson band (Robb seems to have a knack of finding Excellent Famale musicians) and have been well impressed with her playing AND her singing on a number of occasions since then ! Not any musicians could get away with a Solo Club set JUST playing Bass and singing !

My question about Miranda Sykes was based on the editing of the video. Lots of shots of her face but not enough of her hands to show if she was really playing the instrument. My knowledge of Show of Hands is rudimentary at best. Thanks for the info.

I quite like Show of Hands. I've seen them a few times and have enjoyed them. For the beneifit of Songbob, SOH are a 'duo' from Devon who write and sing some pretty good protest songs about the state of England as they see it.

Miranda Sykes joined the band a few years ago to play the bass. In my opinion she's the best thing in it. I saw her a few years ago (forget who with) and have liked her for some time.

There is a lot of doubt now as to whether the band is a duo or a trio. They won the Radio 2 folk award for Best Duo last year, though Miranda has been with them for at least 3 years.

Well, Lizzie, I buy their CDs (some of them), I go to their concerts (sometimes), I have even, on occasions, had a conversation with them, but I'm not going to shout and scream like a demented Sethette.

As for taking action:

I'm a member of Amnesty, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, Republic, The Green Party, Hope Not Hate, Folk Against Fascism.....and I used (when I was younger and better able to take the extreme violence against us) actively involved in anti hunt protests and undermining the dog fighting and badger baiting rings.

Bloody 'ell, I need a rest from time to time.

From: Dave the Gnome

OK, so assuming the initial question is out of genuine interest rather than the wind up I suspect it to be, I am quite happy to answer it.

OK, so WHERE are all the new Show of Hands fans in here????? WHY aren't you all over on the BBC board, extolling the brilliance of 'Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed'???????

I can only speak for myself of course so I am not giving an answer for everyone 'on here'. But I suspect my reasons may apply to a few.

I do like SOH and Phil and Steve as individuals. They are not my favourite but let's leave aside personal taste and as why I am not raving here, on the BBC or anywhere else about my favourite. Well, firstly, I would find it difficult to put a favourite tag on any individual act. I love all sorts from AC/DC to Paulo Nutini. I am passionate about traditional music as well as contemporary and, while I tend to play and sing traditional songs I probably listen more to contemporary stuff.

So, why am I not 'extolling the brilliance' of any of them?

In a nutshell, and at the risk of opening myself up to abuse from certain parties, I don't feel the need to. I never have and never will understand the need of some people to let everyone in the world know that my favourite act is A, B or C. It is a mqtter of personal taste and I would no more dream of inflicting my tastes on anyone else than I would of telling them to wear my Hawaian shirts!

I understand that I am about to be accused of being 'souless' or having no passion but I can assure everyone in advamce that is simply not true. I enjoy music as much as I did when I was younger. More so in some respects. I would not enjoy being so fanatical that it rules my every word and action.

That is just me. An individual. Some people think and behave differently. It does not make them wrong. Get used to the fact that everyone is different.

Hope this helps.

DeG

Dave H Why not?   Show of Hands is possibly our best Duo/Trio ever. The songs Steve Knightly & co write are factual & enjoyable,Arrogance Ignorance & Greed being one of the best, Roots & Country Life another two. They should be played on ALL RADIO stations far more offten. As for Miranda & her bass playing (I don't usually go for femal artists) she is fantastic & adds that extra dimension to SoH as well as The Phil Beer Band & her own (Miranda Sykes Band) album is well worth a listen. Lets hear it for more from SoH & antother artists writng about todays plights.

"Is that woman really playing the bass or is she just there for window dressing?"

"That woman" would be Miranda Sykes, a fellow Yellow-Belly, a superb musician and singer, member of 'Show of Hands' (amongst other ensembles - notably 'Firebrand', excellent but sadly defunct), excellent solo artiste in her own right, and all-round jolly good egg.

She is most definitely not "Just there for window-dressing", she's an integral part of SoH and, since she joined, has added a hugely beneficial new dimension to the band's sound, instrumentally and vocally.

IMHO.

I thoroughly endorse what Ian has just written. A few years ago Oxfam held a song contest with "Only one Earth" as the subject. As it happened I was the winner of that competition, but they did not want to use the song even though I offered it to them.
          Because I am not an "acclaimed songwriter" or a celebrity's daughter the song has now returned to Oblivion.

There are lots of excellent songs out there pointing the finger at who's wrecking the planet - and wh£$y. Some of these songs, like Spectral Paradise, are well over twenty years old.

There's a danger songs are seen as fantastic only when they're written by someone famous.

As Ron Bankley once told me, never under estimate the power music can have on a heart ... Good words Ron, we all should write more music with a conscience (myself included) when I look back Owens Appalachia is about the only one I ever did that had a social message. All the others are just touchy feely stuff ...

Maybe I need to think more ...

OK, so WHERE are all the new Show of Hands fans in here????? WHY aren't you all over on the BBC board, extolling the brilliance of 'Arrogance, Ignorance & Greed'???????

Is it that you don't, truly don't understand the impact that words can have on messageboards, to get others to go and discover superb songs, songs that stop the Silence of the Good once and for all????

Are you watching the sea turn black????
Are you watching the sand turn to plastic????
Are you watching the beaches in Hawaii becoming covered in filth????
Are you watching Mitsubishi stockpiling the Blue Fin Tuna because they know it's shortly to be declared endangered?
Are you watching them attack the Greenpeace Volunteers who are trying to stop them fishing the bluefin to extinction?????
Are you watching the silence of Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil take over the media around the world as BP buys up the search engine words from Google and Yahoo....

ARROGANCE IGNORANCE AND GREED - YOUTUBE

I'll be asking questions on it later...and on The Cold Heart of England as well, as our High Streets become Dust Bowls where only the ghosts of our once loved shops can be imagined, if you remember back, hard enough...

Shit! We are in such DEEP SHIT!!!
