Subject: RE: Padstow Folk 'club' Summer 2010 From: breezy Date: 05 Jan 11 - 06:27 AM No , just I hadnt seen the words and Dave Toye the author gave me a link to them , like you he is very sharing, and its got a jolly tune, he sang it out on the harbour last May day, he had partaken of a few, he's a rather good singer guitarist too and very amenable the timing of it with R S 's birthday - please pronounce as seen - was purely coincidental, but appropriate methunks. John likes songs Do you ? Hear John at Herga on Mondays John likes Kitty. hear Kitty sing too, buy kitty's CD with Derek Burgess John likes Brent Cross, but not when its snowing and they close it and it takes 9 hours to get to Hatfield. See John fume in traffic |

Subject: RE: Padstow Folk 'club' Summer 2010 From: GUEST,Padstow Mayday Date: 29 Aug 10 - 04:03 PM Hi John I have tried to email you the lyrics of my "Mayday" song that I sang with your guitar on the quay but it keeps bouncing back so I searched for you on google and found this thread. I wrote this about 20 years ago and lyrics are: Padstow Mayday (rough recording at http://www.davetoye.co.uk/gatwick.htm bottom of page) The sun it shone bright on the first day of May When I heard of some music come drifting my way The drums and the sounds echoed up through the town Summer's a coming today all around REFRAIN Padstow celebrates it's sacred day With the blue and the old Oss on the first day of May If you don't like the music, get out of the way (or be on your way) For Summer's a coming, a coming today Down by the harbour, the Peace 'oss comes out The mayers all greet it, with a hell'ava shout Straight down the Drang, and in to the Square Laughing and singing, and meeting friends there At the London, Commercial, the Customs House too The Shipwrights, the Lion, they stop for a few Then it's all back again, to drink some more beer If you're not in Padstow, you'll wish you were here Down by the maypole, the young girls do dance The young men do kiss them, just given the chance The hypnotic drum beat, gets a grip of your brain And even the old ones, do feel much the same When the Old Oss comes out, at the back of the Lion Down by the quay side, it prances in time Friends and relations, and those from the past Are all there on Mayday, and dance to the last The 'oss it swirls round at a hell'ava lick And is tamed by the teaser - well, just for a bit Girls in their whites, bluebells and cowslips Link arms together and let voices rip The people of Padstow remember the day Their thought's turn back homeward, if they're far away Memories of loved one's, no longer here Return on Mayday, as they shed a tear Let me know if you pick this up and if you are coming down to Sussex anytime.
