We had a memorial service for a friend of mine named Hal Hawk. He died Monday of a massive heart attack. It was sudden and his wife Jean and our Rector Quintin Marrow was there. The Rector just happened to be visiting them at the time. He died instantly in mid-sentence. He was only fifty-four.
On such short notice the church was packed to the rafters with his friends. If only I had half as many friends.
Hal was an exuberant and loud person. He was also giving and loving and he loved the Lord. He also loved folk music. He and his wife formed a combo consisting of various musical instruments and they played every Sunday at the second service. He would also periodically hold folk song sing alongs in the parrish hall with the words projected onto a screen for everyone to see. He also encouraged anyone who would to come up and sing solos. I did my share.
I just wanted to let you know we lost a good one and that it can happen fast and unexpectedly. Hug those near you and let them know how much they are appreciated and loved.

Craig

You have my sympathy. I have also suddenly lost good friends, good people. Hold your memories of him dearly. Celebrate his life, and what he brought to you and others. And I'll remember to hug all of those I care for while I still can.

Craig, I'm very sorry about your loss. He sounds like he was a man who lived life to the fullest right up to the end.

Well, my friend, you have begun to fulfill your obligation very well. The road I have travelled has caused me to ponder these things. I have often wondered if when it is time to take that walk, what will be left of me here. I found the answer in the deaths of people like your friend, Hal. Immortality is achieved when we have left behind friends and family who loved us and miss us in our passing. If we didn't share our selves and our gifts freely and generously, then a few years after our passing we are gone. But if our legacy was love and sensitivity, giving of ourselves fully and sincerely, then the only obligation left for our family and friends is to sing our song. Your friend obviously did his part, and bless you for doing yours.

Here's to Hal, a good man, passed through the veil, but his song is still playing.

All the best,

Big Mick

I'm sure his wife will appreciate your words Big Mick. I know of no better people than at the Mudcat.
