Yeah, Rob... Just Googled up "Redneck Mother" an' sho nuff was ol'er than I thought, ahhhhhh, Mister Hubbard.... Cool beans... I gotta buy some more of his CD's... All I know is that he is the *shits* (Georgia term for great)...

He's got this song about dreaming he is in Hell which also is the *shits*... Wish I were younger so I could remember all them words... Be nice to pull it out now and then... Brain just don't take in long songs any more... The ones I know, like "Redneck Mother", I know... But ol' squash ain't what it used to be...

Ya'll go listen to Ray, will ya'???...

I opened up for Ray at The Downhome in Tenn. In my book Ray is one of our best American songwriters and he is the real deal. And a good guy to boot.

Here's one of my favorites from Ray

Screw you, we're from Texas

I got on my cowboy boots, jeans
And Hawaiian shirt, mirrored sunglasses
And a mobile phone
I guess I look like some Port Aransas
Dope dealer that's out on bail
Just trying to get home
Well I ain't in jail and I got me a guitar
Got a little band that's hotter than a rocket
Sometimes we're sloppy
We're always loud, tonight we're just ornery
And locked in the pocket

So screw you, we're from Texas
Screw you, we're from Texas
Screw you, we're from Texas
We're from Texas baby, so screw you

Now I love the USA
And the other states
Ahh, they're OK
Texas is the place I wanna be
And I don't care if I ever go to Delaware anyway
Cause we got Stubbs, and Gruene Hall and Antone's, and John T's
Country Store
We've got Willie and Jacky Jack, Robert Earl, Pat, Cory, Charlie and me
And so many more.

Sing it with me--
Screw you, we're from Texas
Screw you, we're from Texas
Screw you, we're from Texas
We're from Texas, screw you!

Now Texas has gotten a bad reputation,
Because of what happened in Dallas and Waco
And our corporations well they are corrupt
And the politicians are swindlers and loco
But when it comes to music my friend
I believe these words are as true as St. John the Revelator's
Our Mr. Vaughan was the best that there ever was
And no band was cooler than the 13th Floor Elevators.

So screw you, we're from Texas
Screw you, we're from Texas
Screw you, we're from Texas
We're from Texas, screw you!

I love the guy's music. He lives in Wimberley, Texas and hits a guitar shop there I've been known to frequent. His "Hey That's All Right" is one of my favorites:

Well now me I've been hanging out down at the Harbor with them old hard boys from the double A
Yeah like old stories they tell how they ain't gonna be a-drinkin just for today
And then I take that guitar you give me the one I didn't pawn and I go over to this little folk club and I wait around to play
Cuz now I can do what I want but I gotta ask a favor ever' day
Hey that's all right, I believe I'll be ok

"After The Harvest" is another winner.

No more stories but if you hang around Wimberley, you will run across him sooner or later. Alejandro Escobedo lives there as well. Laid-back little town between Austin and San Marcos (I'm from Houston so don't get up there that often). Hill Country Guitars, which I am in no way affiliated with, is a great store I've been dealing with for years- five Collings', a Huss & Dalton, and Froggy Bottom later and I should have just bought the damn store.

Ummmm, I'm just a hillbilly bluesman, but what are these "Collins"??? And, ahhhh, prolly showin' my complete ignorance but I ain't to sure what "a Huss & Dalton" or a "Foggy Bottom"... Okay, "Foggy Bottom" is a stop on the Washington D.C. "orange line" subway but I get the feeling that ain't what yer talkin' about???

(Collingsgirl is from Mars, Bobert from Venis??? Help...)

Well I know people in the UK with Collings guitars, so I'd assume that Huss & Dalton and Froggy Bottom are also guitar brands. Probably not cheap ones as I know the Collings' are definitely not lows-end of the market jobs! Hence the "buy the store" comment!

Collings makes some of the best guitars - and mandolins - available today. As someone once told me - If you want an old Martin buy a new Collings. Both of my Collings guitars - a German topped OM and a 000 slothead - were purchased from Hill Country Guitars when I lived in Ft Worth.

Yankee made if I remember correctly. Pretty darn good too if you like geetars made north of the border { aka Mason Dixon line }.

I always figured you had a foggy bottom anyway.

Well, the links tell the stories really, but Huss & Dalton guitars are made in a small Virginia shop and the Froggy Bottoms are made in Vermont in an even smaller shop. H&D tends towards a vintage Martin sound and the Frogs are just in a league of their own.

Collings guitars are made outside of Austin; the sound is a bit brighter than what one might find on a good Martin but I'm partial to the sound and enjoy the guitars a lot.

Well, thanks fir that info, Wes... I don't play that kinda music no more so I gave my '66 Martin D-18 to my great niece who does... Okay, I had to keep the original hardshell case that anyone who has seen it knows why... The poor girl couldn't carry that case into her high school without ngettin' suspended... lol... I carry my resonator in it, tho...

I have a 1967 D-18. It's the one guitar I'll never get rid of. It's my "Ol' Reliable".

Wes-

Kevin Davis sold Hill Country Guitars; I got on well with Kevin and the new owner is an equally cool guy. I'm considering a mandolin the shop has for sale.

The one Martin guitar I have is a 1970 D-18 and it is definitely an "Ol' Reliable." These days the Froggy Bottom is the guitar I reach for when playing alone- it's a little parlor and just thing for sitting back and entertaining myself.

'Round these parts everyone who wants a Martin but can't afford one buys Blue Ridge geetars... I donno... I'm not over impressed with 'um... I had a nice little parlor geetar that I bought for $25 in a pawn shop... It was a "Syaria" and played and sounded like a dream... Leant it to my son who put it in a closet where his mother's roof leaked... Got back a completely ruined instrument...

Sniff...
