Try asking on a specialist bagpipe forum such as www.bobdunsire.com
There's enough expert pipers on there to make it quite a long thread.

Otherwise, you get what you pay for (or not, if you don't)

go onto ebay look for geofrey pipes yes they are pakistan pipes but my pipe major is now looking to buy the whole of his band these pipes, the quality is very good the tone really good, in fact when i go to practice he tends to use my pipes as an example to the doubting thomases, oh yes some of tyhe really cheap pipes are total crap but i can and will reccomend geofrey pies, they do an extra long chanter that is perfect, well almost

You will require a practice chanter to learn all the fingering and the tunes.
Kintail as mentioned above or McCallum bagpipes..google up either and email them for advice.
I would advise you to google up college of piping they have a SET of ace books and cd`s to help you on the journey of the GHB.
Find your nearest pipe band and email them.

Please, get a quality practice chanter and stay away from the cheap Pakistani chanters (and pipes). Sure, I know they are low cost, but the quality "pulls a high vacuum". You want a quality instrument.

When I was a Sprog in the RAF I was in the Apprentice Pipe Band - ALL the pipers had pracice chanters , which are a LOT quietr than the Chanter from a set of Full Size Pipes ! see them for sale in a lot of Instrument shops in London still and a sure you can buy one on line quite easily where ever you are

Hello there, all...

I know that one definition of a gentleman is "someone who knows how to play the bagpipes, but doesn't". That being said, I want to buy a chanter so I can begin to learn melodies and fingering positions, etc. Can anyone recommend a chanter?

Also, do any of our resident pipers play a "practice chanter", or do you play the one from your set (if that's possible)?

I have plenty of private spaces to learn in, whether indoors or out... far from civilization.
