I recently bought this book, Mixing Audio, on the recommendation of my mixing and mastering music evening course tutor. It's a fantastic resource. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in how to mix music properly. Unless you're already a fully qualified sound engineer, this will basically tell you all you need to know about EQ, panning, compression, ducking, limiting, dithering et al It's by no means easy - I've needed to read passages of it several times before they've made sense, and you need to try his suggestions out to get to grips with them. But it comes with a DVD with sound samples to help explain everything. It even has several project mixes, taking you how he tackled them. If you were to steadily go through the book over a period of weeks along with the DVD, you'd end up a pretty damn good home mix engineer.
