Welcome to the rest of the world Toronto!
I hope for the best, but I fear for the worst. I think it was only a matter of time before something like this happened.
I pray there are no deaths, and little distruction.

What I don't get is this... why would anyone do such a thing? Even the peaceful "protesters". Why?

The G8 and the G20 are aimed at solving problems. That is the aim. Are these protesters protesting the fact that things are not perfect yet? Good luck with that.

I find it all very odd.

Especially shututting down TO and spending $1.2B.

"Are these protesters protesting the fact that things are not perfect yet?"

Yes they are ... in fact many things are wrong in the world today ... the G20 are trying to apply 20th solutions t0 21st century problems.

Why couldn't the G8, G20 just hold a bunch of net meetings .. would have saved a lot of us Canadian taxpayers much needed money.

With all this being said ... my hat's off to the police for staying calm and not losing it.

sIx... so, "protesting" is seen as a way of spurring on our world leaders to do better? I thought that is what they were trying to do.

And, the protesters allow the opportunity for nere-do-wells to taint their message while not doing squat to change anything.

It all seems childish to me.

Vote... form political socities of mutual goals... whatever... but "protesting" at such a venue simply seems childish and insignificant to me. Providing a continuing commitment to real change far exceeds carrying a sign where it will make no difference.

In the end, it boils down to this... if the protesters were halfway intelligent, they would not be protesting. They would be organizing and getting their shit together instead of acting like children.

The problems the protesters protest did not just pop up. So why are they not organized and in great numbers? Not just in TO today! The answer is...?

Don't get me wrong. I am upset too. But this shit is inane.

I don't know gnu, to me it's just a disparate group of people with various causes taking advantage of an occasion where they will have the world's media attention, politicians do it all the time too with the bill being footed by the taxpayers. I rejoice that we live in a country which respects the right of peaceful assembly and protest, notwithstanding the draconian laws passed by the McGuinty government for this summit.

No one gets any message from the protesters.
Except for demonstrators and police, downtown Toronto was largely deserted.
The news media cover the rabble, kooks and vandals and their acts of destruction but nothing else.

The cost to Canadians is a billion dollars, storekeepers lose money and have do do repairs, and service equipment is damaged.
No benefits accrue from the demonstrations.

The Vietnam War ended because winning it was impossible with China and the Soviet Union supporting the North and the Viet Cong.

Comparing that conflict with vacuum-heads trying to disrupt a meeting of world leaders is nonsense.

I think you're overlooking the effect that demonstrations had on public opinion which, by most analysis, was one of the major factors in bringing an end to that conflict.

Great deal of difference: for one thing, during the Vietnam ordeal the protesters in the US had a very, very personal involvement and it was called "the draft" (a/k/a Selective Service). When people come to a "protest" ready to riot (as happens now) it is no longer a "protest" or a "demonstration" but a, well, a riot.

There's nothing to be gained from being pepper-sprayed, rubber-bulleted, beanbagged, teargassed, beaten, and arrested except among your "peers" ("Wow, he was busted in Toronto, man!"). The one thing that the "establishment" is and has been ready for is direct confrontation.

Instead, insert moles and have them work their way up to the top, THEN move the change. Problem is, the moles start liking the money and the perks....

I think we have to make a distinction between the legitimate and peaceful demonstrators and the shit disturbers, the "roving band of protesters in black balaclavas" whose sole purpose is to instigate a confrontation with the police - they're the ones busting windows and torching cop cars.

I'm proud to live in a country were one can bring their democratic protest to the streets.

and with that I proud to live in a country were the police are professional enough not to lose their cool with the protesters ... even while a minority of these protesters pushed their buttons to the limit ... they did not use tear gas, shoot rubber bullets and run into the protesting crowd en-mass bashing their heads with billy sticks.

I support the peaceful demonstrations as a right to assemble but I question what exactly is being protested against? This whole international conference seems to me to be a folly of fools from the start and the security costs totally obscene! For this I place the most blame at Harper's feet! Rather than spend well over a billion dollars trying to secure the largest city in the country these meetings could have been held at a military base where high levels of security are already in place. International discussions in preparation for the conference have no doubt already scripted any consensus to be announced and the face to face meeting of the leaders amounts to little more than dinner and a photo opp.
All that being said the stupid thugs starting the riots will give justification to these outrageous costs!

These people are black anarchists, deliberately provoking violence as a way of highlighting repression and undermining the legitimacy of government. Curiously enough, the result is exactly the opposite: strengthening repression and confirming the legitimacy of government. They erode the value of peaceful protest, and support the need for 1 billion dollars in security fences and repressive laws. They assume that a cheap version of the Hegelian dialectic will eventually bring about a reversal and realization of the evil of government, and the overthrow of all states.

They are childish fantasizing parasitic stupid morons.

yours,

Peter T.

Not knowing exactly what all is going on in Toronto, much of what I hear in the news reminds me strongly of "The Battle in Seattle" back in 1999. Similar situations. World economic conference at which many people are not happy with the way things are being handled. In Seattle, there were some 40,000 peaceful, well organized protesters marching and demonstrating around the Convention Center and the hotels where the delegates were staying. Many labor unions participated, and they stressed the idea of keeping the protest civil and preventing them from turning into anything violent or nasty.

But—

There was a group of goons, many of whom were from out of state (one group proclaiming themselves to be "anarchists" from eastern Oregon), who were not all that interested in the issues. They wanted mayhem. And instead of concentrating their attention to the Convention Center where the meetings were being held, they roamed all over the downtown area, smashing store windows, looting, and setting fires in Dumpsters.

And, of course, the goons got all the media attention, and what the peaceful protesters were protesting about got lost in all the noise, smoke, broken glass, and pillaging.

Was it, perhaps, the whole purpose of the no more than 200-odd people wreaking mayhem to draw attention away from the issues being raised by the peaceful, well-disciplined protesters?

I sort of wonder if something similar might not be what's going on in Toronto.

The question still remains unanswered why Toronto was chosen. This seems one of the most asinine moves by a government never elected by a majority and Harper must bear the brunt of the blame. I hope that he starts paying back the billion plus out of his pension! The anarchists were, no doubt, expected so the solution for all but the most stupid would be to meet where they could not go! This has to be one of the biggest boondoggles in our history!

I have no problem with peaceful, deliberate, well-reasoned protest. As a former National Guardsman and (I hope) a rational being I have a lot of problems with people burning, looting, and hurting other people no matter which side of the bayonet the wounded is on.

If you want a revolution, fine. Go start one. Just remember the price that must be paid and the responsibility you take on. (If you shoot at me, though, I tend to shoot back. Just an old habit, I guess.)

beware of agent/provocateurs... it's a common tactic to infiltrate a group and/or plant undercover security personnel to incite the crowd, to provoke the security forces to react against otherwise peaceful demonstrators. It's worth a few stripped down cars torched to justify the billion plus expense of protecting our glorious leaders and populace from vandal hordes at the gates of 'freedom'...

The Surete du Quebec were forced to admit that they had planted officers in the crowd during the SPP conference in Montebello. They were rock carrying, hooded inciters and were 'outed' by the other protesters. The giveaway was that they wore the same police issue boots as the uniformed officers..

when the Caledonia land claim stand off was happening in Ontario... undercover officers were brought in to act like taunting rednecks in an attempt to get Mohawks to be violent, thereby providing an excuse to send in the cavalry... it didn't work....

there's a lot more to it all than we're lead to believe..

We had the G20 here in Pittsburgh last year. They practically shut down the city. Downtown was closed down and boarded up. They closed the schools, and something like half the population had the day off from work.

The police cracked down seriously on anybody who even looked like they might protest for weeks before the conference. They're still trying to sort out the people who were legitimately arrested from the young people from the Universities who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

We wound up with some broken windows and a damaged ATM machine. On the last day, there was a nice, peaceful, protest. I'm all for peaceful protests. Apparently everyone cheered the Falun Gong.

The visual version of Ron's words above...

Canadian Police Rioters - The Proof

The Bastards.......

The police have very 'welcoming' outfits don't they? I think it would be better for diffusing a situation if they dressed them in pink, with colour co-ordinated sparkly high heels and handy clutch bags, rather than baseball bats and crash helmets, but hey, what do I know..Although I did like the guys on bikes, that was a bit cool...

And of course, pink, sparkly, high heeled shoes would be so much easier to spot amongst the crowd...

Heads should roll.....staring with Mr. Harper and working downwards...but hey, that ain't gonna happen is it.

Get ANGRY, people, because YOUR police just made YOUR country hang its head in shame....and told the rest of the world that The Bastards are just as much in charge in Canada as they are around the rest of the world...

BE angry, be VERY angry...and then, maybe do something about it, or...pretend it didn't happen.

Oh, and apparently, there's been a huge rise in cases of Ostrich Vision around the world, so I heard the other day...

Peaceful crowd singing O Canada boxed in and attacked at Queen and Spadina

If there are protests against the G20 atrocity tomorrow, I am going. I hope a few million of us show up in Ottawa and at the prov legislatures across the country to voice our shock and outrage

Don't despair, Ebbie, just get angry.   Despair leads to hopelessness, Anger leads to righting the wrongs, eventually.

And halfway through that video I posted, you'll see a Canadian Police Officer admitting they were his men...whilst trying to tell folks that no way would the one who held the rock in his hand have ever thrown it...(yeah, right)

daylia, thank you for posting that video, shocking...but not surprising. Those 'in charge' get more shit scared every single day because they know that the power of the internet is connecting people as never before, opening up the truth, recording it all in pictures...

Hopefully that video will have found it's way into the hearts and minds of many Canadian people, and others around the world...That was a totally unnecessary reaction to three people deciding to sit on the ground, others going to join them, whilst singing the Canadian National Anthem..and for that, the police charged, en masse, complete with horses...

Geez!

It seems Sunday attitudes changed with the police. Maybe they let the goon squads out that day.

I have heard via the media and 'elsewhere close to the source' that the police seem to reason that the 'perpetrators' in the crowd where from Quebec.

As (quite rightly) suggested by biLL, here is a very fitting song for this thread, one that Ron (Bankley) himself plays a big part in, along with Splitting the Sky and the Native American lady who wrote it, who goes under the name of Ann Onimus, for obvious reasons..

'Anthem for Dissent'

The words are on there, in full (I sent them in)..just press the introduction bit, under the video itself..then pass them round to as many folks as possible..

From the response to the video:

"The G8 and G20 are not legitimate. The G8 and the G20 are both self-selected, exclusive groups of nations that don't have any right to be making decisions that impact the entire world! They represent less than 15% of the population of the planet and their rulings affect 100% of us, whether we like it or not. It's an enforced oligarchy, it's anti-democratic and it's anti-capitalist.

"It is important to recognize the equality of everyone's voices in the shaping of multilateral economic, climate and trade governance. The self-appointed G20 and G8, lack complete democratic legitimacy and want to replace more democratic venues for worldwide debate!"

Maybe it's because George thought exactly as I do about so many things, saw through all the crap, as Iknow others do too, but I really wanted to put his words down, so here they are, and boy, this man spoke so fast, that you'd not belive it! Took me ages to get each word, but just like the brilliant words in 'Anthem for Dissent' these words need passing around, so they're worth every moment it takes to put them down in print.

I hope you enjoy them......

George Carlin's 'American Dream'

"But there's a reason, there's a reason, there's a reason for this. There's a reason education sucks and it's the same reason that it will never, ever, ever be fixed It's never going to get any better. Don't look for it. Be happy with what you've got, because the owners of this country don't want that. I'm talking about the real owners now, the real owners, the big, wealthy business interests that control things and make all the important decisions.

Forget the politicians. The politicians are put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice. You don't. You have no choice. You have owners. They own you. They own everything. They own all the important land. They own and control the corporations. They've long since bought and paid for the senate, the congress, the state houses, the city halls. They've got the judges in their back pockets and they own all the big media companies so they control just about all of the news and information you get to hear. They've got you by the balls. They spend billions of dollars every year, lobbying, lobbying to get what they want. Well, we know what they want, they want more for themselves and less for everybody else.

But I'll tell you what they don't want, they don't want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don't want well-informed, well-educated people capable of critical thinking. They're not interested in that, that doesn't help them. That's against their interests. That's right. They don't want people who are smart enough to sit round the kitchen table to figure out how badly they're getting fucked by a system that threw them overboard 30 fucking years ago. They don't want that.

You know what they want? They want obedient workers. Obedient workers. People who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paper work, and just dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly shittier jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits, the end of overtime and the vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it. And now they're coming for your social security money. They want your fucking retirement money, they want it back so they can give it to their criminal friends on Wall Street. And you know something? They'll get it, they'll get it all from you sooner or later, 'cos they own this fucking place. It's a big club..and you ain't in it. You and I are NOT in the Big Club.

By the way, it's the same big club they beat you over the head with all day long when they tell you what to believe, All day long beating you over the head in their media telling you what to believe, what to think and what to buy. The table is tilted, folks, the game is rigged and nobody seems to notice, nobody seems to care.

Good, honest, hard working people, white collar, blue collar, it doesn't matter what colour shirt you have on, good, honest, hard working people continue, and these are people of modest means, continue to elect these rich cock-suckers who don't give a fuck about them. They don't give a fuck about you, they don't give a fuck about you. They don't care about you at all, at all, at all. And nobody seems to notice, nobody seems to care.

That's what the owners count on, the fact that Americans will probably remain wilfully ignorant of the big red, white and blue dick that's being jammed up their assholes every day. Because the owners of this country know the truth, it's called The American Dream 'cos you have to be asleep to believe it."

Well, Lizzie, I certainly agree with what you say. The elite have their own institutions of learning. They seem to learn to lead, while the rest of us are taught to follow, but it's kind of hard to figure that out when you're six years old.

This will shock many people, which is a good thing.

Amy tells what happened when she was throttled, held down, cuffed, detained for nearly 13 hours, placed in a cell with 25 other young women, being told throughout that time she would be raped repeatedly and would never want to work as a journalist again. Some women were strip searched by male officers....

She's asking for an investigation. I sure hope she gets one...

Happy Canada Day...

so ironically we spent a fortune to come away with an agreement to cut deficits... I wonder where the cuts will occur ? not on armaments to be sure. politicians salaries ? I doubt it...
All the gear used by the security forces won't be going back to the store... and will come in handy for future crowd control ops. Scary times indeed...

In Pittsburgh, the protesters used horse manure as missiles. I hate to see good fertilizer go to waste.

I am watching the Fifth Estate on CBC about what went on with the protests and the "police"... I am struck dumb... how could that SHIT happen in Canada? Unreal. Unacceptable. Harper should be held personally accountable for that crap.

And, in the middle of the show they broke to a press conference of him condemming Gaddafi... Jausus H!!! It's sickening. Truly sickening.

Now, there wasn't any wholesale murder, but I really don't know how that prick can sleep at night without taking responsibility for what happened and setting things right.

Police actions in Ontario are a provincial responsibility; Harper can condemn, but cannot be personably responsible.

Would Ontario also be responsible for the out of province police (Quebec, and N.B.) who were helping with the crowd control and security?

Q ... I think Muammar Gaddafi would whole heartily agree with you on that statement above.

Number 6- Yes, they were under the supervision of Ontario police.

The vandals at the G-20 were not fighting for rights but to disrupt a peaceful meeting of world leaders, damage the premises of Toronto merchants, and interfere with the business of the general public.

Sorry Q, despite what you would like to believe the VAST majority were protesting peacefully as is their right under Canadian law. Most of those who broke the law were police officers and hopefully they will be prosecuted as an example to those who think they can impudently abuse innocent people. The call for an inquiry is among recommendations in the report — by the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and National Union of Public and General Employees — which is aimed at holding governments accountable and avoiding a recurrence.

Sorry, bobad.......... but most of those who broke the law were not police officers, but hooligans smashing windows, cars, and interfering with police work. There are plenty of videos, shown on TV, and used in making later arrests, showing these cretins.

The 'peaceful' protestors interferred with business, wasted thei own time and the publics, and were kept well clear of the G-20 leaders and their meetings.

The bastards that decided to spend a billion dollars for security in the midst of Canada's largest city are wholly to blame! This fiasco could have been held on a military base at next to no cost with sufficient security already in place. Harper's thugs are a total disgrace to anyone believing themselves to be peace officers! They acted like the bloody Gestapo!

BTW, the pool only costed $57k, which is a "fuck me!" amount for a small puddle ankle deep. The rest of the $2+M was for the deck chairs.

The bastards had the nerve to say "it was ONLY $57k"???

The troublemakers are often recruited by and sometimes are the undercover cops to incite disturbances and give an excuse to break the demonstration.

The reason that the G20 is being targeted has to do with the policies surrounding the treatment of poor countries (abusive lending practices) and environmental policies that are destructive. Also, slave labor in foreign countries with the eradication of unions, there.

Who the so-called anarchists are is unclear.

Remember that this was a suggestion made in Wisconsin by the Governor who considered breaking that demonstration by introducing troublemakers but for political reasons passed on it. He thought that it would put too much sympathy
on the side of the Union and against his tyrannical bill.

I've never met you Sandy, but having heard some of the lyrics you write I'd have a real problem seeing you as a person more worried about his hair than the country.

The Rhino Party might be the thing for you.

I'm likely going to vote Bloc in the next election. The MP from the area I live in is Claude Debellefeuille. I'll vote for her because she's honest. I'm fed up with crooks in government. I dislike the Bloc's language policy which just tries to strip English speakers of their language rights, but she's honest. That's a good enough reason to support a politician these days. Sad--but true.
