Subject: BS: Bobby Orr From: 3refs Date: 27 Jun 10 - 10:52 AM Had they done this in Parry Sound, I wouldn't have been so surprised(in reality, I was freakin shocked). Looking at who Bobby had to beat to get to the top, I think this is an incredible feat! http://www.nesn.com/bostons-biggest-sports-legend.html |
Subject: RE: BS: Bobby Orr From: GUEST,number 6 Date: 27 Jun 10 - 10:59 AM Fascinating. I would have thought Ted Williams would have been at the top. biLL |
Subject: RE: BS: Bobby Orr From: 3refs Date: 27 Jun 10 - 11:01 AM Ted Williams, Bill Russell and Cy Young! |
Subject: RE: BS: Bobby Orr From: gnu Date: 27 Jun 10 - 01:14 PM I immediately thought of Ted Williams, then Russell.. Bird. I would never have guessed Orr. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bobby Orr From: pdq Date: 27 Jun 10 - 03:08 PM Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, Roger Clemens, Jim Rice, Larry Bird, Bill Russell...all had more impact on Boston than Bobby Orr. If Ted Williams had not spent 5 seasons in military service, he would most likely be ranked as the greatest baseball player ever. Many still think he was. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bobby Orr From: 3refs Date: 27 Jun 10 - 03:23 PM I won't argue with you(on a couple of them), but none of those you mentioned had as much an impact on "The Game" as Orr did! Nor were any of them picked as a 14yr old to be a star! "There are stars and there are superstars and then there's Bobby Orr"! |

Subject: RE: BS: Bobby Orr From: pdq Date: 27 Jun 10 - 04:03 PM Perhaps I don't consider hockey and soccor to be the equal of baseball, football (USA type) or even basketball, but that's what makes a horse race... |
Subject: RE: BS: Bobby Orr From: gnu Date: 27 Jun 10 - 04:55 PM No doubt Orr was great... what use to amaze me was his ability to dictate the pace of the game. It would be flat out mayhem and he would get the puck and slow EVERYONE down with his slow and deliberate play... he commanded that much respect... and then, suddenly, explode. He was a treasure to watch. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bobby Orr (Boston's Biggest Sports Legend?) From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 27 Jun 10 - 09:00 PM My congratulations to Orr! He was to my mind the second greatest in NHL history, but if he had Howe's longevity he may have made #1! The Red Sox once traded a great pitcher to the Yanks, but his hitting was so powerful that the sent him to the outfield. If he had stuck around Fenway he might have made the list. I think they called him Babe something or other! |
Subject: RE: BS: Bobby Orr (Boston's Biggest Sports Legend?) From: Ref Date: 28 Jun 10 - 12:21 PM Ted Williams, Yaz, Clemens, Rice, and Bird were all difficult personalities when playing (and I give credit to Yaz, Bird, and Rice for eventually coming to terms with it!) The Bruins had a maniacal following in Boston that filled the Garden every game for bad teams. Bobby Orr was the savior, and complemented his talent with tremendous class as a person. He is still beloved in Boston, where he raised his kids. Russell SHOULD be revered as well, as he is every bit as gracious and classy a man, but suffers from the insular racism of the Boston fandom (not all of it, of course, but a sizable chunk.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Bobby Orr (Boston's Biggest Sports Legend?) From: Becca72 Date: 28 Jun 10 - 12:41 PM The first one who came to my mind was Cam Neely. |
Subject: RE: BS: Bobby Orr (Boston's Biggest Sports Legend?) From: Ref Date: 28 Jun 10 - 09:39 PM Great a hockey player and man as Cam was and is, he never brought Boston a Stanley Cup, nor did he fundamentally change the way hockey is played. Orr did both, and Russ...well, the banners speak volumes. No offense intended, but the question is kind of generationally loaded. |
