Mary-

We'd drive down to Boston to hear Lightning Hopkins, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee in the early 1960's. But we never lured any blues folks up to Maine.

But maybe someone else will chime in if we keep this thread alive.

Charlie: Thanks again! I know about the Chocolate Church and it is too "new" - has to be a place where folk and blues musicians performed in the 60s, specifically. There is a project called the Mississippi Blues Trail - you can find out more by Googling that name - and they are placing historic markers at sites where blues and folk/blues musicians performed.
Appreciate all the help, and if a suitable site for a historic marker is found in Maine I'll definitely post it here! Best,

Mary Katherine

Mary-

Another vintage gathering place for folk music has to be The Chocolate Church in Bath which is still on-going. I don't think it got started until the early 1970's though.

When I was attending Bowdoin College in the early 1960's we had a small group that loved folk music but we never found any place off-campus to play.

What kind of research project are you involved in?

I've just checked the Facebook page on Portland, ME, in the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's.

The gathering place I was thinking about was called The Gate.

Mary-

I can't even remember the one that existed near Longfellow Square in Portland before we formed the Portland Folk Club in the 1980's. It was the one that Schooner Fare Members used to hang out at before there was a Schooner Fare.

I haven't thought about it in years and the back-up memories aren't kicking in.

Does anyone remember anything about any folk/blues clubs in Maine which were open during the 1960s? (Doesn't matter if they are no longer open). Any help appreciated.
