Subject: Obit: Geoff Rye 1st July 2010 From: GUEST,Tim Edwards Date: 06 Jul 10 - 06:55 AM I've heard from his family that Geoff has passed away peacefully at home at the age of 95, and they were happy for me to post the news on this forum. Geoff was a major figure in the English folk music scene for many years (many will remember him for his work at Halsway Manor) and was awarded the EDFS Gold Badge a few years ago. For me he was a man who wore his great learning very lightly and who was simply one of the kindest people I have ever met -- it was a privilege to have known him. Rest in peace Geoff. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Geoff Rye 1st July 2010 From: Black belt caterpillar wrestler Date: 07 Jul 10 - 07:16 AM I am sorry that I had lost touch with him after moving north, but I did bump into him on a visit south a few years ago. If he did not agree with your opinion about something he was very good at telling you very politely that you were wrong, and convincing you that he ws right! His stories were fascinating to listen to, and as mentioned above, of the old school, few of whom remain. I used to hear occasional echoes of this type of thing when I worked at the Hydrographic Office. I shall treasure my memories of him, in deed I do find myself reminded of him more often than I would have expected. Robin Madge |
