Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 12 Sep 15 - 06:41 AM Dan - if you fell into the outdoor toilet, you'd come up with grapes in your mouth! Sure you didn't just give the dealer a little mudge with your elbow...? :-) I just got myself a new chronograph - modified ETA 7750 automatic movement - by Christopher Ward. Inspired by the RAF Typhoon fighter. It has a ceramic casing built around a titanium body. It's a C1000 Typhoon FRG4 - serial number 0115. C1000 face C1000 case back |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 11 Sep 15 - 08:35 PM So I go to an old antique shop. And find a mint 992b in the original box. The dealer had 350 on it and it was a deal at that price. He takes it out and drops it on the floor. Good bye balance staff. I ask him how much now. He says 150. Took it to mahlon and in 20 min he had it perfect. He said it is amazing condition. I will get you a picture Will. I don't need another cause I have 11 of them but what a deal. Of course mahlon would not let me pay him. So I will get even with him. The watch is new old stock, mint |

Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 01 Mar 15 - 05:22 AM Here's something a little different - an Omega f300Hz cal. 1520 - which is one of the early Omega electric "tuning fork" watches from 1970. I've never been a fan of quartz watches, although I have a couple of solar ones, but that electric/electronic short period in between hand-wound movements and full quartz is a fascinating one. The tuning fork watches - mainly devised by Bulova - still live on in the Bulova Precisionist, and their Accutron is a well-known marque. All sorts of makes, including Hamilton and Wittnauer, had a spell at tuning forks. They function at 300Hz - which gave them the name "hummer". If you listen closely, you'll hear that the mechanism hums just somewhere in between D and Eb above middle C! Omega f300 This little beauty was my Christmas present last year. |

Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 07 Nov 14 - 03:30 PM I don't post much on Mudcat these days but, as I've now created my watch website - Will's Watch Pages - I thought I'd resurrect this thread for those who still love the old watches and things related to them... |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 28 Jul 14 - 11:26 PM Hmmmm. A Lord Elgin like my black one, 21j, asking $89, no bids, up in 16 hours. 171394881652 |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 28 Jul 14 - 10:55 PM I picked up a Bunn Special, 60 hour, 1927 date, a couple of years ago. The price was low because the case has an initialed back. The dial is identical to your Bunn. It runs slow, 3min/week; I don't think it has been serviced since 1944 (watchmaker's mark). I like those Lord Elgin wristwatches too, some nice cases. I have one with a black dial and square face that is as pretty a "dress watch" as one could desire. Some bargains out there, I could be tempted to start collecting again. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Greg F. Date: 28 Jul 14 - 09:26 PM It is that for sure, Dan. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: GUEST,olddude Date: 28 Jul 14 - 09:23 PM sadly not a 60 hr one but a real beauty |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Greg F. Date: 28 Jul 14 - 09:20 PM Nice one, Dan - now, THAT's my idea of a pocket watch. With my eyes, I can't quite make out if its a 60 hour version or not. |

Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 27 May 14 - 04:10 PM Use till they quit, then toss or give it to a child as a plaything. It is a Chinese version of the dollar pocket watch of the old days, which were much better than the Atlas. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Mysha Date: 27 May 14 - 12:45 PM Hi, Sorry for the marginal topic, but does anyone have experience with these Atlas Editions pocket watches? I'm curious about them, but for their wrist watches but I've seen a description saying it stopped working after something like ten days. I'd rather not throw money at them if they can't actually be used as what they purport to be: Watches. Bye Mysha |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 22 May 14 - 05:31 PM When the crown is pulled out fully, it moves a hair spring against the balance and stops it - so the second hand stops as well. If you stop the second hand dead on 12 o'clock, then the watch can be synchronised exactly with another watch, or the speaking clock, or an atomic clock on your computer - or a radio time signal. Hacking is a feature of military watches. This little Hamilton dates from 1940, so the movement may have been made for military use - though the case has no military markings, and the dial has Roman numerals, both of which are not usual for military issue. My Hamilton 'GCT" (Greenwich Civil Time) 4992B WW2 navigator's watch from 1943 - one with a 24-hour dial - also has a hack on the seconds hand. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 22 May 14 - 12:37 PM The second hand can be stopped, for better synchronization. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: frogprince Date: 22 May 14 - 11:18 AM Very nice hacking second hand... Wutheheck is a hacking second hand ? : ) |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 22 May 14 - 06:55 AM Not much traffic on this thread these days, which is a shame. Anyway, I'll add a little something in the hope that those few of us who like these things are interested. Here's a stunning little (30mm diameter) Hamilton 987S grade from 1940, with a hacking second hand. The face is sweet - and the movement is just beautiful! Hamilton 987S face Hamilton 987S movement |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: GUEST,greek Date: 27 Apr 14 - 02:43 AM OK. I asked him to open it and I'll post more photos. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 24 Apr 14 - 11:42 AM Could you provide a photo of the back of the movement, after you open the inner case plate with the key wind opening? Or post any inscriptions that you find on the movement. I haven't found Chambers in the watch book I have. It may be the name of a store or jeweler, and more information may be found on the movement. The gold case suggests a good quality movement. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 24 Apr 14 - 11:23 AM 18k gold will almost certainly give it an immediate value of around £500+. Whether the watch is worth more will depend on the quality of the movement and the quality of the maker. The hallmarks will give you an assay office and a year. I can't tell from the photos, but there may well be a (case) maker's mark as well. If you can find a case maker and a date and a movement maker, then an internet search may well give you more info about probable worth. |

Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: GUEST,greek Date: 24 Apr 14 - 09:43 AM It is in excellent working condition. The only thing missing is the seconds hand. It is 18k gold except for the chain which is 14k. I don't know the answers to your other questions... Can you help me by looking at the photos uploaded here? Thank you very much! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 17 Jan 14 - 07:07 AM How long is a piece of string... The best bet is to look at eBay "sold" prices for 100-year old 18k gold pocket watches. Unless the movement and dial are exceptional, all the value is going to be in the scrap value of the gold. Is it key wound or crown wound? Is it a hunter, half-hunter or open face? Is it worn, scratched, dinged, perfect? Engraved, machine-turned, unmarked? What's the case weight without the movement. Also check out online auction catalogues - try: http://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb to see what the estimates are - but remember they're just a rough guide and may sell for a lot more. If you can post a link to some pictures here, we may be able to help more. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: GUEST,greek Date: 17 Jan 14 - 04:53 AM Hi everyone! A friend of mine has a CHAMBERS LONDON 18k gold pocket watch. It was given as a gift to his grandfather and has stayed in the family ever since. It has some marks on the back cover: JM, 18, crowns. Do you know if it's of any value and where can I ask about it? I can't find any info on the Internet. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. |
