The FM transmitter switch over to digital had been scheduled for 2015 by the labour mess, but thank goodness the Coalition has now postponed this.

This is good news indeed, as DAB transmission quality is very much inferior at 192kbps at best from BBC Radio 3 compared with over 1400kbps on FM.

AND, the sets are expensive and power hungry.
I have analogue radios in about every room, plus car.
I hope it never happens.

Oh shit, I am going to have to agree with you both (apart from the bit about the Labour mess) - an example of cross-bench rationality on the Mudcat if ever.

Another agreement from me. I have two DAB radios, one an expensive Roberts (no relation) model, and neither can compare with my trusty old FM sets (I haven't a clue how many AM/FM radios I have).
BBC Radio 7 broadcasting original stereo programmes in mono 'to save bandwidth' is just laughable.
The changeover may happen eventually, but I'm glad to see that the deadline has been abandoned.

I am also glad the deadline has been postponed, my car radio has died - car DAB radios dont yet work well - so I can get an fm radio fitted :)

But ...

I also like to listen to the radio in most rooms of my house & fm reception downstairs is apalling, but 2 DAB radios both work superbly well - & have far more stations than FM.

I bought small PURE dab radios - not v expensive with a bit of looking around.

Forced dumping/replacement of fully functional equipment , lunacy (IMHO)

H

I only listen to the radio in the car on my journey to and from work (40 mins each way). It only has a FM radio so I will be ok for a while longer then.

So what happens to Long Wave? At present you can hear Daily Service or Yesterday in Parliament. I don't have a TV but I assume over there you can get such stuff on 405 lines Black and White?
Will there indeed be any reason to play cricket when there is only digital?
Digital switchover is easy for me. I only listen to Radio4 so when it stops that will be that.
Shame, I'll miss it, but life's like that

The government is looking back enviously at the money made selling mobile phone bandwidth, and hoping they can raise megabucks, selling the old FM wavebands.
You didn't think it was about providing the listeners with a better sevice did you?

Giok is right. They will auction FM bandwidth like after Thatcher destroyed UKTV just to get at Thames because it broadcast Death on the Rock (incidentally I sympathise with the SAS on that one) they then auctioned TV bandwidth.

I think I can hear degradation even on the highest quality Ipod settings, too, but surely I am old and deaf so that cannot be so, can it?

I remember that in 1957 they were going to turn off AM radio, as everyone would be listening on FM

My main radio is a 30-odd year old Sansui receiver. The analog tuning offers something one cannot get with digital; it allows for off-tuning, slightly up or down, to allow for pulling in a signal competing with another signal on or near that frequency. The result is often a weak, somewhat staticky reception, but often just good enough to hear. Sometimes new is not better.
