From: GUEST,Chris Mason

Back when I was a little lad -- in primary school -- remember singing a song "Dear Little Choir Boys" -- does anyone have the full set of words ? I've got most of it, and the tunes, but it would be nice to rediscover the rest. What I have (for general amusement) is:

             Dear Little Choir Boys

Dear little choir boys robed in white
Angels of innocence sweet and bright
Butter wouldn't melt in our mouths so round
Sweeter little cherubs could never be found

(bits missing here)
The verger thinks we're blighters he knows us of old.

       ----------------/------------

Sometimes for a change we sing psalms.
We think we're very good at them and our choirmaster
    compliments us on our rendition.
They are a lot more difficult to sing than hymns 'cos the
words at the ends of the lines don't rhyme and anyhow
the lines are all sorts of odd lengths ranging from
those as long as the one we are singing at the moment.
To oo oo little ones.
Still they have a great advantage.
If you get lost you sing la la la and nobody notices the
    difference.
Our choirmaster says he knows why it is that we are so
expert at very long lines and can manage to keep
the right place even tho everyone in the congregation
is lost and out of breath and singing la la la and
pretending they know where they are.
He says it's 'cos we're gasbags.

We get an extra shilling for a wedding when we sing.
You ought to hear us giggle when the bridegroom drops the ring.
Winking at the bridesmaids we have lots of fun.
But we're sorry for the fellow when the deed is done.

(spoken)
During the singing of the next verse a collection will be
taken and we beg you to remember.
(chanted)
The Mothers' Union outing.
Foreign Missions
Choirboys annual treat
Restoration of the stained glass window over the front
               porch.
Not forgetting the flower fund.
Nor the freewill offering
And last but not least
The organ fund.

Hear the pennies dropping as the plate goes round and round.
See the vicar smiling at the lovely clinking sound.
We always put a little in it's quite the proper thing.
So our trousers have no buttons left we keep them up with string.

Dear little choirboys angels in disguise.
Note the charming innocence shining from our eyes.
Isn't it a pity Oh why must it be true.
That one day we shall all grow up and be like you.

I have a few more words but would love to have the music too. How do we do it? regards Val.

The bit you're missing is:

Verse 2

Every Sunday morning you see us in our place,
singing all the hymns with melody and grace,
The vicar thinks we're good boys but let the truth be told,
The organist says we're blighters he know us of old

For a bawdy connection, cf. The Verger in DigiTrad. (Sorry, I don't know how to make a link on his browser.)

I sang this in a Gang show in the 60's.
One verse said something about the vickar's sermons,
...he's got about a dozen
We told him that we'd heard em all,
you should have seen his face.
So now he shouts and thumps the pulpit in a different place.
