Except Road to Mandalay, which I just think captures the flavor of its time perfectly. And besides the Bellamy tune is great for climbing hills.

Saturday afternoon, Mizchuck and I did a duo at an art studio reception up at Killington. We had to go for 2 1/2 hours, and I had a cold and wasn't functioning well, so she did a lot of lead singing and fiddle tunes. We didn't do some of our standards, since I hate to sing them when no one's really listening to the lyrics, but we had fun dredging up some old stuff that had been neglected. I was so foggy, I can't remember for sure all the leads I did. As near as I recall, I did do these:

We had a fifteen minute slot at an "Auden and Folk" concert, songs collected by WH Auden and printed in " The Poets Tongue and "The Oxford Book of Light Verse". We decided to race through six and dispense with introductions. Whilst we stuck to the words printed in the books, everyone else, including Carthy, sang the "time revised" versions. Spanish Ladies was the only song in any of our current set although Lowlands and Let the Toast Pass will probably sneak into the next gig.

Bert, a couple songs I neglected to mention are, Oh, Suzanna, Hey ho, Nobody Home,Go tell Aunt Rhody, Careless Love, and Amazing Grace. At one two of the group homes I work at, we have a music therapist that comes and plays guitar for the clients, though his repertoire is much larger. He adapts each song to fit in a clients name. For instance in singing, "Baby Beluga", he substitutes a clients name and adjusts verses around some quirk in their character. I think that might be part and parcel of the folk process. Thanks, Mike

Dave, you ask 'Why ten?' No reason really. I was trying to get an idea of what people were singing.

Then when people ask 'What is Folk Singing?' they could look at this thread and find out what folk are REALLY singing.

There's an awful lot (most of them) of these songs that individually wouldn't be considered folk music. But as a whole they are what is being sung in the folk world.

The Beatles song is actually called "Something", but according to This site
the use of those words in the opening line was no coincidence:

Thanks for setting me straight on "Something in the Way She Moves," two entirely different songs with the same title. I do indeed remember the James Taylor song after reading the chorus supplied by Guest/Augie. I just wasn't aware of the title.

Now, it looks to me like George Harrison is the one who copped an existing song title from "a contemporary and label-mate"! I'm almost certain that the Beatles' "Abbey Road" album (featuring George's very well-know and often-covered SINTWSM) came out at least a year after that James Taylor album.

It is supposed to be "light," so I am leaning, so far, to playing "Folk Song Army" by Tom Lehrer, (each and every one of us...cares) and possibly "Somos El Barco" for that warm and fuzzy folkie sing-along togetherness angle.

By the way, I will repeat my offer: I have all of these songs transcribed (except the last two), and many of them with chords that I will share with anyone who wants them.

Mary - There does seem to be at least two completely different versions of this song.   I like this one as its nice to do a requited love song as opposed to all the lost loves. I particularly like the last verse.

It is indeed a different song. Taylor wrote it ~1968 and you can find it on the first James Taylor album (along with "Goin to Carolina in My Mind"). That first album was released about a year before the monster Sweet Baby James came out.

You might remember the chorus:

Isn't that a George Harrison song? I doubt that JT would use the same title as a monster hit by a contemporary and a one-time label-mate. (James Taylor was the first non-Beatle to sign with Apple, who released his eponymous first album in 67 or 68.)

Of course, I don't doubt that he'd *cover* it. I'm just surprised that one wouldn't know the origin of that well-known song.

If it *is* a different song, or if I am otherwise out of line, please enlighten.

Definitely. Shelves of Herring is a parody of Shoals of Herring. I heard the late John Dwyer (here and here) sing it many times. Pretty hilarious.

These lists clearly depend on what sort of event(s) you are singing at and where you sing, ie UK/US/Oz etc. As I am UK based and my most recent singing was after a morris/mummers performance (rather than at a folk club) my list is:-

In public? Hmmmh...At 1-2 songs per party, kind of hard for me to come up with 10 (I tend to repeat myself), but here's my current 10 favorites:

1. Smuggler's Song - Kipling/Bellamy, my perennial favorite
2. Logie O'Buchan - trad., as sung by Cilla Fisher
3. Willie and Nancy - Les Barker (for "Broken Tokens" at NOMAD)
4. Canaday-I-O - trad.; AKA "The Wearing of the Blue", a transvestite ballad a la Nic Jones
5. Maid of Cabra West - trad.; from Frank Harte
6. Whaur' Will We Gang? - A. Mitchell; a fine song about the death of the fishing trade
7. When This Old Hat Was New - trad.; my husband's song, I sing harmony all through

My last 10 were all done at Annap's Gathering in the gazebo on the Navasink. I had the great pleasure of accompaniment of Annap, Dick G, Susan of DT, Max, bbc, davidmc24, Duane D, and Jeri of NH. Wow!, what a crew! As I recall songs included: Isle of Haute Lullaby, Stewball, Sammy's Bar, The Loss of the Rupert Bay, Where Have All the Flowers Gone, Night Rider's Lament, The Unicorn, The Final Trawl, Goodbye, Fare You Well, and I accompanied Jeri & her fiddle on some of her original songs and others like Whisky Before Breakfast, and Ashoken Farewell. What a grand time!

Roger in Baltimore, I'm glad to hear about someone outside of Cleveland singing Tim Wallace songs. I've posted one of his songs to the DT, but have been reluctant to post more since I know he copyrights them, and haven't had a chance to ask him how he'd feel about it. For my money, Tim Wallace and Mark Graham are the funniest songwriters in the 'folk' community going these days (apologies to Lou and Peter Berryman, who have some gems).

Wyo, do you do Hard Times Come Again No More? Another one I like for a woman with a good voice and good range is The Lover's Return, an A. P. Carter song using the tune of Just a Closer Walk With Thee. John Prine's Paradise is another good one--I've heard it sung only by men, but there's no reason it shouldn't be sung by a woman. A lovely song on the same theme--but with not enough verses--is Aragon Mill. Every Night When the Sun Goes In is a great bluesy woman's song. --seed

The last couple of times Bill let me go out for an evening, we went to folkie parties. Here's what I remember of what I sang, in no particular order:

The Vacant Chair (Civil War song) ... All the Cowhands wanta Marry Harriet -- (A Western swing song from the 40's); I didn't start it, but I was the only one there who knew all the words ... Run Come See, Jerusalem ... I Dream of Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair (Steven Foster) ... "Carly's Song," a friendship song by Carly Gewirz ... Children of the Heavenly Father, translation of a Scandinavian hymn ... Have been practicing The Night Visiting Song (trad), Sheath and Knife (Childe), Put on Your Old Grey Bonnet (pop song from the 20's), Beautiful Ohio (pop song from the 20's), John Peel, -- a real gemisch.

By the way, katlaughing, I was happy to see that you sang The Wayward Wind recently. Lisa Null and I sing it sometimes and I've been wanting to try it on the zither, believe it or not. - Rita F

And I need to learn three new and wonderful bluegrass songs within two weeks for a contest that's coming up. Any suggestions? (I have a good range, and can sing way high up there...)

My usual solos with the Born Once Gospel Singers in performance are "Jimmy Brown the Newsboy" (A. P. Carter?) and "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" (Dylan) Others in which I sing verses and they join in the chorus in sings at Sally's house are "The Green Green Grass of Home," "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," "Sittin' on Top of the World," "Times Are Gettin' Hard"
Songs I'm planning for future Starry Plough performances include Bob Gibson's "Abiline," with my added verses, of course, "Jody and the Kid" by Kris Kristopherson, and maybe Doc Watson's version of "Alberta"

Well, we had an Elvis tape in the car on the way back from the jazz on Saturday so Ole Shep and Hound Dog were the last 2. At the concert I "joined in" (safely 50 yards back from the bands) with Peoria,
