I'm somewhat stunned to find this post buried deep in Mudcat - must have missed it!...

Subject: Green Dragon Summer Session 2010 From: Tig - PM
Date: 21 Jun 10 - 06:20 PM
When I was at Whitby last month I was talking to Duncan McFarlane about the Summer Weekend at the Green Dragon, Hardraw.
He assured me it was going on this year but I can't find the details anywhere.

...I must point out, I'm NOT the landlord or the 'organiser' - just a performer.
I haven't seen much in the way of publicity...
But I do assure those on here that this annual event IS taking place!

I can understand Tig's (and no doubt, many other's) confusion...
A 'new' event took place at the same location (end of Apr, start of May) which ALSO dubbed itself the
'Hardraw Gathering' - but was largely concert-based and charged full w/e festival-type prices!
Tig told me that she & others didn't go cause the 'Gathering' had 'moved its time-of-year and now 'cost'
- where previous gatherings had been 'free' and 'participant-based'.
They thought the 'new one' was the established 'Hardraw Gathering'!

Ah well - there's TWO mini-fests now... not one - grand!
I wonder why (to avoid confusion) landlord, Mark, didn't choose a different name for the new one?
I'll beat that info out of him (despite his size!) at the end of next week!!

And so.... in an attempt to be informative/helpful...

The year 2010 'Hardraw Gathering' takes place, as ever, at the back end of July...
specifically on Fri-Sun, 23-25th July

As ever, it will be primarily a 'participants festival'...
There'll be various rooms dedicated to singers, as well as musicians, sessions -
a real come-all-ye!
Workshops (for guitar, songwriting, and more!)...
Dancing troupes over the w/e (as ever) -
And, weather-permitting, bandstand concerts in the grounds leading to Hardraw Force waterfall...
...all for free!

Camping available on the 'improved' site...
Rooms at the inn still available for booking (at time of typing!)
A 'commercial' Campsite right next door...

Besides all the free stuff...
There will also be Concerts on, in the Green Gragon's main 'hall' Fri and Sat night
Various artists in those concerts - and elsewhere throughout the premises all w/e....
See here.... Hardraw Gathering
for the listing - though I do know you can see/hear my lot...
The Duncan McFarlane Band (both electric and acoustic) - as well as many more!

The sessions have traditionally gone on, in the bar rooms, till almost dawn Fri & Sat!!

All are welcome - see you there! Cheers! - Dunc

I think we must all be busy getting packed, ready to see you at Saddleworth this weekend, HA!

I'll be at Hardraw too, so you've a guaranteed audience of one. :-)

There was indeed a 1st May gathering at the Green Dragon. I was chatting to Chris Sherburn at the Ram Club (Thames Ditton) at the end of July, and he and Denny Bartley were back up to Hardraw on the following day. As it happened, I had a pint in the Dragon just a few days before (plus a squint at the Hardraw Force waterfall), and not a hint of publicity for the gig did I spot in the pub.

Just a reminder that the official Summer Gathering is this coming weekend.

I'm looking forward to seeing (in no particular order and not exclusively):

Duncan McFarlane Band
Chris Milner
Anna Shannon
Fyrish

and loads of other good music.

I hope Mr Fairholme has arranged the sunshine again!.

Hi Hipflask

John and I are planning to make it up to Hardraw this weekend. I rang the pub this morning to check whether we needed to book camping etc and got told 'No, we're not taking bookings - it's a free for all' but that the weather was wet. So - wellies as well as sandals, waterproofs for outside, cool things for inside ..... and don't forget the tankards.

See you there.

5 day forecast on BBC website is for Sunny with cloudy bits on Friday & Saturday, sunshine on Sunday.

Hopefully, wellies will not be required and tents can be pitched and struck in fine weather.

Thought we asked for some DRY weather! At least there should be some water coming over the Force this year :-)

Great weekend. Thanks to Mark, Yvonne and everyone involved in organising it. Good music and a great atmosphere.

There wasn't as much water over the Force as I've seen and it doesn't come over the top at the moment due to a rockfall in the winter. Mark says it's in his longer term plans to put them back as was done early last century.

The new loo and shower block was a definate bonus.

personally I thought it was the best one ever

Good mix of music (concerts and sing-arounds), good company and beer

Bit short on trad sessions but some folkies had chosen to go elsewhere it seems

Can't have everything

Gerry, you were well gathered, appearing on stage with most of the performers. I don't know where you get your energy from!

Seems strange to me that posters sound disparaging about the Green Dragon having more than one live music event.
The Gathering in May did not "dub itself" a Gathering; the landlord, whose personal choice the event was, chose to use the name for a number of reasons. Firstly, he has called his live folk music events a "Gathering" for about 10 years now. Secondly, it demonstrates that it is a small folk club style event rather than a big festival. Thirdly, being a wordsmith himself, he enjoyed the play on words with the nursery rhyme "Gathering nuts in May".....
As for sniping about the "full festival price" cost of the May event, I wish all the festivals I go to (& I go to a lot) were anywhere near as cheap: £50 for Steve Tilston + Roger Davies + Bob Fox + the Young'uns + Tom McConville Big Band + The Doonan Family Band + Sherburn & Bartley (Vin Garbutt had he not been stranded in Singapore by volcanic ash) and loads of brilliant but less well known performers. Amazing value I would say.
Personally, I think Mark Thompson the Landlord is a Live Music hero and should be supported, congratulated and thanked for his various promotions.
PS I am not a Performer and am only involved as an enthusiastic, volunteer helper. Sue

Here, here!

Congratulations Mark Thompson - A Real Mans Man, 'Champion of Live Music' and all round top fella!

I do agree that the July Gathering was somewhat less folky than I expected - however a fantastic acoustic weekend with some good sessions and a good standard of concerts too! I thought it was quite an eclectic "gathering" of music and a bit of dance to.

A tad disappointed that the stage musicians didn't join in the sessions as with other years and events - but can't win em all - perhaps it was too busy to fit them in? Another sign of its popularity.

Well done Mark & Yvonne, looking forward to the Brass Bands and The May "Folk" Gathering - does anyone know if the rumours about a Bluegrass Event are true? If they are I'll order a new liver!

PS Top Booze and Grub, loved it!
