I still think the blame lies mainly with Les and Maggie, Mick! They have been sneeking around quietly encouring people to hang about in Public Houses for Years to sing and play. Now not content with having us all miss spend our youth they are picking on the elderly as well. Fun is Fun but its about time they owned up to their missdeeds!

Well I must get back to attaching my Mark One Boran Beer tray to my Zimmer Frame.

Hi Les yes I know Calling the Saturday Night Session Anti Shanty is a Joke! That is why I said it was a Tong in Cheek Name I also know what a good session it is. I'm in complete agreement with Ossonflags about concentrating on the Positive. So to make it quite clear! Everyone is made welcome by Everyone at the Anti Shanty, (The name is a Joke), Session it is best described as a gathering of Good Friends who enjoy playing and singing together. I'm not sure who is to blame for this right good night but I suspect it is Les and Maggie.

As for the Squishy Beer Glasses carrying of I favour cutting Holes in the skins of Borans and Banjos to fit these Squishy Beer Glasses in to prevent spillages when carrying drinks from the Bar!

Les - my point on the glasses issue was to clarify the use of them in Hull.
I have been long enough on the scene to know folkies are not noted for knocking lumps of one another.

However,as you know , I also have experience of the other side of Hull city centre and the violence that can erupt when drink is in and wits out.

Clearly Mick the shanty events despite problems was highly succesful

Some ppl would have gone to original dated Hull Shanty now Maritime fest(later on) or

Bradfield/Mansfield/Saddleworth now just finished

However the original gripe was a generalisation covering many things happening all at once in the whole of Yorkshire!!

We do have a finite audience and festivals in my view are in danger of forcing out folk clubs! (separate topic chaps)

I was annoyed at the awful communications in place ~ Hull being one of many suffering

I don't mind the polycarbonate glasses, it's them squishy ones we had in the Minerva. It's a pain to walk back from the bar through a crowded pub with two full pints (it's a wonder they're aren't more accidents!). And of course the Hull Shanty Festival is infamous for its extreme violence (not)!

George, the expression Anti-Shanty was coined to cover the additional Saturday night singaround we've had for the last fifteen or more years to cater for those who don't want to go to the official concert, but would rather have the chance to keep singing their own stuff. It's called that 'cos we don't insist on a maritime theme, although many singers will continue with that theme 'cos it's what brought them here ibn the first place. In other words - it's a joke!

HUll Shanty festival certainly was not killed Ray!!!

There was a few problems agreed; but that did not detract from us all having a damn good time. The organizers did not know the state of funding until very late on and this caused them no small problems.

I and the rest of Owd Chyvers was booked to sing there so I can speak with a certain amount of authority on this subject as I was there for the whole two day and one night events.

People need to keep in mind some of the more positive parts of the festival.

Friday night in The White hart was at its usual high standard with many guests and non guests making the rafters roar with Shanty jack as MC.

Saturday was very busy agreed, with a projected 80, 000 people around the Marina.
The traffic control around Castle Street was a pain for some but this had to happen for the safety of all having to cross a busy arterial road.

Regarding publicity a bit thin on the ground admittedly but what was different to other years? .

Saturday morning BBC Radio Humberside gave great coverage to all the events. We and other booked artists did spots on that station as well as interviews.

Excellent programmes and running orders for the maritime were available free to everyone at the Hospital radio stage.

The area back of main stage was noisy but there was a fair sized audience who stayed, listened and enjoyed to what was on offer.

All the venues were well attended, Barge Amy Howsen, Ruscadors,, Green bricks and Minerva was the indoor locations and again we played most of those on the both days and did not have any problems .John Connolly did tell me the Green bricks was hard work!!!

Sunday was a much quieter day with a great response on the open air stage and all venues. We finished our session at 5.00pm but some carried on until seven o'clock. Even the weather stayed reasonable!

All people I talked to; performers, visitors and Hull people all said what a great weekend it was...

Oh just a bit on the plastic glasses, this has been common practice at busy times in Hull pubs for a couple of years now. Even though I like me drink out of a glass I can see the reasoning behind the use of poycarbonate glasses. If you have seen some one glassed in the face- as I have seen – you know that keeping glass out of the way is a small price to pay.

This is an article from The Hull Mail:

Dozens of serious eye injuries have been prevented since the introduction of plastic glasses, the Mail can reveal.

Polycarbonate glasses were rolled out in Hull in May 2008 when eye surgeons were treating 20 glass attack victims a year.

But since the campaign launch, led by Humberside Police and NHS Hull, not one person has needed eye surgery as the result of a glassing.

The campaign has saved the primary care trust more than £7.2 million a year in surgery.

Each eye operation costs the health service and taxpayer £184,000.

Paul Laing, public health lead from NHS Hull, said: "This project has had a massive impact on reducing alcohol-related harm in Hull.

"It has resulted in savings to the NHS of approximately £7.2 million over the two years this has been in force through the reduction in ophthalmic operations.

"Before 2008 one of our eye surgeons was the busiest in the country, performing 20 operations a year for glass attack victims alone.

"But these operations have been eliminated and since May 2008 the department has had no admissions from this type of attack.

"Glassing attacks do still happen and still need to be reduced, however, from a health perspective, these incidents have not resulted in significant eye injuries leading to surgery."

I would have loved to have been able to go to ether event or both. Having been to both in the past I can say that they were both great festivals.

Clearly savings and disruptions caused short sighted Hull Council decided to kill 2 birds with one stone

Result killed the Shanty event

2 events, two opportunties for Hull to enjoy itself amd make everyone happy

Or organise properly and learn from the disruption

Well with hindsight I think I would be right in saying that the End of the financial year prevents too much pre planning and commitment by Local Governments until the finances for the new financial year are sorted out.

On top of that I would speculate that the 2010 elections in May would have caused further problems. With a sorry you can't cut the funding of my traffic management department because we can't cope as it is! Ringing in our ears.

It would seem easy to forget that the Minerva was struggling to survive in its recent past. As for the Loud disco music blasting across the Marina to make it sound like, to some, the place to be. Giving the impression that it a vibrant and popular attraction providing employment opportunities to the people of Hull whilst contributing to the councils coffers by way of business rates.

How can Hulls International Shanty Festival show the council just how popular it is?
Well I know it tong in cheek name but advertising the Famous Anti-Shanty Session could be seen as well we don't like Sea Shanty's. Why not change its name to Songs Ashore? How about a Photography Challenge that shows the faces of tourists and locals enjoying a wonderful day at Hulls International Shanty Festival. Make sure the Councillors see with there own eyes what an asset to Hull the Festival is!

Oh and if possible Book the Ex London Steam Tug the Challenger for the Festival! Birth her so the Smoke from its Funnel heads towards the Disco and between Shanty Sets and let her demonstrate just what a Bass Note Sounds like. I guarantee the Disco King will turn off his smoke machine after Blowing out his Speakers trying to compete! But just in case the wind changes direction turn of the Smoke Detectors in the Green Bricks and the Minerva. :-)

Regardless of the road system planning problems created by the partially sighted designers, Castle Street is quite rightly closed off due to the sheer numbers of people trying to cross on one or two crossings which is patently dangerous on such a fast road with heavy traffic. The daftest part was not rerouting traffic properly, but hey, we've all been down that 'detour' that peters out into a dead end or sends you 50 miles out of your way.

Malcolm - what bugged me more than anything else is that when I had finally managed to find a part of Hull that I recognised (and knew the way to the marina from), then walked across town to the marina, there was no good reason for the road to be closed.
If they had put fairground rides, or market stalls on it, I could understand the closure. What we had was an empty dual carriageway with anti-cross barriers along the length of it. The only places you could cross were at the traffic light controlled pedestrian crossings, so as someone on foot you were in essentially no different situation than if the traffic was flowing normally and occasionally stopping for a red(traffic) light.
In other words - three hours wasted for no good reason.

The man who was in charge of the traffic / roads system in and around Hull in the 1980s when all the current system was planned never held a driving licence or drove a car (the two are not necessarily incompatible).

I spent the first 50+ years of my life in Hull, love the place, but can understand the frustrations that people from elsewhere feel. Having said that most places are the same where the people that do get on with it and those that don't sit on the council.

We spent a couple of hours plus at the event on Sunday and really enjoyed ourselves but I did have the advantage of local knowledge.

This was the first year in many that I didn't bother with Hull's shanty fest, precisely because I couldn't see how shanties at one side of the Marina could co-exist with an amplified stage only a couple of hundred metres away.

If anything is planned for September, anybody bringing a boat in from any of the other havens on the Humber will find the tides on the second w/e in September far more user-friendly than the w/e before.

Cavia P, my fears for the shanty fest were the same as yours and unfortunately came true.. I just knew the shanty side of things would be overshadowed by all the other goings on last weekend, especially the Clipper. I can understand from a financial point of view why the council would want to lump everything together, but it's no good if it puts people off attending the shanty!

A similar thing happened with Hull's Humber Mouth literary festival, it used to take place in November but now happens somewhere in the middle of June, where it clashes with Beverley folk festival and also the refugee music festival in queens gardens.

Good to hear there may be some shanty activity in September where it used to be - I feel the stirrings of a grassroots rebellion!

Sorry we missed it. We'd already booked grandparent duty in Kent when I found the change of date. So no Polar Bears this year.
I was rather dubious about the powers trying to combine two music festivals plus a helicopter display team and all the other goings on!

Hull Shanty fest appears to have been turned into a side show this time. Lets hope they can do better next time.

I think at the moment the general view is to have a weekend of singaround with a (not-exclusively) shanty flavour in the old brewery room, with a monster tunes session in the boat room. This way we can accommodate everyone that's shown an interest so far, both here and people I've spoken to.

Hull Community Theatre are happy to do one of they're locally-based historical pieces. Any more thoughts?

I cannot believe the same people were responsible for the wonderful organisation of last year's 2 weekend events, and the appalling cock-up that happened this year. Please please to the boat organisers (Steve & son) and the shanty organiser (Pete) do not be dispirited by the council shambles and shabby treatment.

The lack of advertising.
The shabby treatment of visitors trying to get there.
The drowning out of the shanty music.
The short notice to the boat organisers.

All of these were appalling and inexcusable and down to the council.

We must fight back. Let them know how poor they were at every opportunity.

It's a shame the organisers want to move the festival permanently as July is an incredibly busy month but I did enjoy what we managed to see. I was slightly more fortunate than Geoff as I jumped out of the car after 2 hours to answer a personal emergency so got to see 1 1/2 hours more music :)

Mick - we had absolutely no intention of taking a car into the centre of Hull. We were suddenly presented with absolutely no other option, and no diversion signs to help us escape from the place!
I am sure that anyone in 'ull could have told us. I daresay that I could have rolled down a car window and asked opinions from the people walking faster that we were allowed to drive, and I'm sure that if asked, they would have told us we didn't want to be where we were. If you'd asked ME - I would have said I didn't want to be where I was!
That didn't change the reality, which is that we were stuck there in traffic with nowhere to stop, or park.

Was a bit noisy what with everthing else running at full pelt on the Saturday Do take your point about the noisy pa and that.

Estimated 80, 000 in and around the Marina.

Sunday was more pleasant.Was first time for Owd Chyvers at Hull Sea Fest though of course we all had been there under different guise many time before.

We had a great time and nice to see, hear and sing with old and new friends.

Hope to see some of you at Goole and Scarboro Sea Fest were Owd Chyvers are appearing at both events.

We got about a quarter mile from the docks then hit a line of solid scarcely even crawling, stuck on a no exit dual carriageway between two roundabouts for an hour and a half. The Council had closed a 200 yard section of the only road that takes all the traffic passing through Hull but didn't give any sort of diversion routes, or information about how to get round it. We were then funneled off into some side road to nowhere, and I had to guess how to escape from it, not knowing any of the roads at that end of the town. Once again the traffic wasn't actually moving at anything faster than a snail.
It took another half hour before I had got far enough out of town (probably back in the direction of Leeds) to escape the traffic and drive in the sort of direction that might take me round the back of town to the opposite side of the centre. Eventually I spotted the Shot Tower, which gave me a direction to aim for. Three hours after hitting traffic, I was eventually parked ready for a 20 minute walk to the dockside.
We arrived outside Hull at approximately 11.00am. Got to see John Conolly at 2.30pm. Couldn't hear him though as he was being drowned out by the prat on the microphone and disco music at the opposite end of the marina. The one who kept turning the mega PA system volume up and up and up and up then shouting into the microphone.
I can imaging anyone who was caught in the traffic deciding to never return.
Finally saw some French singing in the barge and had a short spell in the Minerva befor it was time to head home again.

The opening session in the White Hart was great. After that I spent the whole of the Saturday and Sunday in the Minerva which had a tremendous sucession of guests to augment a great singaround. Thanks to all the guests and singarounders who provided me with as good a weekend as you can have for nowt in Hull while still keeping your clothes on. Thank you also to Les and Maggie for organising the excellent Anti-Shanty singaround on Saturday night.And thank you to Shanty Jack and any more of the people who were resposible for organising the Maritme Festival. Shanty Jack said that from now on the event is likely to permanantly occur in the same mid July period, so you who could not come can now arrange yourselves accordingly to get the benefit - it's worth it.

It is unfortunate that Hull Sea Fever clashes with so much but hopefully the other events will add to the weekend rather than detract from it. As in the past with people giving their support we will make it a good'un .

In fairness to Pete I know he has tried his damndest to get the Council to revert back to September dates.

I'm crewing all day Saturday, but we intend to tie up at Admiralty Steps some time Saturday afternoon for a couple of hours so a short visit may be poss. Tides crucial.
Living in Hull all I have seen in advance about any shanty festival this weekend is rumour and hearsay from Osson and Les. You'd think the council could advertise it in their own publications if nothing else! They haven't even told the local media.
I disagree about previous years. Last year's and the 4 or 5 years before were advertised both locally, nationally and internationally well in advance. This year, bugger all!
Last year all of the coinciding festivals were absolutely brilliant, especially the French Fire thing. It did wonders for local pride and the local economy. I'm not holding my breath this year. Hopefully those who come to see the Clippers back in will notice there is some singing going on.

I've had a look at the Young 'Uns website, and they reckon they'll be here so that's good enough for me.

I can also confirm that the Famous Anti-Shanty will take place on Saturday night in the Minerva. The Anti-Shanty is there for people who don't fancy the Saturday night concert, or have run out of shanties to sing, or who would rather drink decent beer or (insert your own excuse here).

I have just rung the White Hart pub, which is in Alfred Gelder Street, Hull ( not to be confused with Ye Olde White Harte off Silver St and Bowlalley Lane)

I spoke to the landlady, Avril, who confirms that Shanty Jack, the Festival's director, has asked her whether a singaround could take place tomorrow, Friday, and she is very pleased to say yes. Furthermore she will at some point provide some trays of sandwiches to help the beer go down. The pub will be open from 5.00pm onwards but Avril does not really expect things to get going until after 7.00Pm.
Avril says that on Saturday and Sunday hot meals will be available.

I shall be there and Less of Hull says he will also be there.
How about you Ossen? And will Zeke and John be attending?
And you Willa, willa you? I know Hissyfits are at Saddleworth but can anyone else definitely commit? What about you, SiR jOHn of Hull, or might have something better to do?
By the way, Avril says that the opening times detailed in the link are out of date so she will definitely be open on Friday.

Yes Bob and Ray the change of date has had the predictable consequence that there would be a clash with other events - in this case with Saddleworth. I gather that Hissyfit were due to perfom at Hull but when the date was changed it clashed with their prior booking at Saddleworth: a shame for all of us.

But on to dealing with what is to be: last year there was, by repute, a tremendous singaround at the White Hart on the Friday night before the festival which I found out about too late to attend. Does anyone know whether that, or similar, has been organised this year or do we have to await spontanous combustion?

I think the issue is probably funding Ray -the cost of the clipper and the shanty and the jazz festival will put a strain on Hull city council's budget and combining them is problably the best rather than dropping one of the festivals. The timing of the clippers coming home is out of their control.

Calm down Ray never known you this worked up! I have had a word with King Knute and he has promised to turn the tide. Now having spoken to the Top Man he has told me that he will do his best to change the tide's.

Clashes of the magnitude of at least 3 festivals same weekend in short distance cause total havoc

Frankly I am pretty fed uo with ppl who are unable to work with others in simple courtesy of telling each other what the f""£ they are doing bookings wise!! and not just at 'Ull!

I hope I am not breaking the Official Secrets Act by posting the news on Mudcat but the Hull Maritime Festival, previously known as Hull Shanty Festival and also Sea Fever, is due to take place this weekend.
It usually takes place at the beginning of September but has been moved to coincide with the finish of the Round the World Yatch Race.

It has some very,very good performers in its line up and all of them can be seen for free in different venues around the Marina and in Old Town pubs during the daytime. There are concerts on the Saturday and Sunday nights which cost £5 but usually there is also an unofficial singaround in one of the pubs so it could be a completely free festival (if you don't count the cost of beer).

It is run by the city council and publicity has never been the festival's strong point so you may never have realised that the festival existed (even if you live in Hull).

The guest list on the Council's official festival publicity does not include the,perhaps,most well-known performer who is coming, John Connolly, who wrote Fiddlers Green and many other well known songs (although it does have a picture of him ???) Also missing from the official guest list are the excellent trio, The Young'uns.
There are also photo of Danny Spooner and Bob Webb on the Council's publicity so I think they are also two more of the secret guests.
If you use both links you will get a fuller picture of who is on, and when.

Usually just before the event someone produces a detailed programme of the pubs and dockside venues where the performers can be seen during the daytime. If I get sight of it I will post it here - or if someone else manages to catch a glimpse perhaps they will do it for us.

While I have been composing this message someone else has posted on Mudcat to announce that also in Hull that weekend is the Hull Busking Trail which will have numerous other performers who willbe performing for free around the city Information Here
Oh and there is also a Jazz Festival in the Marina area.
