Subject: Mamas and Papas - revived group
From: Thomas Stern
Date: 15 Jul 10 - 01:12 PM

A new release on the Sarabande label of recordings of the
reconstituted (NOT the original) group (JOHN PHILLIPS Many Mamas, Many Papas) includes notes about the recordings (studio 1981-89, live 1982-83), but does NOT make any reference to other issued recordings.
I purchased a CD, probably late 1980's in the UK of one version of the reconstituted group. Not currently accessibly, I wonder if anyone has the details.
My recollection is that is was issued by a cheapie label, had little or no annotation, pretty awful musically, might have been live.
If anyone has ANY issued recordings of the REVIVED group, I'd appreciate details (label, catalog number, titles, personnel,
date, venue (live/studio), etc.
Thanks, Thomas.

Liner notes speak of July 3rd 1995, which makes more sense, considering the (P) year.

Fair, except that Papa Animal on the drums is mixed in too loud for some reason. This quartet doesn't mix as close as the original, though. This can be be a benefit when you want to study what's going on, but may leave a feeling of melancholia for those who know what the line-up sounded like that Harvey sang along with.

Bye

Mysha,
Thank you for the details of the Platinum/Prism album.
Does anyone have a CD issued in 3004 on RYKODISC 10645, "Live
at the Savoy 1982 - Sold Out"?? Who are the performers?
Thanks, Thomas.

Mama Cass was ELAINE 'SPANKY' McFARLAND at least in some incarnations.(spelling?) Cass had a mellower voice than Spanky--who could be brassy.

She was the lead singer of Spanky And Our Gang in the 60s-70s.

I saw one reconstitution on TV some time back, with MacKenzie Phillips standing in for Cass Elliot. The groove -- the tightness of the harmonies, where it sounds like everybody just knows what everybody else is singing and the harmony is pure magic -- just wasn't there. Sadness.

Spelling was Mcfarlane or McFarlane, I'm not sure if she capitalized the "F". Attended high school at the Academy of Our Lady in Peoria, Illinois with my sisters, I was across the street at the boys' school, Spalding Institute. According to them, she was a great gal, and never interested in anything but music!

She replaced Gusty Hervey in the New Wine Singers, fronted by Malcom Hale, and that group trasmogrified into Spanky and Our Gang.

I have no idea what Elaine is doing today - perhaps another Mudcatter knows.
