Subject: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: olddude Date: 15 Jul 10 - 08:25 PM I been messing around with this ... a variation on this great old song .. I am no classical guitar player .. but do you think this melody variation works? After Greensleeves |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: Melissa Date: 15 Jul 10 - 08:54 PM I think it sounds like it sticks together just fine! |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: olddude Date: 15 Jul 10 - 09:07 PM Thank you Melissa, gotta smooth out the picking a bit, just sat down and did it .. now I think I need to make it less choppy and flow better |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 15 Jul 10 - 09:49 PM That is just great, Dan. I love it. Thanks for posting. |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: olddude Date: 15 Jul 10 - 09:50 PM Leeneia Thank you .. that is my 30 buck yard sale guitar. I really like the mellow sound out of it . |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: olddude Date: 15 Jul 10 - 11:02 PM Just reposted a little cleaner version |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 16 Jul 10 - 02:26 AM I bet Henry VIII would have invited you to Hamptom Court Palace to hear you play, Dan. :0) That's lovely.. |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: GUEST,Jeff Date: 16 Jul 10 - 02:50 AM Fine picking. Very clean. Would've liked to have heard a steady 1-2-3/1-2-3 bass line and the B part go to the relative major(C in the case of Am part A), but I'm just being an overly officious nitpicker. Doing even a simple walking bassline underneath the melody would be very impressive. Well within your technique, too. I've done a walking baseline on 'Glory Of Love' and know it's not easy, but VERY satisfying when it comes together. Get the bassline together first then the melody will fall right into place. All your chordforms will change to accomodate the changes, but I'll guarantee humble satisfaction when you get it right. Have fun with the challange should you decide to give it a go. |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: bseed(charleskratz) Date: 16 Jul 10 - 03:21 AM Beautiful, Dan...a very nice settingfor the classic tune. Charles |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: Will Fly Date: 16 Jul 10 - 04:15 AM Nicely done - you cunning Old...Dude, you! The back story is that Dan recently set a little test for his friends on our "Will's Porch" Forum by asking each of us to do our version of "Greensleeves". Now, when the pupils have done their homework, up pops the headmaster with his own fine version and puts us all to shame! Good stuff, Dan! :-) |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: GUEST,Liz Date: 16 Jul 10 - 06:46 AM It sounds beautiful Dan. I took up the guitar three years ago and am plodding along but maybe one day I can play like that. |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: olddude Date: 16 Jul 10 - 08:52 AM Jeff what a great idea, thank you I will try that. you folks are way too kind ... and Will I will never be able to play like you my friend .. You all made me smile |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: maeve Date: 16 Jul 10 - 09:27 AM You know I like your playing (and singing), Dan. And to have other talented musician friends with whom to try out arrangements...I envy you. Thank you for letting us hear your music. |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: olddude Date: 16 Jul 10 - 10:54 AM Holy Cow Jeff !!! that is hard for these broken old hands but wayyyy cool. Makes the guitar sound like two going on ... I gotta work on that getting the bass down .. it will take me a while since I am just getting the fingers to behave again ... great suggestion wayyy cool !! .. Maeve, you are an amazing song writer. We have to figure out how to get your music on the board for others to hear .. Thank you Dan |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: maeve Date: 16 Jul 10 - 11:17 AM Thanks, Dan. There's very little live music or songwriting here these days. It's fun to imagine you all working out your arrangements. It was one of the things I loved to do, especially on harp and guitar, even at my fairly basic level. Enjoy! |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: olddude Date: 16 Jul 10 - 11:27 AM Did you get your guitar Maeve? I know you were looking at one on the net. |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: Will Fly Date: 16 Jul 10 - 11:27 AM Maeve - here are some offerings from Dan's "pupils" What Child Is This? - Renée Hobson (Renée had posted the Greensleeves tune as "What Child Is This" over last Christmas) And here's just three choruses, off the top of my head, from me: Greensleeves - Will Fly There'll be more to come, I'm sure - sometime before recess... :-) |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: olddude Date: 16 Jul 10 - 11:35 AM And those versions Will mentioned are absolutely wonderful .. God I wish I could play a 10th as well as Will ... one of my guitar heros. Nobody does rag like Will .. he can make the thing sound like 4 guitars |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: olddude Date: 16 Jul 10 - 11:37 AM And he makes it look so darn easy ... I swear he has 20 fingers LOL.. YOU DO WILL !! |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: frogprince Date: 16 Jul 10 - 11:43 AM Once again proving that if you start with a melody that is really "right", you can do almost anything with it without hurting it, so long as you treat it with respect. Glad you posted the new "cut", Dan; didn't want to knock the original, but the pickup of the guitar sound came off sort of as if I had a cracked or loose cone in a 'puter speaker. |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: olddude Date: 16 Jul 10 - 11:45 AM And if anyone wants to join Will and I and the gang please share your version. This started out because my grandson gets a little fussy at night and my daughter said can you do a guitar piece. He loves listening to music .. so I thought why not greensleeves .. then I thought it maybe fun to get everyone to do a version for practice and just to see what we could come up with ... so if anyone has a version of their own, please do share .. I know there are millions of professional versions but none of us are pro's .. we are just folks who love to play for fun .. please do join us |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: olddude Date: 16 Jul 10 - 11:55 AM Dean LOL, it sure did, I don't know what I hit but rusty wasn't the word .. this version needs work .. gotta smooth it more and better bass .. then I will have something for the baby to go to sleep with .. ya can tell I am not classical guitarist ... but when ya have fun nothing else matters. Thank you friend for the listen. You always make any song I write or play better by letting me know what parts are strong and what parts suck and I appreciate that ... when a person plays they usually have something in their head but sometimes the head and the hands don't connect and others have to point stuff out or they cannot ever improve ... Like Jeff's bass comment. Much appreciated |
Subject: RE: Olddude - After Greensleeves From: topical tom Date: 16 Jul 10 - 12:40 PM Very nice sounds, Dan! Thanks so much! |
