Subject: RE: Roger Watson retiring from music career - health From: GUEST,Bob the Shantyman Date: 25 Jul 12 - 12:25 PM I remember seeing Muckram Wakes at Stourbridge when I was still a novice. I sang "Watercress-o" and attributed it to Riger, not knowing that he was sitting there in front of me. True professional, he just smiled and applauded in the right place. The Wakes made a wonderful sound with rogers sonorous voice as it's anchor. Enjoy your retirement. |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson retiring from music career - health From: Hoblander Date: 24 Jul 12 - 07:06 PM Hazel He also wrote The Invalid Miner. He was a great performer, well remember seeing him at Eston Folk Club. Kevin |

Subject: RE: Roger Watson retiring from music career - health From: nutty Date: 24 Jul 12 - 04:32 AM Can someone please provide a list of Roger's Songs. Would I be right in thinking (I get confused these days) that he wrote "Number Two Top Seam"? |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson retiring from music career - health From: GUEST,Tricia K Date: 23 Jul 12 - 09:59 PM I was privileged to be Roger's gf 1965-66...many cherished memories. He was a great person as well as performer way back then. Take care, Roger. |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson retiring from music career - health From: Herga Kitty Date: 18 Jul 10 - 01:56 PM I've just checked and reminded myself that the Young Tradition recorded Watercress-O in 1966, so it probably is a trad song by now.... Kitty |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson retiring from music career - health From: oggie Date: 17 Jul 10 - 05:41 PM Best of health to you. I still remember dancing Dorset 4 Hand down the great white way at Hull Uni way back when. Steve |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson retiring from music career - health From: Bonzo3legs Date: 17 Jul 10 - 04:02 PM Good luck in your retirement Roger. He was involved in the formation of Alianza back in the early 1990s, a collaboration between Show of Hands, Dave Townsend with three exiled Chilean musicians, Sergio Avila, Mauricio Venegas and Vladimir Vega, who were involuntary guests of the hideous pinochet back in the 1970s. |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson retiring from music career - health From: GUEST,Sean O'Shea Date: 17 Jul 10 - 03:44 PM I took part in a feature with him at Chippenham this year and I found him enthralling in his ideas and proposals and charasmatic in his presentation.I am so glad I got the opportunity to tell him so. |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson retiring from music career - health From: Edthefolkie Date: 17 Jul 10 - 02:47 PM Thanks for posting that Vic. Oh dear, not very good news about the music side but I've known Roger for something like 50 years now and on that basis I don't think the man can be totally kept down! If you read this Rog, we WILL meet up again in due course and I will be working on a few other ne'er do wells re some sort of get together. Keep in touch - we will. |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson retiring from music career - health From: Paul Davenport Date: 17 Jul 10 - 01:22 PM 'lets hope you can still contribute to the Folk scene with more self penned songs.' absolutely Dick! Roger, very best wishes, as Mr Spock would say, 'Live longer and prosper'. Thanks for the music and thanks for the song Paul |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson retiring from music career - health From: banjoman Date: 17 Jul 10 - 06:22 AM Sad news - we go back a long way with Roger - to the early Whitchurch Festival to TAPS and beyond. Always helpful and a great performing artist. We were looking forward to seeing him at Broadstairs this year - I take it that is now cancelled? Best wishes and Roger you never did refund the cost of the battery for your old Renault but thats another story. Pete & Maggie |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson retiring from music career - health From: Mr Red Date: 17 Jul 10 - 05:03 AM Roger, will I am sure, continue his knowledgeable and incisive participation on the E-Ceilidh forum (e-mail). As he says, Boka Halat did invoke comment - personally I found the music eminently danceable as long as you are not snobbish about these things. Opinions on the calling style he adopted - er -lets us just say the discussion will run, and run. As I remember he had a heart condition 15 years or more ago so it is rewarding that he could give us those years. |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson retiring from music career - health From: Alan Day Date: 16 Jul 10 - 03:14 PM Roger formed part of probably the best Folk Dance Band ever "The Hop" who were fantastic at Sidmouth. He wrote some great tunes, one of my favourites "Around Britain Jig" co written with the late Nigel Chippendale who was member of The Hop. He was a great caller and superb Melodion and Concertina player. A great asset to the Folk Scene and I hope Roger you can make a come back in the future. Al |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson retiring from music career - health From: Brian Peters Date: 16 Jul 10 - 02:55 PM Roger also contributed at Chippenham with great application and gusto to one of the 'Songshops' that I ran. He really gave it his all. Thanks for that, Roger, and I'll be very sorry if this is a permanent retirement, and that we won't be seeing you making music on the scene again. I thought the band was great, too. Brian |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson From: Herga Kitty Date: 16 Jul 10 - 01:30 PM Very sorry to read this news - but also very thankful that I heard Roger at Chippenham. Not to mention very thankful to have seen Muckram Wakes and the New Victory Band (though I think I missed him as the Fairy Godmother!). All best wishes for a long and happy retirement - and hope you will still be singing and playing for fun, rather than work! Kitty |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson From: RoyH (Burl) Date: 16 Jul 10 - 11:55 AM Roger, Seeing this news makes me even sadder that I had to pull out of Chippenham. I've known you as a friend and colleague for a hundred years, and have always admired your great musical gifts. The whole of the folk sccene will miss you, but, as others have said here, your health comes first. Be sure to take good care of yourself. We'll all be thinking of you. Cheers Mate, ROY. |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson From: Anne Lister Date: 16 Jul 10 - 11:35 AM So sorry it's come to this, Roger, but clearly your health has to come first. I'll hope to see you out and about again at some point, taking it carefully! And we'll miss you. |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson From: GUEST,Gadaffi Date: 16 Jul 10 - 11:28 AM My best wishes to Roger and whatever he does in the future. Muckram Wakes and the New Victory Band were essential listening in my early days in folk. |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson From: Valmai Goodyear Date: 16 Jul 10 - 10:55 AM Very sad news. Let's not give up hope. |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson From: The Sandman Date: 16 Jul 10 - 10:51 AM Sorry to hear this Roger,Roger is of course an excelent song writer too, lets hope you can still contribute to the Folk scene with more self penned songs.Dick Miles |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson From: The Borchester Echo Date: 16 Jul 10 - 10:47 AM Too right. I do wish people wouldn't start threads with just the name of the artist. It's too scarifying. The above statement was put out on eceilidh - just in case any of you were puzzling over I look forward to following opinion about eceilidh through this group. Roger didn't mean here! |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 16 Jul 10 - 10:42 AM So so SO sorry to hear this - my love & best wishes to Roger in whatever turn the road takes next. Bonnie xxx PS TO CLONES: Please can you add the word "retiring" to the thread title after Roger's name? Otherwise it makes one fear the worst. I never clicked on anything so fast in my life -

Subject: RE: Roger Watson From: Leadfingers Date: 16 Jul 10 - 10:40 AM Far better to call it a day , and have a life , rather than Soldier On and risk anythong REALLY nasty happening . Best of Luck Roger and thank you for what you have given us in the past ! |
Subject: RE: Roger Watson From: Alan Day Date: 16 Jul 10 - 10:30 AM Very sad news. |
Subject: Roger Watson From: Vic Smith Date: 16 Jul 10 - 10:12 AM This from Roger:- I am sorry to have to announce that due to ill health (a recent stroke and an ongoing heart condition) I am retiring from my career as a musician and caller with immediate effect. This also means that Boka Halat is winding up. News which, I am sure will disappoint some and delight others. Since we launched ourselves on the eceilidh scene with an LNE in Sidmouth in 2001, opinion has been split over us. But like or loathe us, we have, I hope, made you think about English dance music. If you know why you were either a supporter or a detractor, then you will know more about your attitude to ceilidh. All TAPS projects - and that's how Boka Halat started out - were intended to encourage new thinking about English traditions. If you caught what it is now clear was our last gig, at Chippenham this year, thank you. We thought it was a good one to have gone out on. Thank you also for the positive criticism and encouragement which many of you have given us over the years. I look forward to following opinion about eceilidh through this group. Farewell and best wishes Announcements will in due course be placed at www.bokahalat.co.uk and www.rogerwatson.co.uk He was on excellent form recently at Hove Folk Club and again when we booked him at the Royal Oak in Lewes with Musa M'Boob. We were lucky enough to share both a concert stage and a curry with him at Chippenham this year. We were also lucky enough to have been at the LNE in Sidmouth in 2001 that Roger mentions. This stands out in my memory as one of the best dances that I have been to and the standard at Sidmouth LNEs is very high. All best wishes to Roger. Take it easy and enjoy life. I hope that we will still be meeting up. |
