A British group has released th 1st wax cylinder recording since 1922. THEY ARE SHIFTING DADDY'S BONES TO BUILD A SEWER, one of my favorite working class songs from Britain. I learned it out the Young People's Socialist Songbook some 46 years ago. It's nice to know that all the old technology hasn't gone by the wayside.

I just passed this on to my cousin, Kirk Bauer, who built his first copy of an Edison cylinder recorder/player when he was a student.

He's a collector of Edisonia -- and Thomas Edison invented or improved a lot more than phonographs.

There are machines that play different sized cylinders, too.

The Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project at UC Santa Barbara has made available for listening, over 8000 digitized cylinder recordings. They can be found here http://cylinders.library.ucsb.edu/index.php

Weren't most of Edison's inventions made by his large group of employees?

This comment on another thread made me curious:

Slim Dusty was the first Australian to receive a Gold Record (still the only 78 rpm gold record in existence in this country)

How many do you have to sell to get a golden cylinder?
