Subject: Lyr Req: La Fanciulla del West - Opera From: GUEST,Royal Anne Date: 17 Jul 10 - 12:04 AM Could one of you Opera enthusiasts tell me where I can find the words to "Or Son Sei Mesi" from La Fanciulla del West? Italian with English translation would be great, but I'll take it in either. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: La Fanciulla del West - Opera From: GUEST Date: 17 Jul 10 - 08:57 AM Monique, Thanks for the effort. I spent an hour looking for the lyrics to, Or Son Sei Mesi, before coming to MudCat. Still hoping some genius will find the lyrics. This is very challenging. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: La Fanciulla del West - Opera From: GUEST,Janet Date: 17 Jul 10 - 11:37 PM This isn't about the lyrics, but while there's a thread about this opera, and I don't see any related threads that might be more appropriate, I thought I'd mention that this is one of the operas the Metropolitan Opera will perform during the 2010-11 season. It will also be broadcast in HiDef on selected dates in some movie theaters. I think this will be broadcast in Jan. 8, 2011, and then on a Wednesday night soon after. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: La Fanciulla del West - Opera From: Don Firth Date: 18 Jul 10 - 12:41 AM There are a number of full-length recordings of La Fanciulla del West, plus at least two DVDs of the opera. Full-length recordings of operas usually come with a libretto. Original language in one column, English translation in a parallel column. If you have a fairly well-stocked public library nearby, they may have it in their music department. The only problem is that, all too often, some borrower has either lost or pinched the libretto, Some libraries may even have full opera scores. Or if there is a sizable university with a music department—or for that matter, a music conservatory—nearby, they usually have a music library complete with scores. Along with recordings. Good hunting!! Don Firth |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: La Fanciulla del West - Opera From: GUEST,Royal Anne Date: 19 Jul 10 - 09:02 AM Thanks Don. Our library carries the two DVD's with librettos, but as you say, they've been pinched. I get all my CD's, and DVD's from the library, so have a wealth to choose from. I just put on hold "The book of 101 opera librettos". That should keep me going for a while. I appreciate your good advice. Sorry it took me so long to acknowledge your comments. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: La Fanciulla del West - Opera From: GUEST,Royal Anne Date: 19 Jul 10 - 09:09 AM Janet - Thanks for the heads up on the Met's schedule. Last season I had free tickets to all the broadcast performances at my local theater. Since I don't see my ever getting to New York this was a rare treat for me. I hope I can snag those free tickets again. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: La Fanciulla del West - Opera From: Don Firth Date: 19 Jul 10 - 02:36 PM I tend to think that the main reason the librettos (or, as I have been admonished, "libretti," the plural in Italian) disappear from library copies is that people burn themselves a copy of the opera and just happen to "neglect" to return the libretto to the library, keeping it for their copy. Oughta be a big fine for not returning the package intact. You can buy copies of librettos (er—libretti) from some well-stocked music stores, or they can usually order a copy. I live in Seattle and go to Seattle Opera with some frequency. Seattle Opera is supposed to be the fourth largest opera company in the country, often featuring some top-rate, well-known singers. One can buy copies of libretti from Seattle Opera. Used to be $3.00, but they may be more now. Don Firth |
