By way of Piers Cawley's blog, I've just discovered a Web site called BandCamp. It seems to be a way of uploading and sharing - and selling - audio files, like MySpace or (the late) Sound Lantern, but (a) without MySpace's ten-song limit and (b) free (they take a cut on sales).

Anyone using this or know any more about it?

I don't use it myself, but just note the Terms of Usage (extract):

by Submitting any User Submissions through the Site or the Service, you hereby do and shall grant Company a worldwide, non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, fully paid, sublicensable and transferable license to use, edit, modify, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, perform, and otherwise fully exploit the User Submissions in connection with the Site, the Service and Company's (and its successors and assigns') business, including without limitation for promoting and redistributing part or all of the Site (and derivative works thereof) or the Service in any media formats and through any media channels (including, without limitation, third party websites).

Most of these sites have similar rules, but I thought it was worth highlighting them...

I use it and I like it. It's been great for selling singles that aren't part of a set album and I like the fact that folks can choose the price and the format. My Bandcamp site

For a while the artist has been getting 100% of each sale, but now Bandcamp is going to a share model and they will get 15% of each sale and then at a certain number of downloads (I can't recall the number) the share goes down to 10%.

Debra - your Bandcamp pages look great - better than Soundclick if you're seriously into selling material. I only sell DVDs (from my website), and I give audio files away, but if I didn't have my website, Bandcamp looks very appealing.

Awww, thanks, Will for the kind words.

I never liked Soundclick. I have a number of friends who use Soundclick and I would have to go through a registration process and that turned me off, thus I never listened to their music. I can be quite impatient and if I have to jump through a bunch of hoops to listen to music, I will go elsewhere.

It was a wee bit of time setting up the Bandcamp pages, but now that it's done, I can go in and edit them.

Even with Bandcamp going to a profit share biz model, I think I'll saty with them.

Debra
