I am fairly sure Skip James did it in a D-minor tuning - possibly DADFAD. If you still have a copy of my "Travellers' Tales", that is the tuning I use on "As Far As My Feet Will Carry Me" - although I don't manage to make it sound much like Skip James! The main problem with that tuning is that the only chord which it makes any sense to play is the actual open one. I get round the problem by playing a constant melody over an alternating bass. Skip James was a bit smarter than that and was able to do all sorts of clever things... Damned annoying these folks with talent! |
