The Lost Colony was the site of Sir Walter Raleigh's attempt to establish a permanent English settlement with his Roanoke Colony (NC) in 1585 and 1587. Wikipedia says "The fate of the final group of colonists has never been determined, yielding persistent myths. Stories about the "Lost Colony" have circulated for over 400 years."

Does anyone know any songs referring to this Lost Colony?

Nothing traditional that I'm aware of, and I'm pretty sure that Brown and Chappell have none. On the other hand, Paul Green wrote an outdoor musical drama called "The Lost Colony" that has played there for more than 70 years. I've never seen it, myself, but my niece did and loved it, and I bought her a very inexpensive copy of the book with the history of the play, the script, and the song lyrics (no music as I recall, but that was 10 or 15 years ago. Abebooks.com lists 48 copies, starting at $1.50.). Quite likely 20th cent singer/songwriters have taken up the subject.

"Guest" at 7:31 PM is the old 12-stringer, who never seems to notice whether his cookie has expired before he hits the "submit" button.

Thanks. I'm trying to piece together a program for 4th graders in North Carolina that uses authentic folks songs to help teach the history of NC. But the outdoor musical drama is something I need to explore. There maybe a great song that works perfectly.

From up on the Blue Ridge Parkway, I thank you.
