Bobert's favorite left wing pinko rag does not even mention Fox News's involvement. He watches Maddow, Olberman, Mr Ed and Matthews and repeats whatever they say. It's easier than studying all the facts and making an independent decision.

Also being able to separate facts from propaganda helps.

Remember that old adage that the secretary of agriculture should be seen but not heard? (You know that one, right?

Tom Vilsack broke that rule this week with his dismissal of, doubling down on dismissal of, apology to and attempted rehiring of (it reads like the 12 stages of grief) a midlevel Department of Agriculture employee named Shirley Sherrod.

The story -- in short -- goes like this. On Monday, conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart posted on his Web site a video featuring Sherrod, the department's director of rural development in Georgia, making comments about her reluctance to aid a white farmer because of his race.

Sherrod, who is black, was quickly asked to step aside by Vilsack, who said the episode complicated his attempts to "turn the page on the sordid civil rights record at USDA."

But facts are pesky things. As the story evolved, it became clear that Sherrod's comments were taken badly out of context -- she was using the tale of her initial hesitation to help the farmer decades ago, long before she joined the USDA, to make a broader point about race and class -- and that Vilsack (and just about everyone else in Washington) had condemned Sherrod wrongly.

By midweek, the White House was in full mea culpa mode, with press secretary Robert Gibbs (last week's Worst Week winner) telling reporters that "a disservice was done, an apology was owed." Adding to the surreal nature of the saga: Sherrod was watching Gibbs's news conference live on CNN.

Following Gibbs's lead, Vilsack put himself up for a public flogging, acknowledging that he "could have and should have done a better job" and expressing "profound regret" to Sherrod, to whom he offered a new position with the USDA. (Sherrod has yet to say whether she will accept the gig, despite chatting with President Obama about it on Thursday.)

And, just when Vilsack had humbled himself as much as anyone thought he could, Obama decided to humble him some more. In an interview with ABC, Obama said Vilsack had "jumped the gun" in the Sherrod incident. "We have to take our time and think these issues through," the president admonished. Ouch.

Tom Vilsack, for trying to put out a fire that wasn't even lit, you got burned. And you had the Worst Week in Washington. Congrats, or something.

...but I've sometimes seen political appointees resign from their political position, and retreat to their former civil service job - sometimes without a cut in pay. Since Sherrod resigned without a fight, I was wondering if that was the case for her.

What hasn't been made clear, is whether Shirley Sherrod had a political (exempt) appointment, or if hers was a regular Civil Service appointment. If it was a Civil Service job, it would have been almost impossible to fire or even demote Sherrod for the reasons stated. If it was an exempt appointment, Sherrod would have been serving at the pleasure of the Obama Administration, and could have been fired for any reason or no reason.
I gather that Sherrod had a long history of employment with the Department of Agriculture. I'm guessing that she may have had an exempt appointment to a political position, and would have had rights to retreat to her previous job.

What I don't get is why a secretary of anything would rush to get rid of a federal employee, and did not use extra caution in the case of a long-term minority employee. I don't understand why he didn't say privately we seem to have a problem here and ask for a collection of facts, review the speech himself or by a trusted deputy and if found to be problematic, ask for a review. It does not make sense..and her story of her father is truly tragic...and we need as many minorities in USDA as we can get and as many working in agriculture who really want to be doing that sort of work (as opposed to no other opportunities..and we need to redress some wrongs to African American farmers and probably others that she has pointed out. mg

If they were independent, that would be something, but these are guys reading filtered scripted news from corporate...you know, the same corporate who has their vested interest in what you are told...as much as BP! These are not journalists, investigative reporters or investigative anythings, Many of them are actors whose only gig was reporting...some started out as weathermen. Kieth Olbermann, was a sportscaster, who rose to fame smashing Clinton during the Monica Lewinski debacle. He was filling in for another reporter...and I'll say, he was good at it.
Their job is to keep you engaged in the bullshit....and if it wasn't for bad news, or 'news' they can't whip up controversy about, the sponsors wouldn't be having viewers to peddle their crap remedies, for the neurotic crap their feeding you, and they'd be out of a job!..or replaced by another bottle blond clone.
