Subject: RE: Brighton Folk? From: Phil Edwards Date: 26 Jul 10 - 06:25 PM Well, he said, I'm back (in Manchester) and when I was down south I ended up going... nowhere at all. (Saturday evening, the Radishes collectively ran far too late for me to think about going out - at 8.00 we were still thinking about getting something to eat. Sunday afternoon was out, as consultation with Mrs R established that my absenting myself on five hours in the middle of the day would not be appropriate. Sunday evening looked hopeful, but in the event all there was was a couple of sessions in central Brighton which definitely weren't running, plus one possible in Kemp Town which seemed like a long way to go on spec.) I shall definitely get to Lewes next time. |
Subject: RE: Brighton Folk? From: My guru always said Date: 24 Jul 10 - 04:45 AM Hector on his own is fabulous, and when he gets together with Sue & Steve as Soiree you're in for a rare treat! Get along to see them if you can.... |
Subject: RE: Brighton Folk? From: Valmai Goodyear Date: 24 Jul 10 - 04:40 AM Our guest performer at the Lewes Saturday Folk Club tonight is the excellent Hector Gilchrist, who sings Scottish traditional and traditional-style songs with guitar. He's bringing Sue Graves & Steve Poole, who make up the band Soiree from Twickenham to add some harmonies. Admission is £5 and there's no membership scheme. As always, floor singers & musicians are very welcome; we start off with a few join-in tunes for any instrument. I'm MCing this week, but don't let that put you off. Valmai (Lewes) |

Subject: RE: Brighton Folk? From: Phil Edwards Date: 23 Jul 10 - 06:18 PM Will - that's a very generous offer, & it would be good to meet up again, but I think I'll have to decline; I really need to limit myself to Brighton & immediate surroundings. |
Subject: RE: Brighton Folk? From: Valmai Goodyear Date: 23 Jul 10 - 05:38 AM Hope to see you in Lewes, Pip. I can't get to the Sunday sessions as we've got a band practice. Valmai (Lewes) |
Subject: RE: Brighton Folk? From: Vic Smith Date: 23 Jul 10 - 04:54 AM Session at the Royal Oak in Station Street Lewes 3.30 Sunday afternoon. Easily accessible frm Brighton by bus or train. Just a few minutes away from Brighton and much nicer..... |
Subject: RE: Brighton Folk? From: Will Fly Date: 23 Jul 10 - 03:32 AM Pip - there's an acoustic session at the Bull in Ditchling on Sunday evening. Not just trad, but "rags, reels and airs" as well - tunes and songs. If you've no car but would like to come, I can pick you up and take you back to Hassocks station (main line to Brighton) - or collect you and take you back to Brighton after the session. 20 minutes from Brighton (the way I drive...). :-) PM me if you're interested. |
Subject: RE: Brighton Folk? From: TheSnail Date: 22 Jul 10 - 07:26 PM Judging by the Sussex Folk Guide, no but it's only a fifteen minute train journey and a ten minute walk at the other end to the Lewes Saturday Folk Club where you will get a warm welcome on Saturday night. If you click the "Local free sessions" link, you'll find a couple of events advertised on Sunday. I know the The Royal Oak, Lewes session is happening. Not so sure about The Lord Nelson, Brighton. Check with the organiser. |
Subject: Brighton Folk? From: Phil Edwards Date: 22 Jul 10 - 06:30 PM It's a long shot, but are there any clubs or singarounds in Brighton this coming Saturday or Sunday? Unmiked and traddie-friendly preferred, but I'm not too fussy - I am limited to Brighton (and Hove), though. |
