As many as a million attended this event, and due to a mass panic event (which might have been caused by police trying to prevent some from entering) as many as 18 deaths and 100 injuries occurred.

Reports said a stampede broke out in a tunnel after authorities tried to stop thousands of people from entering the area where the parade is being held.

This really belongs below the line, where I am sure a clone will send it pretty soon.

For the time being, I do not want to offer any opinion on what happened before all the facts emerge. Suffice it to say that it will sadden anyone that young people, who just wanted to party, lost their lives in such an awful way. My heartfelt sympathy to all those affected.

BBC Report here includes some (optional) video, 19 reported dead at the moment.

To an unqualified observer it looks as though the emergency services made a large, and very orderly response, though there is no indication how long after the incident began the footage was shot. Such a sorry thing to happen, I just hope that the casualty count goes no higher.

AFAICT there is danger of this sort of thing whenever a large crowd is trying to get into a confined space. The people in the rear have no way of knowing what they are doing to the people in front.
