I'm away up to Alnwick at the end of September for a few days - you need a break after several holidays in France - and have got a couple of tickets for Fiddlers Bid who, by chance are appearing at the Playhouse on the 30th.

From what I've heard of them on various web sites, they sound pretty good. I got the tickets on spec as I'm going to be up in the area and knew I would feel the need for some fiddle music. Anyone seen them live? If so, any comments?

Forgot to mention - Alnwick to Morpeth: 30 minutes - worth a trip to the bagpipe museum as well...

Saw them live at Fareham and thoroughly enjoyed them.

You'll know all about Barter Books, of course, but it's always worth a mention!

Oh yes! I thought the Carnforth s/h bookshop was great, but Barter is even bigger! :-)

If you're still around Mon 4th Oct, there'll be live pipers in the Chantry 7.30pm onwards.
If you can afford to eat at the Alnwick Garden treehouse restaurant, there's live music there on Sun 3 Oct.

Thanks for the heads-up, Paws. We go up on the 28th September and start back on the 1st October, with an overnight stop at Congleton on 1st. But the Alnwick Garden treehouse restaurant sounds great - must check it out.

Last time we were in Alnwick we stumbled upon a toy shop-cum-taxidermist specialising in Pokemon and resurrected roadkill. Hmmmm. Maybe time before last anyway.

The archivist at the castle is a mate of mine and a great fiddler - look out for Chris Hunwick.

While you are in Morpeth at the Bagpipe Museum, pop into the hardware store right on the main road as you drive in off the A1 - fantastic place!. Reminds me of how a hardware shop used to be in me yoof :-).

That would be the legendary Smailes. It's not quite what it was, but it's still has atmosphere & remains one of Morpeth's unique retail experiences, along with Appleby's Bookshop and (a little farther out) Heighleygate Garden Centre. Be sure to give Appleby's a look though - all sorts of everything and some fine old municipal Green Men carvings on the facade to boot!

Just to report back for those who may be interested, Fiddlers Bid were absolutely superb - packed full of high energy, good humour and excellent musicianship. The Alnwick Playhouse was sold out - and no wonder!

Picked up several good tune books at the Bagpipe Museum in Morpeth, plus - from Barter Books - an LP in excellent condition of Northumbrian piping by Jack Armstrong and Patricia Jennings. Oh yes - and the Teahouse Garden restaurant was great.
