Five weeks to go. Any 'Catters' going?

It looks like Anne and I will be on Campsite duty on Thursday and/or Friday and should be free to enjoy ourselves on Saturday.
On Sunday we are committed to play at the Whitworth Rushcart for Wrigley Head so will have to miss Fylde for that day.

Ron-

I'm still trying to figure out my UK tour schedule in September and I'm trying to avoid too many crisscrossings of your lovely island.

But I'll see you at the Steamer on September 9.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Buggeration - I'm away that weekend (travelling back from Cornwall on the Saturday, to be precise).

But I'd still like to thank Ron for posting this in good time - more than once now I've looked at "Who's Going To Blitherscrum This Year?" threads only to discover that Blitherscrum was in three days' time. Great if you're on the network, not so much use if the Mudcat is your network.

Really looking forward to it this year. Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer will be there, both on their own and with me as "Los Marbles". We'll be playing at the Boston, the North Euston, the Steamer and the Gasworkers' Club. B\est of all, our last concert on Sunday afternoon is at the main venue - Mariners' Hall -, appearing alongside Cloudstreet (and perhaps joining forces too) and the McCalmans... It doesn't get any better than this for me - four friends and three heroes together!

Note Poems, Pints & Potboilers at The Steamer - although at 10.30am on a Saturday morning I doubt I'll be able to face a Pint much less a Poem or a Potboiler, but we'll persevere! That'll be Ron, Rapunzel & myself as your genial hosts, though I dare say we'll let Ron take the helm as only Ron can in these situations.

Nice website!

Haven't heard Cloudstreet since I was revisiting Sydney, Australia. They are very good and full of energy.

I'd also love to see Jez Lowe & the Bad Pennies again, and certainly George Papavgeris & Los Marbles.

I'm not familiar with a whole lot of the other performers.

The ABSOLUTE musts (for me) are, in no particular order;

Vin Garbutt
The McCalmans
Archie Fisher
New Scorpion Band
Jez Lowe & The Big Bad Pennies
The Wilsons
Shep Woolley
Johnny Silvo
Vicky Swann & Jonny Dyer
Bernard Wrigley

The rest of the line up, well, they're 'only' fantastic!

And still a month away. Can't wait. Anticipation.

I s'pose I'll just have to 'make do' with Whitby until then.

G.

Not forgetting DEMDYKE which, er, swings again 3,00pm in The Mount. The offical album won't be with us by then, alas, but last year punters enjoyed a Collectors Edition Live CD-R at a bargain price of £3 and I dare say something similiarly enthralling will be on hand this year, though we may have to up the price to £3.50 on account of unforeseen overheads!

With ref. to the 'Worst Singer in the World' competion, as the winner of the first two events I claim to have some knowledge of its history.
The standard of 'bad singing' has declined over the years, with the late Mary Smith's excruciating 'Rule Britannia' it reached it's zenith. Since then most winners have ranged from 'bad' to 'awfull' in fact some have been just about listernable too! Let's hope for some genuine bowel gripping, enteries this year.

One of the highlights is Sailor Ron Baxter's Heritage Walk, kicking of on the Friday at 3pm from The Mount. Whilst the details of each year's walk are a closely guarded secret, one hopes it will include opportunity for a performance of Lost by the memorial on the prom to all the Fleetwood trawlers lost with loss of life. Ron's masterful lyric manages to mention them all, and Ross's setting makes it a moving tribute that has gone out around the world - most notably perhaps in a stunning version by Fylde favourites Pint and Dale. Our version (Ross, Rapunzel & Myself) can be heard HERE and hopefully on the day...

Any chance of a lyric add, Ross??

Joe's mentioned his singarounds - there's lots of others too! The cream is the Sing Through Six at The Mount on Friday hosted by Camelia, and anyone around on the Thursday night should get themselves along to Sailor Ron's Sing in the Festival at The Steamer. For those of you who don't know, 'Sailor' Ron Baxter is the consummate host & singaround facilitator par excellence - and if we ask him nicely, he might just give us a rendering of Morecambe.

This year's round Fleetwood 'Heritage Walk' will take in the 'Goth's funnel', the Jubilee quay, both lighthouses, & the Euston Park. If it is raining 'cats & dods' [of course it never rains at Fylde] a talk on the history of the town will be given in the Mount Hotel.
Last year we had 62 on the walk, let's see if we can beat it this year. Assemble at the Mount Hotel at 15:00 on Friday, 3rd Sept.

Only one change to the programme. Unfortunatly the Gambian drummer, a late addition to the bill, will not now be able to attend. His funding has been withdrawn & he has had to return home, otherwise everything seems to be ready.
Pre festival events: Sunday 29th 'Alen Bell Band at Marsh Mill Thornton @ 14:30, 30th concert on board 'Jacinta', 1st Fleetwood Folk Club the 'Steamer' 20:30, 2nd Bernard Wrigley @ the North Euston Hotel, and pre festival singaround in the Steamer.

A nice do indeed, although we had to split as Scolds Bridle were taking the stage owing to an early start for Rachel today. The Jacinta is Fleetwood's heritage trawler - the performance space is the massive fish-hold. As well as our wee set we did Lost with Ross (in a version which can be heard HERE) - one of Ron Baxter's finest lyics which accounts for every Fleetwood trawler lost with loss of life. Great atmosphere, great audience & a fine start to what promises to be another great festival.

Next up - Wednesday night at The Steamer with Fleetwood Folk Club...

Most regular Fylde festival goers will have memories of the unforgetable Theresa Tooley who sadly died from Motor Neuron Disease in January this year. A CD has been made entitled 'Theresa Tooley at Whittlebury Song & Ale'. This CD is produce by kind permission of Theresa's family, a compilation from the Whittleburt Song & Ale recordings made by Tom & Barbara Brown between 1991 and 2003. CD mastering and art work by Ken Hall of Sleights Whitby.

Maureen and I will be bringing some of the CDs to Fylde. We will be doing Singarounds in The Mount on Friday night Saturdaay morning, Saturday night and Sunday lunchtime in the New Victoria, other than that we will most likely be found lurking in the bar at the Marine Hall most nights till late.

Included in the CD are some of Therasa's best song like 'Captain Valiant', Teddy Bears Rave-up' and 'Joan the Leather Queen'.Eighteen tracks in all each one a gem. The CD is a steal at £8 and the whole of the proceeds got to The Motor Neuron Association

Great sings indeed, Sooz - tonight at The Steamer will be a good one one too - and don't forget The Survivors Sing tomorrow night.

Excellent weather so far although there was a few drops of rain on my window half an hour ago, even as I sit here doing a cassette (remember those?) of my old Bob Roberts albums for Jim. No finer way to start the day really.

It's been a ball so far, as usual - Demdyke was another roaring success, packing out The Mount & selling out all of the CD-Rs, before Rachel & I raced across town for The Big Sing. Strange to say that I've never heard the Wilsons before - that's a sweet noise for sure! Also yesterday was Poems, Pints & Potboilers at 10.30am in The Steamer - which was more of a coffee morning with various rolls of wrecks & rescues and poaching tales. Thanks to everyone who supported this & hopefully see you all next year!

We've got In the Tradition this morning & some storytelling this afternoon (weather permitting) and the Steamer Sing tonight, where I've a mind to field M'Ginty's Meal an Ale if I've got any voice left at all.

Thoroughly enjoyable once again - even the Red Arrows put in an appearance.

Were the numbers down on last year? I normally judge the attendance by the length of time taken to get served at the various bars, and this year it was quick (not a complaint BTW, merely an observation).

Distinct lack of youth in the audience - at least at the events I attended. Pity.

Numbers must have been down, the final concert had loads of empty seats all the way to the end, I have not been since 2006 but all the ones I went to before that you had to queue for ages to be guaranteed a seat in the final concert. A shame. I think the line up was not as exciting as the line ups used to be. Still had a great time though.

First comment after planning through the programme was that it looked a little thin, because of a general lack of wishing to be in two/three places at once, but decided that this was just individual taste, rather than any lack of top talent. As the partial list above shows (where's George?). We didn't spend half so much time as usual scurrying from venue to venue trying to fit everyone in, but perhaps that meant we actually heard somewhat more music if at fewer venues!

I even sat through the final concert, whereas in some previous years I've given it a miss because lack of interest in guests, heat or excessive noise levels - no complaint this time. I'd agree that it wasn't as packed as usual, which at least kept the temperature down.

I thought it was excellent again this year and enhanced by decent weather for a change!
In particular I saw more of the "Fringe" in the Steamer etc (probably because I was booked to take part)and also enjoyed the late night cabaret on friday/saturday nights. The latter provides a great opportunity to see a sample of many of the Festival guests in one venue who would otherwise be missed.
Anyway, thanks go to Alan and Christine Bell and ALL the dedicated folk who make this a great FOLK festival each year.
Looking forward to next year already!
