I was doing some work down at Robinhood Farm the other day and happened to look up into the old chestnut tree that hangs over the farm house and saw this: Click here for Facebook link

Is the image of Buddha or something else?

There's a second image which provides more perspective.

I'm thinking there may be a lot of money in this, especially with the right partner. I'm willing to share.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Sorry, Charley, it looks more like the severed head of C3PO, the tall android from Star Wars, to me.:-)

From the look of you, not all the white liquor was good, eh?

Thanks for the suggestions. It is an inspiring image. I'm now thinking it might be an image of the Aztec or Mayan sun god: click here for image! What do you think?

My apologies to those who can't view the image because they don't want to sign up for Facebook. I've already had to change my password there because of spam. But it's a lot more convenient than putting up images on my own website.

Definitely not the Buddha, Charley. Besides, if it were, you would be obliged to kill it.

So is flickr, and that doesn't mess around with your privacy.

McGrath et al-

One does now have levels of privacy on Facebook that one can decide upon. Facebook's just a convenience for me and I probably would never have become a member if there hadn't been a massive crash on Mudcat and I wanted to know what was up!

The trouble is, as I understand it, the privacy defaults are liable to get changed from time to time, so you have check that kind of thing, and it's easy not to. So I'm a member, for the same reason Charley is - Mudcat crashes. But a very cautious and non-active member.

I've also had to change my Facebook password after I clicked on a spam link. But that's also a problem with many forums.

Janet-

It's definitely a fungus but it looks like one of those images one finds on the wall at a Mexican restaurant.

I'm now thinking of setting up a webcam and steaming live feeds worldwide. The image changes dramatically with the shifting of sunlight and you should see what happens when there is a storm. Actually, I've just added another image of what happened to a sister chestnut tree last November when it was caught flat-footed by a blast.

There were 28 Buddhas, I guess you refer to Siddhartha, the shakyamuni.

"In countries where Theravada Buddhism is practiced by the majority of people (Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Laos, Burma, Thailand), it is customary for Buddhists to hold elaborate festivals, especially during the fair weather season, to pay homage to 29 Buddhas.

These revered Buddhas include the 28 Buddhas described in Chapter 27 of the Buddhavamsa, plus Maitreya Bodhisattva, the future (and 29th) Buddha. The Buddhavamsa is a text which describes the life of Gautama Buddha and the twenty-seven Buddhas who preceded him. The Buddhavamsa is part of the Khuddaka Nikaya, which in turn is part of the Sutta Pitaka. The Sutta Pitaka is one of three main sections of the Pali Canon of Theravada Buddhism.

The 28 Buddhas are said to have attained enlightenment from the time Gautama Buddha received his first Niyatha Vivarana (permission to be the next enlightened one) from Dīpankara Buddha.

The 28 Buddhas are not the only Buddhas believed to have existed. Indeed, Gautama Buddha preached that innumerable Buddhas have lived in past kalpas."

Note re #29, Maitreya: "Maitreya (Sanskrit), Metteyya (Pāli), or Jampa (Tibetan), is a future Buddha of this world in Buddhist eschatology. In some Buddhist literature, such as the Amitabha Sutra and the Lotus Sutra, he is referred to as Ajita Bodhisattva.

Maitreya is a bodhisattva who in the Buddhist tradition is to appear on Earth, achieve complete enlightenment, and teach the pure dharma. According to scriptures, Maitreya will be a successor of the historic Śākyamuni Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. The prophecy of the arrival of Maitreya references a time when Dharma will be forgotten on Jambudvipa. It is found in the canonical literature of all Buddhist sects (Theravāda, Mahāyāna, Vajrayāna), and is accepted by most Buddhists as a statement about an event that will take place when Dharma will be forgotten on Earth."
