My day started with a phone call from my dear wife in NYC. She was having abdominal pains, and it turned out to be gall stones. She is now resting comfortably in recovery.

Cheer up, Skipper--you've shown all the gall in the family up to now, so she deserves a turn at it...

Gall bladder surgery can take a while for recovery. Good grief! I have family in NYC Captain. I rarely ask favors of them so they will respond.
Damn it, Jacqui, you and Kendall are really hard work!
Get well!
How are the UK family doing?

SINS... "Gall bladder surgery can take a while for recovery."

It is much faster nowadays. Small incision. 30 years ago, when you and I were teenagers, it was rather invasive.

But, hey jac... play it for all it's worth darlin! At least 6 weeks of TLC from the squeeze.

Just spoke with jacqui's daughter. The surgery is over. The offending gall bladder and stones are gone. As soon as she is released by her keepers, the plan is to fly her home to Maine. Lewis was allowed to see her so he knows grannie is ok. No trip to DC, Mudcatters.
Whatever you need, Captain.

Okay. Kendall gets all the attention and poor Jacqui comes down sick. Well, I think the very least he could do is have those stones set into a ring for her! I did that for my wife when SHE had gallstones and she didn't speak to me for a year.

Jacqui, I hope you have some male nurses, CNAs, docs, etc., to flirt with the way Kendall does with the ones of the female persuasion when he goes in hospital.

But, really, you don't need to try to compete with him to rack up hospital visit points.

Do rest up, feel better very soon, and get home!

Oh my! at least it didn't happen in las vegas when she was so far from her Maine man....you both take care, and no more frequent flyer
points for hospital stays, ya hear??!!

a quick trip down google lane yields these quotes:

Gallstones may be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball. ...

There are two types of gallstones: 1) cholesterol stones and 2) pigment stones. ...

Gallstones are hardened deposits of digestive fluid that can form in your gallbladder...

More than 500000 Americans each year have their gallbladders removed because of painful gallstones...

There are 17 main foods to avoid:

    * Beef
    * Butter
    * Cheese
    * Coconut oil
    * Cream
    * Eggs
    * Palm oil
    * Pork
    * Processed foods
    * Sugar
    * Salad dressing
    * Carbonated drinks
    * Spicy foods
    * Onions
    * Corn
    * Beans
    * Nuts

In addition, any item that is deep-fried or overly fatty should be avoided.

Foods to Choose
While there are many things to avoid, don't forget the foods you should eat to help you prevent gallstones. A diet that is high in fiber, low in fat and contains things like fresh fruit, vegetables and plenty of water will help prevent gallstones.

goodluck and get better soon..

Mine are in areas usually well covered. LOL

Yeah, a strick beet diet is the way to go... You can cook the tops, too... And if ya' have a food processer you can make beet shakes, beet slaw, beetburgers and beet icecream or beetcikles.. If not, it's beet caserole, beets and rice, beets on top of yer cereral, beets me and fried beets with onions... Yummy...

An organ recital! I like the idea! I could show the videos from my rotator cuff surgery last July -- and sell copies! Of course, Jacqui's gallstones would be a big hit. And various bits of Spaw, too. This could be the best attended thing at Getaway.

That's a bummer, hope jacqui's soon improved.

Avoid fats, especially saturated fat. Fat makes the GB go crazy. The good news is that controlling and minimising fat intake helps with weight control (I lost 90 lbs!)

Evening all. This is my first good net access since the weekend - the hospital didn't have wifi and that at the hotel was very poor. Thanks for all the nice words - they are appreciated.

I'm back home - quite an easy trip - it's surprising how fast you can get through airports in a wheelchair! Don't remember the flight - I slept most of the way back. I've been fed and watered and am now scoping out the best place to sleep as I can't right now lay down without having a hell of a job getting up again.

I suppose, if this thing had to happen I was in a good place - lovely surgeon who did what was needed and nurses who really looked after me. The kids had fun touring NYC and I did get to go to Ken Schatz's sing on Sunday night, which was excellent. I had no warning signs, just real abdominal pain on Monday that drove me to get medical advice. It could have been a lot more inconvenient if this had happened on the west coast. At least I only had a bit over an hour's plane ride today.

Thanks to SINSULL, who came with Kendall to the airport to pick me up as the kids are bringing the car back home and we thought that I might have some problems getting in and out of the truck.

I am disappointed at not making it down to Washington - I was so looking forward to getting together with people down there, but, another time, hopefully.

Now I'm going to go sit for a while with my Sweetie - he's also glad I'm home.

The car ride home was interesting. Kendall and Mary do go at each other somewhat! My problem was to keep from laughing when they were doing it because it HURT to laugh!

Anyway, had a good night's sleep, can move around a lot easier now and She Who Must Be Obeyed (AKA my daughter/mother) will probably be back here tonight to boss me around. Kendall's gone off to look at the antique cars in the auction he's going to tomorrow and I'm just resting up and doing nothing.

Got to go see my doctor at noon - his office said he had no appointments and scheduled me with another doctor yesterday, but Fraser sent a message saying HE wanted to see me, so that's good.

Now I'm going to sit with my crochet and watch TV for the rest of the morning....

Doctor's very happy, and a bit surprised at how well I'm doing. spent most of the day resting up and then had a visit from Becca, which really made the day. Sharon, Steve and Lewis got here about 9.00pm, after a visit to Sturbridge Village and I'm allowed out tomorrow night to Trubrit's for the song circle, so long as I rest up during the day.

Everyone enjoyed the auction, but the prices went above what Kendall wanted to pay, so he's still got the fun of looking for a new toy.

The kids loved Sturbridge Village, although they were surprised at how big it was and could have spent longer there if they had had the time. I've not been yet - sounds like something to put on my go to list.

we went to Trubrit's last night for super and singing. Lewis was very impressed with Dan's guitar playing and wishes that he could play like that. We've told him - practice, practice, practice. Dan wrote a new song on Friday, sang it last night - a beautiful piece of work.

I'm getting a bit better everyday - still tired, but that will pass.

When I last observed them at TRUBRIT's abode, they were sedimentary with alluvial deposits of fond friends eddied 'round. Kendall cast a few flinty glances when noise grew too loud. Jacqui took it for granite that she could sit easy while others tumbled about on her behalf.
Together they presented a set as polished as river stones. I know they were tired; in fact they must both have had a visit from the Sandman for they rolled along home quite early.

OK - update.

I haven't been feeling good for a couple of days, very tired, lightheaded and depressed, and got to see the doctor this morning. I spent most of the day having lab tests, which came up clean and the, this afternoon, a CT scan (a new experience for me). Finally got the results from the doctor who told me that me digestive system was 'not normal'.

It seems that I have 'sludge' in my bile duct - tiny little stones that have migrated from the gall bladder - and that has been playing merry hell with me for a couple of days. I have to have a day case procedure to open up the bile duct a little, to allow all this stuff to drain away. My doctor was going to send me to the ER tonight to get an ultrasound done but, since they don't do these procedures at the weekend, he decided that I could have it done Monday, otherwise there was a risk that they would keep me in hospital over the weekend. Since it's my birthday on Sunday that is a definite no no, since the symptoms are not severe enough to really cause problems.

I'm home and on clear liquids until they sort this out - Sharon says she'll find floating candles to put in my broth on Sunday. She Who Must Be Obeyed has also vetoed me going to yard sales with them tomorrow, or going out in the old car on Sunday. (When DID she become my mother?)

As Kendall and SINSULL said - vodka is a clear liquid, but maybe I'll let that one go. I do know that I do feel better for not having eaten any solid food today, so sticking to the diet may not be too difficult. Hopefully they can get this sorted out early next week and then I can get on with recovering properly.

I just bought a 1937 Packard and the Mrs. won't be able to ride in it on Sunday. Lousy bile duct.

If you want to see what the car looks like, go to google, type in 1937 Packard cars. A bunch of photos will come up, ours looks like the maroon one.

Right now the boring diet is quite welcome - solid food seems to compound the problem and I feel a lot better living on broth and juice. I've been threatened with Jello shots for my birthday tomorrow, but maybe I'll give that a miss.

Sharon's been bossing me around and not letting me do anything that isn't absolutely essential. Lewis went for a sleepover with Mary last night, got totally spoiled and was delivered back here this morning for all except Kendall and me to go to the yard sales and have breakfast out. I've been promised yard sales next weekend if I behave myself.

I had a visit from Kendall's two younger daughters with birthday gifts. a nice wine box included (wine is a clear liquid, isn't it?) and spoke to my son in the UK for a while. Other than that it's reading and watching TV and, to be honest, I'm not kicking against that right now.

Update.

The ultrasound today showed no sign of anything in the bile duct and all my internal parts seem to be normal. (That's more than the rest of me is!) I've still got some discomfort and will be having more blood tests and seeing a gastro-enterologist tomorrow.

I have been given permission to eat normally for now and am taking it a bit easy to see if there are any untoward effects to having solid food. Hopefully, the liquid regime may have flushed the sludge and things will get better. I HATE being invalided - I just want to get back on me feet again.

Lawrence, KS, December 12, 2008

A Kansas farm wife called the local phone company to report her telephone failed to ring when her friends called - and that on the few occasions, when it did ring, her dog always moaned right before the phone rang.

The telephone repairman proceeded to the scene, curious to see this psychic dog or senile lady. He climbed a telephone pole, hooked in his test set, and dialed the subscriber's house.

The phone didn't ring right away, but then the dog moaned and the telephone began to ring.

Climbing down from the pole, the telephone repairman found:

1. The dog was tied to the telephone system's ground wire with a steel chain and collar.

2. The wire connection to the ground rod was loose.

3. The dog was receiving 90 volts of signaling current when the number was called.

4. After a couple of jolts, the dog would start moaning and then urinate.

5. The wet ground would complete the circuit, thus causing the phone to ring.

This demonstrates that some problems CAN be fixed by pissing and moaning.

OK - I've seen the gastro-enterologist who is not happy that,with solid food, the symptoms are coming back. He says that these stones in the bile duct don't always show up on ultrasound and that it seems that there is a blockage that needs to be dealt with. Sometimes the CT scan is more reliable and he knows and trusts the doctor who looked after me on Friday.

I go in tomorrow morning to have a little nick cut into the bile duct to allow whatever is there to drain. That will be done under general anesthetic and I will probably have an overnight stay in the hospital.

I'll be glad to get it done - this is getting old now.

Looking on the bright side (as one does), now we have a new litany of disorders for the "Doctor" to cure in the mummers play. In fact, with all the illness in our community this year, perhaps our Doctor could make a few extra bucks for the pot by selling little bottles of his "sovereign remedy." Hmmmm....

Surgery done. Mostly scar tissue from passing stones over a period of time. That has been removed and the opening enlarged. With luck that should be it, although there is a small chance that they may need to work on the pancreatic opening if I get any more problems.

I'm in a private room - so no room mate from hell, as happened in New York - and the promise of pain meds if I need them. Just had a visit from Kendall and Sharon, who set up the laptop for me.

I've got me laptop, a book and TV, so I'm all set for the evening.

Back home again, feeling a lot better. The surgeon tells me that it is possible that the other opening into the bile duct, from the pancreas, may need to be dealt with, but I'm hoping that they've sorted things out OK now.

I'm on a liquid diet for today (had green Jello in the hospital this morning!) and then gradually working back to a normal diet.

We've got Bob Zentz and Jeanne coming to stay tomorrow night so today is the day to rest and recuperate before the weekend festivities.

Day 2 out from the hospital (which was, incidentally first class, with a private room and little interruption from nurses, so I managed to sleep very well.)

I have more energy than I've had in a long time, back on solid foods with no problems. It looks as if the problem has been solved and I wonder how long this has been affecting me, with a gradual lessening of energy levels.

Today I changed sheets, cleaned the bathroom, emptied the dishwasher, sorted out the pots and pans, chauffered Sharon to and from her pampering session at the local beauty shop, shopped and cooked dinner for seven people and still don't feel tired now.

Life is VERY good......
