A variation on the 'power plug' theme:

Two members of my family were looking at the kettle - they tried switching it on and off, but the light still didn't come on and the kettle didn't make its welcome heating-up noise.

I went over and lifted the kettle off the worktop and placed it on its powered base. Bingo - lights, music - problem solved!

The most common cause of 'tech service calls' to washing machines, fridges, etc is said to be 'power plug not plugged in' ... :-)

Ah ha! It just occurred to me that the problem appeared after I had run Firefox in Safe Mode while I was investigating.

Went back and clicked in a couple of things that had been disabled and here I am!

Someday I will learn these things.

I have - and use - Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware, Spybot, Avast and AVG. I've run each of them manually since I started with this problem. All clear.

"Task Manager"- I'll do that next.

Ebbie, what virus protector do you use? If it is one of the ones you pay for (like Norton or McAffee) it will have a specific protocol for removing "Spyware Guard 2009", which is what that BankerFox program seems to be.

Bankerfox - that is the clue to your problems. There is no such thing its a fake report by some malware running on your computer, which is probably also responsible for the random changes to firefox.

malwarebytes from http://malwarebytes.org will most likely fix the problem but you may need to get rid of the proxy setting the malware has installed in IE and Firefox.

You will need advice of exactly how to run malwarebytes so that the malware doesn't disable it.

If you have used any sensitive sites such as banking since you first noticed problems you need to log on to them from another computer ASAP and change your password, passwords typed on your computer may have been collected.

Sorry to bring you bad news.

Advice to everyone is, if you get virus/malware warnings in a format your don't recognise from a program you didn't install then it isn't genuine; especially if it offers to fix the problem if you pay for some software.

Just a thought...open Task Manager (right-click on bottom bar of screen). Open Processes and see if firefox.exe is there. If so, right-click on it and click End Process. Close Task Manager. Wait for a 20-count, then try to open Firefox.

Nope. I did a System Restore first. No change.

I have also deleted the program and re-installed it. Twice. No change.

The icon lights up when I click on it but does not stir.

If this were an automobile, when I turn the starter it doesn't grind or whine or click- it is as if I hadn't turned the key.

Non-accessible? You mean the icon is there, but it won't start? Or it opens, but won't do anything?

There are SO many setting that 'could' have been accidentally changed.
A 'system restore' to a point a week ago might well fix it.

You could reinstall Firefox. Or if you've got Windows XP etc, why no do a system restore to when Firefox was last working OK. Only takes a couple of minutes.

Hat in hand, here I am again.

The other day I had one of those BankerFox messages. No problem - I went through the procedure I had gone through a few months ago.

However. Mozilla Firefoz is non-accessible. I had to go to IE - whichis where I am now. But I want Firefox back.

Why does it not respond? I suspect some kind of clicking is needed, but I don't know where.
