Hi folks.

I have started this thread as an off-shoot from Max's grand UK tour thread so we Mudcatters going to Whitby Folk Week, or even resident in Whitby, can start to focus on Max's initial tour of the UK and collectively agree and schedule one, two or even three MudGatherings for Max during his stay in Whitby between Sat 21 Aug and Wed 25 Aug.

Regrettably, due to even more family commitments, it is looking like I won't get to Whitby till Tues or Wed that week so I am appealing to my folkie buddies like Les from Hull and Raggytash and Ray Padgett and dosy rosy and Muppett and Ossonflags and Harteypool Harry and Tig and Mr and Mrs Duck et al to step into the breach and help me to arrange a really good do for our special VIP, Max.

I agree with Les from Hull that a MudGather in 'The Board Inn' on Mon or Wed in the afternoon would be great after Whitby Scratch Morris have finished dancing. What time would that be Les? It's a good quiet venue where we could all meet and greet Max and get to know him and he could do his own thing.

Other good suggestions are of course 'The Endeavour' sessions at night (8-11pm) if you can include Max as as a special guest, the session in the 'Friendship Rowing Club' and the boat trip to Staithes on Tuesday and also the singing room in The Station Tavern run by Ray and Jim McDonald etc.

So what do you think?

There is also The Black Horse, The Fleece and Middle Earth as possible venues for Max. The list is pretty endless!

So all suggestions welcome.

Let me know your ideas and I know it will all come together to make this a very special and memorable visit for Max so that he will come back to see us all again in the Uk on a regular basis.

Hi Chris.
We Ducks can run into problems due to having kids to organise at different times during the day. We haven't seen a programme yet, so do not know what they are likely to be doing and when.
We will, of course be out with Whitby Scratch Morris, and "organising" them is about as much as I can manage these days.
Scratch routine tends to be Meet in the back yard of the Plough (no song or music allowed) ready to dance out at 1.00pm. We then usually dance in the street at the front of the pub - in front of the church on the other side of the street. After that, we usually head in the direction of the East Side Market, although there isn't much space to dance there since one of the cafes was allowed to put tables across the space we used to dance in. We usually dance in The Shambles (pub), (around 2pm) although on last count singing wasn't allowed, only the music accompanying the dancing. Another outside dance spot is followed by heading to The Board around three, for a pint and a sing.
With the Scratch, if a suitable place is free, there can be other dance spots, but other than meeting up, times and places can vary.
I may give someone a mobile phone number to track us down.

I'll be around all week, with offspring (both mudcatters, although not very active) and offspring's offspring for at least some of the time. Bear in mind that the swing bridge is stuck open, possibly for couple of months I hear, and it's either boat across or bus round at the moment!

We are bringing Max up to Whitby and will arrive sometime around 2pm. We will head straight for the festival office and cafe to pick up our tickets etc, so it would be lovely if some of you could be at the cafe to say hello to Max. Please don't make the gather between 1 and 3 pm, since Dick and I love the ballad sessions scheduled then (assuming the schedule never changes).

The 4pm time Saturday is when we are allowed into the "cottage", so I set that as the meeting time for our cottage. We should get to town by 12 or 1, since we are only coming from Bill Sables. Our cottage is Jack Campin and lady, Dick and I, and Max.

Dick and I will be wearing mudcat shirts most of the week.

Spare Parts Concertina Band (that's Bryan TheSnail Creer, Suzanne Higgins and me) are running a tunes session in the Stakesby Arms on Wednesday afternoon; I can't remember the precise time as Bryan's got my copy of the programme. We'd be delighted to see Max and any Mudcatters who feel like taking part in the session.

The three of us will be wearing coats made of Harveys bar towels at least some of the time during the week. We're running concertina part-playing workshops in the mornings in the Conservative Club bar (separate thread).

Oh dear, let's just keep hopeing that the swing bridge is fully functional at Whitby Folk week!

I've had a thought. Without getting too much 'commerecialized' I just wondered if any bright spark had thought about celebrating this so far one-off event by producing a special T-shirt or badge (come on Tig and Badgeman!) to mark Max's visit to the UK?

It would be great to get a T-shirt/badge about "Max's Grand UK Escapade 2010" and even greater if you could get a limited Whitby Folk Week edition printed with a picture of Max on the front of the T-shirt if Max is willing.

Just an idea. What do you think?

I would buy one for certain.

Can I also ask someone to put up a picture of Max on this thread so that we can all recognise him on his travels. If that is OK with Max.

A suggestion about T-shirts: get a picture done and then invite people to print it on a transfer and iron it onto a T-shirt of their choice. It's cheaper than getting them printed.

Sorry I can't volunteer for this as I haven't a clue about Photoshop or any other graphic programme.

I've also PM'd Les from Hull Hil but had no reply so far. He might be on his jollies (holidays)and have no contact with internet.

So can someone else firm up details for MudGathers with Max during Whitby Folk Week so we can get the ball rolling and get times and dates in his diary please.

I Know that some folk, like Dick and Susan, need to know before they set off on their travels on 12th of August because of potential problems with computer access after that date. So we need to start to firm up details a.s.a.p.

The boat trip on the Esk Belle to Staithes on Tuesday will be great for one and I would also suggest a gather in the Board Inn on Wednesday after the Whitby Scratch Side have finished dancing at about 3.30pm and I would also suggest a welcome and a spot or three for Max to do his thing in The Endeavour pub on Monday night between 8-11pm in the session run by Les and Maggie.

So what do you think? I'm only offering suggestions here but hope that we can finally start to firm up some kind of shedule for Max during his stay in Whitby so that people will know when and where they can meet Max.

Over to you folks, but can we get this sorted petty soon.

Wednesday about 4pm in the Board sounds good, as part of the après Morris.

Of course Maggie and I will welcome Mudcatters in the Endeavour any evening Monday to Friday, but we can't make it in way exclusive, as our job will be to keep the singing and playing going (and the talking to a minimum). But it's a decent sized pub and there's plenty of room to chat as well. And it's a great opportunity to show what Mudcatters can do musically. I'd love for Max to come in and do some blues stuff. I'll have my selection of tin sandwiches available, as well as my Blues Bouzouki.

Despite our building up this event we've been taken off the session but don't know why, apparently the organisers want the sessions to return to their previous format. Susan (aka the Mrs..) and I will be down at Whitby for the first time, forsaking the delights of sunny Scotland for only our 3rd English festival. So will be looking out for any Mudcatters who happen to be around. Looking forward to it, and maybe even to seeing the aforementioned Max, assuming he isn't just a figment of our fevered imaginations. As newbies (similar to but different to newfies..), who love singing and singers, where would be a good starting point.

I've been quietly standing by, watching my guru always said and others work their tails off with all these details, its hard to feel worthy of all this attention. But you know what? If Max wants the full afternoon with Scratch Morris, we meet between 12noon and 1pm in the yard of the Plough (no singing or dancing by order of Humphrey Smith). Or catch up halfway somewhere around the Shambles or East Side Market. Ask anybody where these places are. Most everybody is friendly.

Very glad to hear you are fired up and excited about your tour Max.
I am certain you're gonna have a great time in Whitby.

Even though you are a pretty young (compared to me at 55!) and a fit bloke this will indeed be a "whirlwind" tour for you and at times you might feel that your feet hardly touch the ground.
So you will need to pace yourself and build in the occasional 'siesta/nap' in the afternoon/teatime to recharge your batteries.

You have some incredibly good organisers and true stalwart supporters behind you to make this a real dream come true.
'My guru always said' has to be your true hero and has pulled every thread together to sew the full fabric of your Uk tour.
'Susan of DT' and 'Barb'ry' are also obviously key component parts to make it all work like a well oiled machine.
Very well done you folks!

Now to the nitty gritty of your Mudgather itinery during Whitby Folk Week Max. It is looking like we have finally arrived at a concensus for:

1. Mon 23 Aug : Come along to Les from Hull's and Maggie's session in The Endeavour - 8-11pm and introduce yourself to them ( they should be obvious as the session leaders) and Les will introduce you and invite you to do some blues stuff.
It's a fairly big pub with enough space to leave the playaround/singaround and chat to fellow Mudcatters/fringe enthusiasts at will.

2. Tues 24 Aug : Trip on the Esk Belle to Staithes in the very safe hands of 'raggytash'. Should be a good number of Mudcatters on board. You will love the trip and be made very welcome indeed.

3. Wed 25 Aug : According to 'Noreen' and 'Susan of DT' Max you might like to join the Whitby Scratch morris side at about 12pm'ish in the back yard of The Plough and play with the band (or even dance with them!) around Whitby, finishing around 4.00pm at The Board Inn for an 'official' MudGather there.
That's where you will meet me because I can't now get up to Whitby till then because of other family commitments.

I firmly propose the above itinery Max and My guru always said and suggest that we stick with it so that people can plan their diary around it as time is getting short. Hope that is OK with everyone else!

But don't worry Max, other Mudcatters and fair good folkies in Whitby will undoubtedly suggest other 'happenings' during your stay and lead you by the hand to all kinds of new 'adventures' to tickle your fancy.

So by a process of osmosis you will absorbed into the Whitby community.

Don't forget to pace yourself and take the odd nap!

Having got my paws on the programme again, I realise I'd got confused - Spare Parts are running a music session on Monday, not Wednesday, in the Stakesby Arms, from 5.00 - 7.00 pm (event 214). On Wednesday afternoon we're in event 416, Sussex concert in in the Metropole ballroom, 3.30 - 5.30.

To get stuff into the Wailer you have to turn it in at the Office as early as possible. If it is wanted in an 'ongoing' way make sure the DAY and DATES are on it to make life easier!

I think Max would love taking the bus trip to a half a day session at Robin Hood's Bay and a trip on the steam train and definately the Esk Belle trip to Staithes but it all depends on his wants and desires and how much he can cram into quite the short space of time he is in Whitby.

I would think that many Mudcatters would be interested in buying such a T shirt as a lasting momento of Max's UK tour and the fact that they had met him so they can wear it proudly and say "I was there and I met Max!".
So if I was you Hil I would go ahead and do 'lots' of T shirts because I would be astonished if you couldn't sell them and didn't make a good earner for the Mudcat funds.
My main worry would be that you did not have enough and that people would feel let down.
So I would suggest an initial order of 100 with a rider that the supplier can do more by request and deliver to you during your touring travels with Max around the UK. I think you will sell far more than you think you can sell.

This thread is all about Max who is spending the bulk of his stay in the UK at The Whitby Folk Week Festival on his Grand UK Escapade this Summer.

The title of this thread should give you a clue!

It is Max's very first visit to the UK. And as Chief Exec and founder of MUDCAT I would have thought that as a Mudcatter yourself you would have some respect for the guy and would give him some space and might even want to meet him.
He is also a very fine musician (and singer).

The Mudgather in The Board Inn on the Wednesday is arranged from 4.00pm and might only go on till 6.00pm or 7.00pm at the latest so it will hardly invade your 'evening' for musicians "who usually inhabit The Board"!

Unless some of us decide that your posting here has really annoyed us and decide to 'inhabit' The Board Inn for the whole evening and make it an all night session just to REALLY annoy you!

We will see.

As Soldier Boy says, our invasion of the Board for a MudGather to meet Max will probably only last for a few hours. I'm sure many of the Singers will want to decamp to go to Les & Maggie's session in the Endeavour later and musicians will probably stay for the session. Of course, turning up at a pub is not a guarantee that there will be any space. The Scratch have often found people eating meals in the corner we head to. Sometimes they finish and move on. Other times they enjoy the crack and stay there, maybe joining in. Thankfully nobody has taken offence yet.
Extra mudcatters in the pub might make it difficult for ALL to fit in a limited space, so we could end up spread into more than one part of the pub, but that can offer the opportunity to chat, which does not present itself when there is wall to wall song or music.
It is never the intention to spoil someone else's fun, but an open pub is a "posession is 9 tenths" situation, and we could just as easily be the later arrival. I don't see a problem jigsawing into someone else's session should there be one already going, as long as people are sensible and don't try to crowd out and take over.
Personally I see a Mudgather as an opportunity to meet and have a chat, and time away from any singing can be more valuable than that spent listening to a performance.

When I got to my first Getaway in 2005 , there was a concern voiced that the Mudcatters would be a major clique and would not mix with the 'Ordinary' Society Members . In fact , it was JUST a couple of hundred 'Folkies' having a damn good time playing Good Music , and I am sure the same will happen at Whitby ! Max is an easy going guy , and as already stated a fine musician and singer , though his inclination is VERY Blues Orientated , he thouroghly enjoyed the eide variety of Folk , even when a hoard of us were at his Band Gig on the Monday after Getaway . Lighten up , and Enjoy Whitby , and be Thankful that I wont be there to lower the tone !

Guest, selby (who is not me) makes a valid point. You and your friends do not represent WFW but the locals would not necessarily know this and there is a certain element locally that would use that uncertainty to cause problems for the hard working volunteers who enable the festival.

The Board has been used as a post dance sing snd play by Scratch for a number of years now and has also been a former venue for a Mudcat gathering. Fringe events are as much a part of any festival as official ones as they add to the over sll atmosphere. Mudcatters are not an outside group invading Whitby they are the people who are always there but who also sign in here and would like to meet up with friends. The fringe is the public face of the festival and the fact that the landlord of the Board welcomes us back year after year is enough for me.

Good to see that you're getting into the swing of things here on the MudCat! I'm sure that when you meet Dick Greenhaus of Camsco Music and the Digital Tradition, and Susan too, you'll click that they have been coming over to Whitby from the USA bi-annnually for the past 10 years. They're huge fans of the Festival and they always take back a good review to our musical friends in the USA and that's one of the reasons Max (Founder and Owner of the MudCat) will be coming to Whitby.

As for me, well this is my first Whitby Week although we did manage a New Year a few years back and Richard always used to go and is well known. Luckily I'm booked at Moira Furnace Folk Festival again this year which means that we will be half-way to Whitby and can come along to join the fun. We very rarely get the chance to drag the caravan 'oop North all the want from sunny Surrey (price of diesel you know), so it was an ideal opportunity for us. Our visit to Whitby has worked well with Max's very hectic itinerary during his UK Escapade and we'll be taking him down South to meet with more UK Catters.

Richard and I are regular festival-goers (we scarcely have any time at home) and we count many Festival Organisers as our good friends (Banbury, Bedworth, Folkstation, Bude, Moira etc.) and we are all very well aware of the value of the Fringe to any festival, as I'm certain you are. The MudGathers that I've organised over the past 5 years have generally been programmed into the Festivals by the Organisers and this has worked well for all concerned, bringing additional ticket sales and goodwill.

The majority of MudCatters are regular festival-goers too, usually ticket-holders, and are generally well aware of the need to respect the 'locals' and the venues. As far as I can tell, the only 'uncertainty' about MudCatters is the fact that you can't always tell who they are from their MudCat names. Just like 'geocaching' there are probably serveral of us within a mile of you at the moment. Dozens if you live in Hull *grin*

The first official Mudgather, 8-11pm on the Monday of Whitby in The Endeavour at Les and Maggies session and the second official Mudgather in The Board Inn at 4pm on the Wednesday of this festival are well clear of the Regatta weekend, so no clash.

We are all well known to the landlord of The Endeavour and The Board and very welcome to spend our hard earned cash over the bar.

"The fringe" element of Whitby Folk Week brings a lot of revenue to the town and the true folkie 'fringers' never cause any bother and in over 15 years of coming to this festival I have never heard of any aggro or upsets with the locals or the organisers or stewards.

I believe that 'The Fringe' element of this festival is very welcome indeed by both the organisers and the local population and gives a real buzz to the pubs and clubs throughout Whitby.

In 2000 I went along to a programmed workshop run by Graham Moore, about using the internet as a resource for finding songs and music. Graham mentioned the Digital Tradition, based in the US, and then discovered that his audience included Dick Greenhaus who had been instrumental in setting up and maintaining the DT, which had also linked up with the Mudcat Cafe site. Graham just handed the rest of the workshop over to Dick, to explain how it worked....

The next year at Whitby, I was introduced to UK Mudcatters and the whole Mudcat network thanks to Tyke and the Ducks' Mudcat BBQ. I'm very grateful to have met many Mudcatters since!

I fully agree Herga Kitty, 'Mudcat', as a site dedicated to Folk music and all it's off-shoots and variations on a theme, has a very special meaning to many of us here.

I also discovered Mudcat through talking to the likes of Mr and Mrs Duck and Tyke etc probably about 8 or 9 years ago at Whitby Folk Week.

I am so glad I discovered this site because over the years it has meant a great deal to me both intellectually and emotionally.

As a bloke I wouldn't dare to get too emotional, but I can express that 'Mudcat' has allowed me to meet and get to know so many Mudcatter friends ( my 'extended family'!) and allowed us to keep in touch even during the darkest times of winter.

It has meant that I can look at what is coming up and plan ahead so that I know I can meet up with my old buddies.
I can consider new venues by recommendations and meet new and lasting friends thet keep on growing my very special 'extended family' year on year.

I can source new songs and monologues and start to contribute more in sessions. When before I would not have had the courage and just mumbled along and joined in the odd well known chorus song that I half knew. So my confidence has grown to take part and even to personally create a few songs from scratch.

I can engage in often intellectual and stimulating debate on many Mudcat threads and sometimes get roused to anger or tears.
I can do all of this and post in a split second to anyone on this fair planet.

I find it hard to imagine a time when I couldn't do all of the above and not feel connected to a wonderful Folk fraternity.

So yes, as people have said above, Max (as founder and owner of 'Mudcat') is just an ordinary regular guy from the USA and is not the King of Spain or some kind of demi-god.

But to me he is a hero for creating Mudcat in the first place so that so many of us Mudcatters can do so much that I have only touched upon above and have derived so much benefit and extended our horizons because of his creation.

Let's support him and thank him and do all we can to ensure that Mudcat will prosper and keep rolling along to keep us all entertained and enlightened for years and decades to come.

OK, a stock of Escapade T-shirts have now been delivered to me *hurrah* (They're really quite tasteful - see photo here!) I have enough to cover those already reserved with some to spare in all sizes (small - XXL) except Medium. I could order a few more if needs be.

PM me with size required if you'd like one & let me know where on Max's tour you'll be for handover.

Any spares will be passed to Bill Sables (for his stall in the craft fair) but will only be available to sell on Tuesday & Wednesday as we won't arrive in Whitby till Monday evening & we leave first thing on Thursday. Any spare after that will be taken to Ash, Towersey etc, etc....

Selby's observation is very important.
The first weekend is also the Whitby Regatta. The dates for the Festival are fairly settled , but the Regatta needs to plan according to the tide tables so it could be a little crowded.
No one has mentioned the choo-choo, and singaround . Raggy tash and Ossonflags new thread required I think.

What's been arranged? I'm pretty sure that Max might be even more interested on going on the steam train if there is also an arranged singaround (and a chance to play a spare guitar) included on the journey.

As for another new thread about Max or Whitby Folk Week; me thinks that might seem rather over the top at this late stage.

So if Raggytash or Ossonflags don't respond to your call why not let us know this is happening on the steam train during Whitby so we can plan accordingly and join you for a grand day out!

Hils link to the Flicker photos of our Capers at Old Keepers are brilliant though.

So to recap folks, before you all head off on your travels to Whitby Folk Week.

The 'official' and now set-in-stone "Mudgatherings" to meet Max (Founder and owner of Mudcat),have a chat and hear Max sing and play in Floorspots (and get a chance to buy an historic 'Max's Grand UK Escapade 2010' T shirt(perhaps signed by Max!) as a bonus) are:

*** Mon 23 Aug, 8-11pm at Les and Maggie's session in 'The Endeavour' pub (East/Abbey side).

*** Wed 25 Aug, 4pm in 'The Board Inn' (East/Abbey side near the 199 steps up to the Abbey and close to 'The Duke of York' pub) after the Whitby sratch morris side have finished their day of dancing (which apparently Max may join!) and who meet up 12-1pm in the back yard of 'The Plough' pub (West side).

In between it looks like Max will be on the Esk Belle boat trip to Staithes on Tuesday(see seperate thread) and possibly a half day at the (Robin Hoods) Bay afternoon session and a trip out on the steam train etc etc. It's all to be decided by Max, so you could bump into Max almost anywhere in between the two 'official' Mudbatherings mentioned above!

If you want to be able to recognise Max on his travels (as Bill Sables) suggested just click on "Quick Links" in the top right hand corner of the Mudcat home page and then click on 'Get your Mudcat T Shirt' to see Max modelling the original Mudcat T shirt. He has aged only a bit since, but not that much, so you will recognise him.

I terms of the best opportunity to get to meet Max and have a chance to get to know him and chat to him in a less crowded and noisy enviroment and for Max to feel more relaxed to entertain us all, I would personnaly recommend The Board Inn at 4.00pm on the Wednesday (25 Aug)as perhaps the best venue.

we had a great day with max yeterday. He joined the Scratch for madness and mayhem in the Shambles while the rain poured outside. We then had a brilliant singaround in the Endeavour with Les and Maggie and plenty of 'catters. Max is now my bosom buddy :)

There were many more mudcatters at Whitby Folk Week than came to the gathers, probably because they had commitments elsewhere. Even one of the Endeavour landlords posts on Mudcat, but he won't tell me what name he uses.

Presumably Max also met 'catters on the boat trip (raggytash and Gnomad at least). But those were the signing sheets for the two gathers.

Tig will confirm that I arrived promptly at the given time - I arrived at 3.50 pm and exchanged niceties ,but before I entered the Board she advised me that although this was the correct time to be arriving , unfortunately this was Thursday, and not the appointed day Wednesday.
I seem to be writing the following phrase far too often - right place wrong time !!!!. Maybe it's a Senior thing - I've always been a punctual person. Sounds like a good time had by all .

Yes, you can add my name to those at the festival, I've been lucky enough to live in the town for the last few years.

Met MGAS when she was tearing up Runswick Bay RB raffle tickets and battling nausea with Wombat. As I was working during roughly half the duration of the festival I just got to attend a few of the maritime sessions at the Endeavour, the boat trip, and a bit of fringe singing.

Those who went on the boat trip will have met me (if only briefly) as I was the guy taking the fares, among other things. I did manage a quick chat with Max, just a chance to say thanks for this place.
