Well, I've seen The New Scorpion Band perform no.26 Heaven's a Bar on a couple of occasions. I believe it was written by the excellent concertina-player Tim Laycock himself. As for the rest, dunno without a bit of research.....

1. Windy Harbour - my friend Pete Abbott, now the front man of 'Other Roads', formerly John Wright's Band.

28. Alice's song - two more friends, Cathryn Craig and Brian Willoughby. Written about Brian's niece. Cathryn wrote the words after being moved to tears upon hearing Brian 'doodling' with the tune.

36. Rare Thing - Steve Tilston, who is visiting Lymm Folk Club in a few weeks' time.

I also knew:

26. Tim Laycock, Heaven's a Bar
34. Stan Rogers, Lock Keeper

I know a "Willow Tree," which is traditional,
There was a youth, a cruel youth,
Who lived down by the sea.
Six little maidens he drownded there
By a lonely willow tree. . . .
but none of the others ring a bell with me.

Crowhuggers right with no35.
So far the answers are right for
1. Pete Abbott (Other Roads)
26.Tim Laycock (New Scorpion Band)
28.Cathryn Craig & Brian Willoughby
34. Stan Rogers
36. Steve Tilston

Sorry the Journey's End (no 6 )I am thinking of is jointly writen by to englishmen. I think I am going to have to give clues.
These two Englishmen belonged to an early 1790's group & 0ne member still writes & sings his own material as well as having a radio show on Sudays.

As I said, "The Willow Tree" that I know is traditional. It's an American version of "The Outlandish Knight" or "Isabel and the Elf Knight" (Child #4). Author(s) unknown.

Undoubtedly not the same song as on the list.

Willow tree, as on 'Morris On', collected from Headington

Oh once they said my cheeks were red,
but now they're scarlet pale,
since I like a silly girl believed his flattering tale,
he said he'd never decieve me,
and I like a silly believed he,
And the moon and sters so brightly shine,
Under the Willow Tree

Thank you to those above for your answers. As said the version of Willow Tree is from a Writer in Bedfordshire. no 5 After Midnight is also a newcommers writen song (A French Lady from Cambridgeshire).
No 23. Oh Atlanta is indeed Bill Payne(Little Feat) & No 7 Dougie Maclean.
Yes most are British artists but No.8 is Australian (you will probably say blues not folk) no.17 is the English half of an Australian/English Duo. no.21 an American living in Buenos Aires.
no.24 American as is no.40 & no.29 is the writer from a Canadian band.
When I picked the song titles I tried to pick songs that were on popular albums but not their number one hit or album title. If you would like I will list the Album titles then see if you can get the writer?

The only two of those I could name with any certainty were No 35 being Leonard Cohen and No 5 being by JJ Cale (though mostly known for the Clapton version).

I thought 36 *might* have been Steve Tilston, but was only about 50-50 sure.

I knew the Strawbs did a version of No 28, but was pretty sure they didn't write it.

The rest are a blank!

Here are the album titles I got the songs from;
2.Ten Leagues Beyond the Wild Worlds End
3.Kiss the big stone
4.Album One
5.351 McKendry
6.Third Light

Number 12 may have been sung by John Tams and others, but it's a Shaker Hymn with one or two words changed and the time signature straightened out. The hymn is much more interesting than the "straight" version!
