One of the very best singer/songwriters. I have all his albums except 'Live in Europe'. His first album, 'Too Long in the Wasteland', remains my favourite. He is a first-rate wordsmith and musician.

Yeah, "Too Long in the Wasteland" is super... BTW, James lived in Waterford, Va. for a period of time and actually came back there, oh, around '98 or '99 and did a concert in the old one room school house that I was fortunate enough to attend...

I think he's in the Austin, Texas area these days...

At our Friday night jams, one in the group sings James McMurtry songs - one or two of them. I'll have to check it out.

Sorry, Bobert. I haven't had the pleasure of hearing his music yet. I'm years behind in terms of buying music and accessing sources like YouTube. Seems as if we might have had something in some of the albums we lost, but there's no knowing.

It took awhile to get all the lyrics locked in my brain, but "Lights of Cheyene"has been on my setlist for the past couple of years.
Helluva songwriter.

Great protest song about the economic situation: We Can't Make It Here on YouTube.

I was just going to say that "We Can't Make It Here" was my favorite James McMurtry song, especially the acoustic version.

He's great, both as a songwriter and a performer. Very much in the same style as Steve Earle, I'd say, and just as good. He's got the same knack Earle has of writing lyrics that manage not only to rhyme and scan perfectly, but also to sound like natural speech.

I've got all McMurty's CDs, and I've been lucky enough to see him live twice now, once in London and once in Pittsburgh. It was hearing We Can't Make it Here Anymore on Andy Kershaw that first got me into him and, for my money, his other absolute standout songs are Choctaw Bingo, Out Here in the Middle and Memorial Day.

60 Acres is my favourite. There are a few live recordings out there, including an excellent one in Holland last year with Ian McClagan on keyboards.

You got me all excited there, Bonzo3legs, but that link just seems to download a string of written code. Is it my computer that's at fault, or is there some other way I can get hold of what I assume is a live concert recording?

Well, I'm felling better now that folks are not only listenin' to but appreciatin' JM... Yeah, I tried to post this mornin' (didn't take) what Paul said above about JM being in the same league as Steve Earle... I mean, if I started a thread entitled "Any Steve Earle Fans Out There" it would have rung up a hunnert posts by now...

Just good that some folks are JM fans/appreciaters and hopefully this thread will turn some folks who haven't heard of him into the same...

B~

Yeah, Bob, I like all them Texan bastard sons of Townes, like McMurtry, Steve Earle, Robert Earl Keen, Guy Clark.
James McMurtry gets a little cynical for me sometimes, but I like him. See the Elephant is one of my favorites, and says about as much about why young men go to war as anyone ever has.
