GO RAIBH MILE A MAITH AGAIBH!!
If that's correct! Thanks to everyone who posted all of the information concerning the song Einini!! I have been humming it to my 4yr old daughter for er... 4 years. I remember learning the song in school and have promised her that I would try to find the correct words. And now I have... thanks so so much!

The translation into English is this (well, how I learned it anyway):
Little birds, little birds,
Go to sleep, go to sleep,
Little birds, little birds,
Go to sleep, go to sleep,

Chorus
Go to sleep, go to sleep,
Beside the wall outside, beside the wall outside,
Go to sleep, go to sleep,
Beside the wall outside, beside the wall outside

Blackbird and raven,
Go to sleep, go to sleep,
*Blackbird and crow,
Go to sleep, go to sleep,

Chorus

Robin and lark,
Go to sleep, go to sleep,
Wren and thrush,
Go to sleep go to sleep

*The word cheir-seach actually means female blackbird, which is why it isn't the same as lon-dubh (blackbird). It is still translated into English as blackbird, though.

Oh--the phonetic way...

I don't have that, but that's basically how the syllables sound.

I love einini! :D

Curfa (chorus)
Kad-uh-lee-gee, kad-uh-lee-gee
Cush-on-clee-um-wee, cush-on-clee-um-wee,
Kad-uh-lee-gee, kad-uh-lee-gee
Cush-on-clee-um-wee, cush-on-clee-um-wee,

Anyone know the phonetic way to pronounce the lyrics? I think the song is beautiful and I've listened a few times on YouTube but would like to follow along better.

For anyone curious, the English translation to Aine's curfa are:

Little one, little one, sleep, sleep,
Little one, little one, sleep, sleep.
Sleep, sleep, beside my bosom, beside my bosom,
Sleep, sleep, peacefully serene, peacefully serene.

This is quite likely useless in the extreme, but oh well.

Dear nanniethegreat,

You can find this song (or at least a bit of it) on the soundtrack to the movie "The Secret of Roan Inish", which is still available at amazon.com. If you go to their site (www.amazon.com) and search the popular music section for the word 'inish', you'll find it with no problem.

thanks so much.... to Liam Devlin... please write to me Liam...if you ever read this! Anyone???? I was so pleased when I found these lyrics...my Nana used to sing them to me some very long yrs ago (she died when I was five)... I try to sing a little from memory to my little darling grandaughter..Shaelyn who just loves the lullabye...(even tho I'm sure its a poor imitation of my Nana )lol . I could get no further than the lyrics which I totally appreciated but I am looking for the music so I can put my voice to the song for her to keep...should I not be her to sing her to sleep?? Any idea on this? Anyone? Maureen

Philippa -- Thanks for the rest of the words. Sadly, my grandmother only knew the curfa.

My daughter wants to learn the lyrics to the Irish lullaby, Einini (William Coulter does a wonderful instrumental version on Narada's Celtic Legacy CD). Does anyone happen to have them written down somewhere? English and/or Gaelic lyrics would be ok. Thank you!!!
